My wife is an awesome candidate - she's an immigrant at age 14, latina, so she has the minority/latina vote. She has worked hard her whole life, most of it with the same company. She's Catholic. Everyone loves her. She's a little bit of a cream puff when it comes to emotions and debating things, but otherwise she's good.

I would've run for FL state representative, but I am athiest, a college dropout, with no connections, no silver spoon, no minority credibility, some people kind me off-putting because I use big words and aspire to be intellectual (death sentence in Florida), and I am extremely liberal/progressive. So…me running anywhere in the South is kind of a dead end.

My wife, tho…we could make that work.

While we're on the topic of religion:

So I was standing in a rather large line at my local Wal-Mart today behind a couple families that I know from when I went to church with my family in year younger. It was the only register open so there wasn't much of another option to get my 12 pack of Mountain Dew for a party I was heading to. I was wondering why the line was going nowhere when I decided to poke my head up front to see what the holdup was. It was a little old lady who didn't have enough for her groceries and she was trying to talk the cashier into letting her get away with being short. This struck me as odd until I found out she was a mere $0.21 short of her purchase. Now all these families were just staring and there was even two making fun of her. I walked up and handed my soda to the cashier, handed him a $5 and told her to keep the change. One of the middle aged women (I knew these people, so I also knew that they all make over 6 digits) grabbed her kid and yelled very loudly, "See that man? He's acting just like Jesus wants us to." For some reason this set me off, so I turned around. I haven't shaved in awhile so I'm rocking some nice scruff, a Slayer shirt, and gym shorts, so it must have been a nice sight. Very loudly, I said "Like Jesus? Ma'am I'm an atheist who makes minimum wage and I was the one who stepped up to help her? Your hypocritical Christianity is an inspiration to us all." As I stormed out, a couple of the cart boys started to whistle and cheer, soon shoppers joined in and even the cashier. I gave a wave and went off with a feeling of accomplishment.

Yeeeeaaaaahhhh, let's get this back on track, K? (Considering deleting posts starting with kfpc's post)

Sorry to try to get ahead of myself there, GT. Hopefully you do well in the election.

But this is awesome. Don't delete this. Also thumbs up to the 12 pack of Mountain Dew for the party. :)

It's kinda sad that whenever people have a discussion about something serious like religion just now, people come in and want the thread locked or the convo shut down or whatever. Even though no one was actually arguing or saying anything hurtful.

I get that we should get back on track in this particular topic, but it's kind of a recurring thing that I've noticed. In short, I think we're all big boys and we can handle discussions like these.

yeah i agree - when I posted a presidential straw poll, you should see the people that peed their pants just at its existence.

I'm on quite a few forums, not sure why this one is so trepidatious about anything like that. Its good to avoid conflict, but when it starts to prevent you from discussing large topics or learning anything from other perspectives, that's a pretty bad sign.

The forum is very cautious about things like these because of bad history obviously. We have a large diversity of members age-wise, and some just can't handle these mature arguments. Of course, I was the same way and I'd like to think I'm a little more mature now, but imo, it's quite obvious why we try to get rid of these types of arguments.

I think we've grown a little uncomfortable with the topic of religion ever since this: viewtopic.php?f=36&t=7439&hilit=if+you+were+president

Lol our bad history isn't half as bad as most arguments that are just commonplace on other forums.

I just don't get why everyone's knee-jerk reaction is to shut down any serious conversation before it even gets heated.

 that's a good thread.

I was gonna say, looking at that thread (when members were 3 years younger) it wasn't even that bad. The worst thing (aside from bad opinions, which are bad) was someone saying 'please leave'. And then a lot of analysis and apologies and hugging.

This seems like a nice group, that wants to be nice and keep all the members happy. That is excellent and should be praised.

I just value the experience of seeing another person's viewpoint. I am extreeemely liberal, but hearing how a Louisiana upbringing influenced my brother-in-law's opinions was fascinating. At the very least it helps me get where they are coming from - the person's opinion may be terrible, but odds are that they either came to it from experience, or had it pushed on them. It helps me double-check my own thoughts and biases, which is never a bad thing.
