Before game two of the double header, Alonzo approached John Bradley in the dugout.
"Sawamura isn't feeling so hot, John. I'd like you to be our starting pitcher for the second game today."
"That's great, skip."
"I do think you're good enough John, but you need something to accentuate your fastball, a second pitch to keep the hitters off balance. I know a few different pitches, which would you like to learn today?"
A. Sinking Fastball
B. Changeup
C. Curveball
D. Other

OK. Little story. The word Carquinez is from Spain, named after the strait Karkin. A name of the Native Americans in California I made the uniforms in that way definently not like Pirates, but like Native Americans I guess so.

You made the uniforms to look like native Americans? Did I get that right?

...John Bradley couldn't quite get the feel for a secondary pitch on such short notice, and it turned out that Sawamura was feeling fine, he was just meditating. So Sawamura started the game on the mound.

Swigger Derby got the Pirates on the board with a two run triple in the sixth.
The chances for the Carquinez club looked bleak when the Bar Association took a two run lead into the top of the ninth. But with two outs, Jack Caselli hit the first of four straight doubles to spark a three run rally, and the Pirates won by a score of 5-4.

while having a 3 for 5 day at the plate.

Today was a travel day for the Pirates.
They headed north from Tampa, stopping in Gainesville.
The boys were hungry, so Alonzo took them to his favorite spot in town, the Soul Shack.
"Alonzo!", a busty woman in an apron cried out, then ran up to give him a big hug, "Ooo, looks like you've got a nice group with you today, young and strong, mm-hmmm", she looked the guys up and down, pausing at Jack with a quizzical look "You the batboy?"
"I'm the second baseman, are you going to get me some food, or should I find someone who's actually doing their job?"
At that, she grabbed Jack by the ear and lead him to the banquet room, Jack squealing the whole way, and plopped him down in a chair.
"Now then," she said sweetly to the rest of the team, "I'm Sally, this is my restaurant. You boys all have a seat, we'll be serving you family style, and I hope y'all brought your appetites"
Alonzo sat down next to Jack, smacking him in the back of the head.
Food arrived almost immediately, and it was fabulous. Fried okra, cornbread, cowpeas, ribs, fried chicken, collard greens, fried catfish, with lemonade to drink. It was awesome.
But it wasn't over. Sally brought out coffee and her award winning sweet potato pie.
Once everyone felt super full, there was just one piece left. Cristobal pushed it towards Lance Derby, "Come on homes, eat up, it's all you"

At the other end of the table, Sally was taking quite a liking to Dusty, rubbing his shoulders, saying what a big guy he was. He looked across at Bob for assistance, and when Sally left the table for a moment, Bob whispered some advice to Dusty.
When Sally came back, she told Dusty that everyone had gone on break, and asked if he could please give her a hand for a minute?

"Thanks Dusty, you were a big help, come say hello next time you're in Gainesville"
"Yes, ma'am, you're welcome, and I sure will ma'am."

...meanwhile, Lance, although he had already eaten two slices of pie, plus ribs, beans, greens, and so much more, felt like he could juuust squeeze in one more slice of pie.
"There you go big guy," said Cristobal, elbowing Cassius, sitting to his right, "that's how you get strong, like Cristobal"

"Hey kid, we should room together, and I can teach you all my hitting techniques" said Cristobal.
Lance, who'd inexplicably been sleeping on the bus, says ok.

Tuesday, December 1st

At practice that day, Alonzo had the new guys come in early and work on the Top Speed Machine.
