this is the first poem I've written since sixth grade, when I wrote
this mildly depressing masterpiece.
our assignment was to imagine our family (immediate, extended, distant, or chosen) and imagine a family photo that doesn't exist but should, one that would tell a thousand truths about who the members of our family really are. further guidelines included to avoid cliché and end rhyme, to focus on the music of the poem and where each line starts and stops, and to use techniques such as assonance and consonance. (alliteration was also discussed heavily in class.)
this poem is entirely based on true events. this conversation actually happened. we didn't actually naruto-run in the hotel (that happened just outside), but the alliteration makes it sound better so *(censored)* it. we did actually discuss our varying levels of gayness while
walking down the hallway.
without further ado,
"Triplets"“Not twins. Triplets,”
I repeat as we Naruto-run
down the halls of the hotel
where I am staying.
“You are dating a boy.”
I point to my friend Fynn,
the boy with red-dyed hair
and black spectacles.
“And you want to date a boy,”
Fynn replies. I grin and nod
as my long, blonde hair
flops on my forehead.
“And I used to date a boy,”
says a third friend, Oliver. The sight
of his freckled face can sometimes
make me cry.
“I love you,”
I remind them every night. A
simple Snapchat streak, turned
into the best of friends.
