Post subject:  Minimum Post Count to Unlock Forum Features

After the recent events of "burner" accounts used to just troll and annoy the forum, I want to propose something that I'll talk to DS about to try to curb the use of these.

I propose implementing a minimum post count to unlock different features of the forum, i.e. using the chat room and creating new topics. This would help to identify multi accounts by users and pre-emptively take care of them before they make more of a nuisance on the forum than necessary.

I'm going to talk to DS about this, and hopefully get a dialogue going on this. Thoughts, everybody?

The only problem is that these users could still spam regular topics/bump dead ones with nonsense. Maybe there could be a time limit for those who have less than the minimum post count so there's time for a mod to review the post made. I don't know if there's a way to do that, though. A nitpicky thing is that we'd have to edit the "post count does not matter" in the Community Guidelines.

Eh, we do have a fair amount of users who join to ask questions about the game, and I wouldn't want to ward those off...

I agree with these two, people will just spam old topics if they feel like it and it'll turn away new members.

Something that might be helpful -- and I don't know if it's possible -- would be to set up some way so the system would only allow 1 user per IP address? Like if someone tried to set up a 2nd account on the same IP that was already registered the forum would let them in but lock their account like it does with COPPA users, and the user with the existing acct on that IP would have to explain why the 2nd acct was being created to be let in??

(so basically like in my case, Kevin would've been locked out of making any posts/chat messages until I had explained the situation to dish/DS and gotten clearance from them)

Once again, someone could just say it's their siblings account and it would be very hard to disprove them until they started posting.

Also each device has its own IP. So that wouldn't prevent someone from causing trouble on a new tablet/phone/laptop/pc or even gaming platform.

The game is 9 years old, let's just force new users to wait to be approved. Let them try to post one thing, and it doesn't become permanent - AND they can't post anything else - until it is approved.

Talked with DS over PM the last day or so, and here's the lowdown on what we're trying:

I set any users of less than 15 posts into a subgroup that doesn't allow them access to the chat. If this doesn't work we will probably go to Admin-enforced user registrations

I think this is a good starting point. A lot of these accounts (woke11, Zezak, etc.) are just targeting the chat, so keeping them out of it until they actually contribute to the forums is probably a good idea. And if someone comes on and starts spamming in an obvious effort to circumvent that rule -- for one, they can be banned/have posts deleted; and for another, a lot of (legitimately) new users won't know about this rule, so someone spamming a bunch may raise a red flag about the potential of being a multi account without having to go into IPs and such.

Yep, and this is essentially what I wanted to have accomplished. Maybe I was a little too extreme in regards to my list in the OP, I just wanted the chat regulated and force new users to post something before being able to use the chat. We'll see if it works.

Yeah, I think not allowing users to create topics would've driven people away unnecessarily.

I go to Atlanta and I come back to this. Sounds good though, lets see how it goes.

ok so it's been like 6 months, we can evaluate this rule/feature right

personally i feel like it should be removed. i've noticed a lot of new users posting one-off questions recently and there's a V slim chance of them getting answered if the post isn't officially approved until like 2 weeks later when that topic will be buried underneath all 10 of our active topics lmao

but fr idk if it's doing much good at this point, most of the trolly shit went away, and it's hurting our ability to bring in new members imo

It boggles the mind to even think that this place is still getting new members
