Final voting results:

Option A -- 2
Option B -- 5
Option C -- 2

so, Option B won, and there's a new poll now so you can vote on how I should choose the players

PLEASE DO NOT VOTE SUB-OPTION 4

it's only there to reset the votes from the last poll :)

Capistrano Park — Baseball Field — Home Dugout

Fifteen players were on the team that would represent the Oceanside Little League. Each of the twelve teams in the league had one representative on the team, with the first-place Nukes receiving two extra spots and the second-place Sunflowers getting one extra player on the team. The roster was as follows:

Oliver Hawthorne, CF, Nukes
Conner Holland, LF, Nukes
Timmy Turner, RHP/2B, Nukes
Drew Nichols, C, Sunflowers
Trevor Braun, INF, Sunflowers
Michael Torres, C, Lions
Landon Boyd, SS, Penguins
Dante Williams, OF, Rhinos
Mark Mercury, RHP, Wombats
George Ennis, 1B/3B, Blazers
Danny Evert, LHP/OF, Wolves
Andrew Williamson, C/3B, Zebras
Harry Hall, OF/2B, Hawks
Johnny Shaw, RHP/1B, Stags
Mickey Clawson, 2B/3B, Terriers

The Sunflowers’ and Nukes’ coaches were given the responsibility of coaching the team, and they came up with this lineup:

1: Landon Boyd, SS
2: Oliver Hawthorne, CF
3: Mark Mercury, P
4: Dante Williams, RF
5: Timmy Turner, 2B
6: Michael Torres, C
7: George Ennis, 1B
8: Mickey Clawson, 3B
9: Harry Hall, LF
——————————
Conner Holland, LF
Drew Nichols, C
Trevor Braun, INF
Danny Evert, LHP/OF
Andrew Williamson, C/3B
Johnny Shaw, RHP/1B

And the Santa Monica lineup:

1: Joey Murphy, CF
2: Dane Wilson, 1B
3: Logan Peters, P
4: Austin King, 3B
5: Jack Birch, LF
6: Mikey Quinn, SS
7: Marshall Slater, RF
8: Terry Hollins, C
9: Stephen Spiller, 2B
——————————
Harry Evans, C/OF
Wilbur Shields, 1B
Foster Gray, RHP
Adam Rogers, LHP
Thomas Poole, INF
Davey Scott, RHP/OF

——————————————————————————————

The players warmed up for both teams, starting with a light jog out to center field and back. Harry Hall, the son of Major League outfielder Max Hall, jogged out to center, then sprinted the whole way back, leaving everyone else in his dust. “Wait a minute,” Timmy Turner said as they lined up to stretch, “you look really familiar. Do I know you from somewhere?”

Harry stared back at Timmy. After a few seconds, he perked up. “Yeah!” he yelled excitedly. “You’re in my class at school!” After they stretched, everyone went back to the dugout to look at the lineup, and Timmy and Harry walked back together, talking about how each of their teams’ seasons had gone. “My team won the championship,” Timmy boasted. Harry hung his head. “My team…didn’t even win one game this season,” he said.

Timmy decided to distract him. “Hey, look. We’re both starting!” he said excitedly, raising his hand for a high-five. The distraction worked, as Harry perked up again and gave Timmy a high-five.

Next, the Oceanside All-Stars took the field to get warmed up, as the game was about to start. Santa Monica captain and leadoff hitter Joey Murphy watched intently as right-hander Mark Mercury threw his allotted eight warm-up pitches, then stepped into the box, digging in with his left foot and taking a couple weak “swings”. Mark stared in for the sign, nodded, wound up, and threw a fastball that Joey clubbed deep into center field. Oliver caught up to the ball, but not before it bounced off the fence. He grabbed the ball and flung it in to the cutoff man, Timmy Turner, but Joey stopped at second with a leadoff double. But Mark struck out the next three batters, and the Santa Monica pitcher, Logan Peters, walked Landon to start the game. Oliver stepped into the box and watched as Coach Miller gave Landon the steal sign.

Oliver: what do you do?

A. Swing defensively, no matter what
B. Take, no matter what
C. Lean in to the pitch, no matter what
D. DRAG BUNT!?!?!?!?!?! OUT OF NOWHERE?!?!??!?!?!?!!!!1!?!?!?/1!?!!?!

Bottom of the 1st

The right-handed Logan Peters threw Oliver three straight fastballs on the outside edge. Oliver tried to lean across the plate and into all three, and failed miserably each time, resulting in a strikeout. Mark Mercury lined out to third, but Dante Williams kept the inning alive, taking a curveball the other way and knocking a base hit into right field. With runners on first and second, Timmy Turner came up to bat against Peters, who had been mixing his cut fastball and curve very well, but had only thrown his worst (and most hittable) pitch, a changeup, once. Timmy, being a left-handed batter, thought he would see a changeup at least once in the at-bat, but Peters’ first four pitches were all cutters, two inside the strike zone and two outside of it, bringing the count to 2-2.

What do you look for on the next pitch?

A. Another cutter
B. A changeup
C. A curveball
D. Your mom in the stands

Hey, look, there's now a poll where you can voice your opinion!

For a little background: I did the player selection the most random way possible, using the "random integer" function on my calculator. There was no bias or weight involved in the process, and while I might have picked them differently had I done the selection myself, I am overall pleased with the way things turned out.

I do understand that some of you are disappointed that your player didn't make the team, and I get that...

...and I'm going to try to get everyone more involved from now on, I've got a little graph thing where I'm keeping track of how many decisions everyone's made and those of you who haven't gotten as many chances will definitely get more opportunities so I can balance that out a little, don't worry

[Timmy failed to respond again and has been suspended indefinitely from RPG-related proceedings]

Bottom of the 1st

Timmy stared into the stands, looking for his mom. She wasn’t there. Peters underhanded the ball in for a called strike three, and when Timmy turned around, he racked first the catcher, then the umpire, and ran out of the stadium crying. The next inning, Mickey Clawson slid over to second and Andrew Williamson entered at third base. In the top of the third, #9 hitter Stephen Spiller dumped a single into right field, advanced to second on a sacrifice, stole third, and scored on a single by Logan Peters, who then allowed a one-out triple to Landon Boyd. Oliver Hawthorne came up huge in the clutch, tattooing a hanging curve for a home run. Mark Mercury followed with a base hit, Dante Williams doubled to score him, and Andrew Williamson reached on an error to bring up Michael Torres, who swatted a home run of his own to make the score 6-1 Oceanside. Finally, the Santa Monica coach came out to talk to Peters, and got another pitcher warming up, but Peters settled down and pulled the string on both Ennis and Clawson to end the inning.

The next inning saw Harry, Landon, and Oliver hit back-to-back-to-back singles to lead off the inning, and one batter later, Dante Williams went deep, hitting a grand salami to make the score 10-1, but they couldn’t score any more runs that inning. The next inning, Coach Miller and Coach Rommel decided to clear the bench, putting in Johnny Shaw at first, Trevor at shortstop, Drew at catcher, Conner in left, and Danny Evert in center, and moving Harry from left to right. The Santa Monica coach followed suit, letting Spiller bat again but pinch-hitting for the next few batters. Wilbur Shields hit a solo homer to left, but that was all that Santa Monica could manage, and it was on to the bottom of the fifth, with a new pitcher on the mound: right-hander Davey Scott. Scott had struck out looking in his at-bat, and threw only a fastball, albeit one he could cut, run, and sink with ease.

Trevor Braun led off the inning, running the count full and then fouling off a few more pitches. Scott wound up and released another fastball, one that looked to be running in on him.

What do you do, Trevor?

A. Panic and leap out of the way
B. Man up and take the HBP
C. Woman up and take the HBP
D. Hit both the hottest whip of 2020 and a home run, simultaneously

doesn't matter, he picked B :/

what an awful decision, might have cost them the game

[or not]

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Bottom of the 5th

Trevor decided to man up, turning to meet the ball with his back. He jogged down to first, where he watched as Mickey and Harry struck out. Conner Holland came up next, and he met a fastball not with his back, but with his bat, sending the ball soaring through the air and into the Oceanside bullpen, where it bounced up and onto the grassy area behind the right-field fence, right into the lap of his nine-year-old brother Cody.

He was swarmed at home plate by the entire team, save for Timmy, who was officially kicked off the team the next day. His replacement would be picked from a field of seven competitors:

Andrew White, OF
Harley Aston, LHP
Jackleton Scheffley, 1B
Pablo Sanchez, INF
Coen Sydence, LHP
Matty Cooper, OF
Ford Smalley, 3B

The seven boys were instructed to show up to Capistrano Park at 2:30 the following afternoon to try out. Coach Rommel also informed them that it was okay to just not show up, but showing up late would also disqualify them from the competition.

Andrew, Harley, Jackleton, and Pablo: Do you show up? If so, when?

A. Show up right on time
B. Show up an hour early
C. Show up a little early
D. Don’t go at all, just casually turn down a chance to play in the LLWS like it’s nothing

Capistrano Park — Baseball Field

The Aston family car rolled into the parking lot at 1:27. Shaun, now a hormone-infected sixteen-year-old, sat shotgun and was tapping away at his cell phone; Oliver and Jessica flanked Harley in the back. Not seeing anyone else there yet, Harley decided to wait in the car, and pulled out his phone to play on while he waited.

Finally, at two o’clock, coaches Miller and Rommel showed up. Harley climbed over Oliver, jumped out of the car, grabbed his baseball bag, and followed them down to the field. Ford Smalley showed up not a minute later, and the two boys lobbed a ball back and forth while they waited for their teammates to show up. Andrew White and Jackleton Scheffley showed up around 2:15, and when 2:30 rolled around, Coen, Matty, and Pablo were nowhere to be found. Just as Coach Miller was gathering the kids together to tell them to stretch and warm up, Matty came sprinting down the hill from the parking lot. “I’m sorry!” he gasped. “My dad’s car…huff…broke…huff…down—“ the boy took a long breath “—on the way here, and we had to walk the last quarter mile.” Mr. Cooper took the cigarette out of his mouth long enough to confirm his son’s story. “Please, please, please let me try out,” Matty begged, and the coaches finally decided to give him a chance.

Pablo was the next to show up, casually strolling in at 2:45. Coach Rommel immediately told him to turn around and go back home. “Yo cago en la leche de tu puta madre,” Pablo muttered under his breath. “What was that?” the coach asked. “Tu hermano no tiene la ingle!” Pablo yelled, running away as soon as he finished the last word.

“Whatever. On with the tryouts, then.” Coach Miller directed Harley to the mound, and went and squatted behind the plate to catch his pitches. Jackleton stood at first base, pretending to hold a runner on. Harley followed a sequence for thirty pitches — five fastballs, pickoff move, five offspeed, pickoff move — and then pitched to the four other kids, each of them getting two at-bats against him, each of them getting one clean hit and making one out.

Next, Coach Rommel peppered grounders to Jackleton and Ford, with Andrew and Matty playing a makeshift middle infield. After that, he hit fly balls to the outfielders and had them practice cut-off throws to the infield. They capped off the tryouts with four rounds of batting practice, with left-handed Coach Miller and right-handed Coach Rommel throwing two rounds each. The coaches then consulted for ten minutes before making their final decision. They lined the five kids up and eliminated them, one by one, until only two were left:

Andrew White and Matty Cooper.

Both of them made the team.

“Be here by nine o’clock on Saturday; our first game is at eleven, then we’ll play at either three-thirty or five depending on whether we win or lose,” Coach Rommel told the two of them. “As for the rest of you, don’t let this get you down. You’re all great kids with bright futures, and you’re pretty dang good ballplayers too. You are dismissed. Have a great week!”

[your homework is to find out what pablo said to the coach. google translate is wrong]

“Here’s the lineup.”

*pitter-patter*

OCEANSIDE ALL-STARS

1: Landon Boyd, SS
2: Oliver Hawthorne, CF
3: Mark Mercury, 3B
4: Dante Williams, RF
5: Conner Holland, LF
6: Michael Torres, C
7: Danny Evert, P
8: Trevor Braun, 1B
9: Harry Hall, 2B
——————————
George Ennis, 1B/3B
Mickey Clawson, 2B/3B
Matty Cooper, OF
Andrew White, OF
Drew Nichols, C
Andrew Williamson, C/3B
Johnny Shaw, RHP/1B

While Danny and Michael went to the bullpen to warm up, the others relaxed in the dugout, sharing sunflower seeds and gum—and a few laughs—with each other as they continued to bond together as a team. Once the lineup cards had been exchanged, Coach Rommel came back to the dugout and presented the opposing lineup:

EAST LOS ANGELES ALL-STARS

1: Caden Halsey, SS
2: Brad Townsend, C
3: John Jones, 2B
4: Gary Griff, 1B
5: Michael Mecha, P
6: Colby Kendall, LF
7: Gregory Foster, RF
8: Parker Smith, CF
9: Christian Williams, 3B
——————————
Levon Morris, OF
Brett Blackman, RHP
Andy Albers, LHP
Jack Iditarod, C
Who McDonald, 1B
What McDonald, 2B
Jason Cruller, UTIL

Michael Mecha was the best pitcher in the East LA Little League, with excellent control and command for his age. He typically didn’t last more than about three innings, though, as his pitching style put a lot of stress on his arm as it was. He only went three in this one, but made the most of those 33 pitches, retiring all but one batter—Trevor Braun, who walked, then stole second and advanced to third on a sacrifice, but didn’t score—of the ten he faced. In the fourth inning, however, Andy Albers entered to pitch, and his first-pitch fastball ran in and drilled Oliver’s forearm. Oliver had to come out, and Matty subbed in for him, but Mark Mercury struck out. Then something amazing happened.

“The 1-1 from Albers, here in the district championship game. Williams connects, and there’s no doubt about this one. It’s gone! A home run!” was the call from the radio broadcast booth. And then, another one. “Full count to Holland…the lefty winds up and fires in a breaking ball……the curveball hung, and Holland punished him for his mistake, sending that one soaring over the wall in center.” And then Michael Torres came up. “First pitch to the catcher Torres…he blasts this one into left, and……it sneaks over the wall! A home run!” Danny Evert lined a single into right field on the next pitch, and Brett Blackman came in to replace Albers.

Trevor Braun watched Blackman’s warm-up pitches from the on-deck circle, making sure to note that he seemed to only throw a fastball—albeit, a pretty hard one—and a diving changeup. After three fastballs took the count to 1-2, Trevor was looking for a changeup, and just managed to foul off the surprise fastball, keeping the count at 1-2.

What do you look for on the next pitch, Trevor?

A. Yet another fastball
B. Changeup again
C. A curveball? I guess he could throw one, maybe. It’s possible.
D. Revenge upon the man who killed your pet goldfish (please pick this option)
