Yes, that’s right — we made another trade, and it’s still only April! This is definitely not a thing that led to catastrophic results in past iterations of this log! (don’t worry though I’m probably done trading for a while)

Here are some numbers, so you can look at them.

This season, Giancarlo Stanton has a slash line of .346/.382/.538 with Miami, registering 2 home runs and 6 RBI. Chris Carter has only appeared in six games off the bench, going hitless in 8 at-bats, with two strikeouts. We also threw in a lot of cash, like A-Rod salary type cash.

We bought pretty low on all three players, who have struggled to get going in this weird amalgamation of timeframes. No wonder — Posey thinks it’s 2008, when he hadn’t even been drafted yet; Inciarte thinks it’s 2016, where he’s currently hitting .242 (but that defense tho!!!!1!); and Cahill thinks it’s like 2024 I guess? (he would be like 36 if this was the case).

Posey, so far, is hitting .192/.236/.288, with zero homers and only four RBI. Inciarte has been almost as bad, hitting just .226/.250/.290, matching Posey’s home run and RBI totals (0 and 4), and adding only one stolen base. Cahill has been a long reliever or something for the White Sox, and is 1-0 with a 4.35 ERA and 11:6 K/BB ratio in 10.1 innings across 6 appearances.

I was setting up for my interview with the new manager of the Miami Marlins when I noticed a boy walk into the room. He looked to be about high school-aged, maybe fifteen or sixteen years old — his face was clean-shaven, save for a couple patches of peach fuzz, he had long, blonde hair, and deep blue eyes, he was wearing a tie-dye tank top and jeans sagged low enough to show off his American Eagle boxers, and his ears were pierced with stud earrings that appeared to be pink.

I sure as heck didn’t expect that this kid was who I was supposed to be interviewing, but sure enough, this was Mikey Roberts, the 19-year-old manager (and starting catcher) for the Miami Marlins.

Just one year removed from graduating at the top of his class from Carver High School in Atlanta, Georgia, Roberts was now being thrust into full-time duty as Major League Baseball’s first player-manager since Pete Rose in 1986.

I started off the interview by addressing his appearance. “As a nineteen-year-old, you obviously are held to a lower standard than, say, a veteran manager in his fifties.”

He laughed and cleared his throat. “Yes, I’d say so. However, there’s definitely still a lot of pressure to perform on and off the field. I just get to do it while still having a bunch of fun and staying comfortable.”

“About the earrings,” I said. “I’ve noticed you also wear pink wristbands during the games.”

Mikey interjected. “Yes, those are to show support for breast cancer awareness, a cause that touches me personally, as my mom died from cancer two years ago. Once I get my career going, I also want to start a non-profit to help raise awareness and help fund research so we can finally cure this horrible disease.”

“Wow, that’s very noble of you,” I said. “Not many players start non-profits, and especially not at such a young age… Speaking of being young, how have you handled the adjustment to the MLB?”

“Um, yeah. So I expected it to be hard, since I completely skipped college and the minor leagues, so I didn’t really have very high expectations for myself. I basically just want to go out every day and compete as hard as I can, until we can get another catcher so I can focus more on training and of course coaching the team.”

“So are you exploring trade options, or looking at adding someone through the draft in June?”

“I honestly don’t know, that’s up to the Boss to decide, but I’ve told them that I would be open to moving to the bench for the right player.”

It was just then that I noticed the backpack slung over his left shoulder. “You can take that off, you know.”

“Oh! I didn’t even notice I still had that with me! I didn’t have time to stop back at my apartment after class, you know…”

“Class?”

“Yeah! I’m taking some classes at a community college here, most of them are online but this one was a lab so I had to go on campus. I have another class in about half an hour too, so I better get going,” Mikey said.

We shook hands and parted ways; Mikey sped off in a flashy-looking sports car, while I drove back to the office in my boring old sedan to finish my story.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Was it really the right call to hire a 19-year-old as MLB’s first player-manager in thirty years? Mikey Roberts talks about the challenges he has faced as the youngest player (let alone manager) in all of Major League Baseball and more inside.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Roberts, 19, has overcome all kinds of adversity in his young life. When he was just four years old, his youngest brother died during childbirth. Growing up in Atlanta, he struggled to find his way amidst the gang-riddled streets, but his mother’s guidance had always helped get him back on the right track. However, when she passed away after a year-long battle with cancer in 2014, Roberts was thrown off emotionally and had to repeat the eleventh grade.

Today, though, he is all smiles after successfully completing his high school education. He plans on obtaining an associate’s degree within three years, and is currently attending a local community college. Balancing his studies with his duties as both a player and a manager certainly comes with its challenges, but Roberts is well-equipped to handle them.

As a player, Roberts is the Miami Marlins’ current starting catcher, but he knows that could change at any moment. “I’ve told [the bosses] that I would be open to moving to the bench for the right player,” Roberts said. “I [just want] to go out every day and compete as hard as I can.”

Roberts also knows that there is a lot of buzz surrounding the club. “I didn’t really have very high expectations…[but] there’s definitely still a lot of pressure to perform on and off the field.”

With the Marlins off to a great start, we will certainly see Roberts’ name in the press more often, as the youngster has been praised for his unconventional strategy. Most teams rarely switch up their lineups and keep a set hierarchy in the bullpen, but Roberts believes in flexibility first and foremost, whether it’s rotating his bench players into the lineup, jumbling up the batting order, or using pitchers in varied roles.

We won 5 out of 7 at home and will now face the Montreal Expos. The Expos are currently 4 GB in the NL East, tied with two other teams for second place in the division.

Montreal has gotten great seasons from right-handers Ricky Nolasco (2.12 ERA, 4 QS in 4 GS) and Jacob deGrom (2.93 ERA, 5 QS in 5 GS) as well as third baseman Todd Frazier (.319/.453/.536). Outfielder Adam Eaton is another player to watch as he carries a .308 batting average into the series.
