RHP Aaron Nola (2008 debut) vs. RHP Edwin Jackson (2008 debut)

Kris Bryant is kind of good at baseball. So is Aaron Nola.

Bryant hit two home runs and went 3 for 4, Nola pitched a complete game shutout, and the Miami Marlins prevailed 10-0 in their third consecutive shutout to open the season.

In the first inning, Bryant hammered an opposite-field homer into the second deck at Citizens Bank Park. He followed that up with a two-run single in the fifth, starting a rally that led to eight consecutive hits and five runs scoring in the frame. In the very next inning, Bryant hit a 446-foot home run to dead center. Mike Trout added even more insurance with a two-run shot later in the inning.

The only point of concern for Miami is the baserunning miscues of rookie shortstop Trea Turner, who was caught stealing and also thrown out trying to stretch a single into a double in the fourth.

Utility infielder Taylor Featherston made his first career appearance in the outfield, spelling Christian Yelich in left field in the seventh inning and recording one putout.

“Look, if you can’t get me more than four at-bats in four games, I’m going to have to demand a trade.”

“Look, maybe if you were hitting better than 0 for 4, I would get you into more games. Now fix that shitty attitude and go hit in the cages, you’re up next with Taylor.”

Chris Carter was getting sick of the disrespect. So was Mikey Roberts. Their teammates had started noticing the tension between the two growing with each passing day, and had begun to call secret meetings without the two to discuss the next logical step.

Taylor Featherston, Carter’s hitting partner that day, had decided to step up and talk to the team’s general manager, a man known only as “Chief” to the outside world.

Chief indicated that he was busy that day, but would speak to Featherston as soon as he finished up some important matters; this took about an hour, all the while Featherston waited outside his boss’s boss’s office. He did not have much time to kill, as he had to be back in the clubhouse by 5:00 to get ready for that evening’s game against Philadelphia, but he sat down with Chief and told him everything he knew.

“Well, I’ll certainly try to find a way to resolve this conflict,” Chief said dismissively. “Thank you for bringing this to my attention.”

Weekly MVP awards were announced by commissioner Rob Manfred! The American League winners were Seattle DH David Ortiz (AVG .455, HR 5, RBI 12) and Texas CF Billy Hamilton (AVG .476, HR 1, RBI 4), and the National League winners were Miami teammates, 1B Paul Goldschmidt (AVG .583, HR 3, RBI 9) and 3B Kris Bryant (AVG .480, HR 5, RBI 9). Congratulations to the players on this great achievement.

We also have a trade to announce, as the Miami Marlins and New York Yankees have reportedly agreed to a three-player trade. Miami would send right-handed pitcher Lucas Giolito to New York, receiving catcher/left fielder Blake Swihart and right-handed pitcher Tayron Guerrero.

On the season, Giolito (who is considered one of the top prospects in all of baseball) has pitched in two games, throwing 2 shutout innings, allowing 3 hits, striking out 3 and recording one win. Swihart has recorded a batting average of .412 with one home run and four RBI, and Guerrero has made one start for New York, allowing two earned runs in 5.1 innings (3.38 ERA).

With my dad’s birthday coming up, I decided to take some time away from the team to surprise him with a visit and some gifts. With the team record at 5-0, I left the team in the capable hands of our coaching staff and my assistant GM, Marvin, and booked the next flight home.

I arrived at the airport in the early afternoon, and called an Uber to drive me to my parents’ house in the suburbs.

I intended for the week-long vacation to be a relaxing trip, but I had brought my work laptop and phone just in case something came up.

And, of course, something did come up, as the clubhouse feud between two of our players, Chris Carter and Mikey Roberts, raged on, and I gave the Uber driver a five-star rating and immediately checked my emails, of which I had already received eighteen (only two were of any importance, but that’s beside the point).

I walked up the driveway and rang the doorbell. My parents had moved out of our old house and into a new, more accessible one in the past few months, and I had only been back to see it once, just after I got the job as GM. My mom, of course, acted surprised to see me, even though the two of us had been planning the surprise for weeks. My dad was genuinely surprised, and I gave him a giant bear hug as I stepped through the front door and into the new living area, setting my bags gently on the faux-wood vinyl flooring.

The next night, we went to dinner at one of our favorite places, a sports bar that just happened to have our game against the Mets. I watched intently as I ate my usual pasta dish; Chris Sale pitched well and led us to a 5-1 victory, although we had dropped the prior game, leaving us at 6-1 on the season.

I continued to spend time with my parents throughout the week. My mom had been retired for years, and my dad was soon to join her, as he was no longer the only breadwinner in the family and he had saved up a very hefty retirement fund that was sure to keep the two of them going for quite a while, even without whatever I kicked in to help out. We went first to the town mall, then hung out at home playing board games over the weekend, but unfortunately I had to attend to some business late Sunday night, and we had to finish the tournament on Monday morning, the morning of my dad’s 64th birthday.

By then, the team had dropped three out of seven to sink the record to 9-3, still good for first place in the division, and was heading into an off day, after which I would rejoin the team back in Miami for a three-game series against the Phillies.

I surprised my dad that morning by giving him his birthday gift early. It was a small penguin sculpture that he had once seen at a restaurant, and I had remembered that he loved it so much and had bought it upon seeing it on Amazon. I also gave him a couple of gift cards to two of his favorite sneaker stores, as well as a poorly made (but handmade) birthday card and, of course, another big hug.

After lunch with my folks, I skipped town, catching an early-afternoon flight back to Miami, where I immediately headed for my office to begin working on something that would bring hope to Marlins fans far and wide.
