Just thought I'd let you know. That spreadsheet was insanely aesthetically pleasing.

“Oh, come on. We really got a kid managing this team?”

Chris Carter didn’t seem too happy about this.

“Chill out, dude. We’re kind of all kids here.”

Nomar Mazara, himself just 19 years of age, pointed out something that was, in a way, true — not a single player on the Marlins’ roster was over 29 years old, and many of them were entering their rookie seasons.

“Figures the guy they call the ‘Big Chill’ would be telling people to chill out.”

“And who are you?”

“Mikey Roberts, at your service. Rainbow Beach Stadium… The place I dreamed about… It’s finally mine.”

Mazara and Carter looked at each other with raised eyebrows, as if they both thought Mikey was a bit nutty. (Which he was.)

“Anyways, we better get to practicing if we want to go undefeated and win the World Series, which, of course, is our goal,” Mikey said.

“Fat chance you’re getting me to practice. I’ve got ten years on you, and a hundred pounds to boot,” the veteran slugger Carter said defiantly.

“Fat chance you’re starting a game. Have fun on the bench,” Mikey said, flipping Carter off behind his back as he jogged out to the field to warm up.

This week, we’ll take a look at some of the opponents that the Miami Marlins will be facing as they get ready for the season.

First up are our NL East rivals. There are now six teams in the division with the addition of the Montreal Expos as an expansion team.

First up, the Philadelphia Phillies. The Phillies are no longer a team of aging former stars, as the Dream Draft gave them a chance to get significantly younger and they pounced on that opportunity. Right-handers Jeff Samardzija and Vincent Velasquez will anchor the rotation. The Phillies have a strong bullpen with closer Kenley Jansen along with K-Rod, Joaquin Benoit, and Randy Choate all at their disposal.
Offensively, the Phillies don’t seen very strong, but they will make their money on the defensive side with catcher Salvador Perez and outfielder Franklin Gutierrez leading the charge on D. Offensively, Perez, Brett Lawrie, and Denard Span figure to catalyze this offense for Philadelphia. 3B Mike Moustakas and OF Melky Cabrera are also good all-around players.
I expect the Phillies to finish in the middle of the division due to their well-balanced defense and pitching staff.

Next up are the New York Mets. The Mets have a very strong rotation led by RHP Justin Verlander, LHP Steven Matz, and hometown hero Bartolo Colon (!). Young right-handers Alec Asher and Chase Anderson fill out the rotation. The Mets’ bullpen is weak, although lefty Zach Britton is a good option at closer.
Offensively, the Mets will be led by 1B Justin Bour, OF Adam Duvall, and OF Jacoby Ellsbury. This trio will carry a large portion of the load for New York as there isn’t much else available for them. Their team defense appears to be below-average, with Ellsbury their only plus defender. They do have a lot of positional flexibility with utility players such as Emilio Bonifacio, Josh Harrison, and Brock Holt allowing them to move players around the field.
Overall, I think this team will struggle to hit enough to back up their strong pitching staff, and their bullpen may be too weak to hold leads game in and game out.

Third up are the Atlanta Braves. The Braves went after veterans in the draft, but did make out with a few young guns when it was all said and done. On the pitching side, Atlanta is very weak, with RHPs Tanner Roark and Tyson Ross anchoring their rotation and lefty Tony Watson closing (but it only gets worse from there!)
On offense, the Braves are led by sluggers Kyle Schwarber, Lucas Duda, and Joc Pederson. They have a very strong, balanced offense with a strong tendency toward power hitting. Defensively, the Braves have zero plus defenders, but don’t really have any weak spots either (unless Schwarber starts in left).
Overall, I think this team may hit enough home runs to balance out their weak pitching, and could have a shot at the division crown.

Next up are the Nationals. The Nationals picked one of the best rosters I’ve seen, with a pitching staff featuring the likes of Yu Darvish, Drew Smyly, and Kyle Hendricks in the rotation. The Washington bullpen is somewhat weak with Jake Diekman the team’s only true late-innings option, but their starting rotation is both talented and deep.
On offense, the Nationals are led by everyone. Their worst players are Kurt Suzuki and Ryan Raburn, who are serviceable major leaguers. Their best players are probably Jose Altuve and George Springer, though cases could definitely be made for Yoenis Cespedes, Brandon Crawford, or even Chris Davis or Kyle Seager. What I’m trying to say is, they’re really deep, and they’re gonna beat everyone by a lot.
Overall, there’s no way this team doesn’t win it all.

Finally, the Expos. Montreal has a solid pitching staff led by starters Jacob deGrom, Rick Porcello, and Dallas Keuchel as well as a very strong bullpen. Their back-end is questionable, and they will need to lean on their bullpen heavily due to low starter stamina.
On offense, Montreal is led by infielders Dustin Pedroia, Todd Frazier, and Corey Seager as well as outfielder Hunter Pence. Mallex Smith and Adam Eaton provide speed on the bases, with Eaton and catcher Robinson Chirinos providing plus (or even double-plus) defense.
Overall, this team has a few talented players, but lacks any coherent team focus, and probably won’t be in the race for very long.

Today, we’ll preview the NL Central division, a five-team group that the Marlins should have a few encounters with over the course of the season.

First off are the Chicago Cubs. The Cubs have lost much of their young core, and while they do have some young players still, they retained zero players from the previous roster and are a much older team now.
Their starting rotation is solid and fairly young, with the 1-2-3 punch combo of Martin Perez, Sonny Gray, and Chris Archer followed by an upside pick in Tyler Chatwood and a veteran pitcher in Tim Stauffer. In the bullpen, the Cubs will have Nick Masset, Neftali Feliz, and Wade Davis in middle relief forming the bridge to 27-year-old closer Orrin Key. Key throws the rare gyroball pitch, and does it at a high velocity topping out over 100 MPH. He also has a nasty slider and a slow curve that net him tons of strikeouts.
On the offensive side, Chicago is led by three veterans: first baseman Albert Pujols, right fielder Nick Markakis, and 35-year-old left fielder Scott Quinn, a slugger who struggles against southpaws but is a well-known clutch hitter. The catching battle between Welington Castillo and Matt Wieters will be interesting to follow, as will the progress of the Cubs’ young position-player trio of Orlando Arcia, Alex Bregman, and Odubel Herrera, the latter of whom is the team’s only plus defender (albeit in a tough position, center field).
Overall, the Cubs look to be a very balanced and well-positioned team. Look for them to make a run in the postseason and possibly end the infamous Curse in 2008.

Next will be the Milwaukee Brewers. The Brewers also have a few interesting young players, but skew very old overall.
On the pitching side, Milwaukee is led by a pair of hard-throwing youngsters in RHP Mike Foltynewicz and LHP Carlos Rodon. Righty Mike Mathis, a 42-year-old and longtime veteran who mixes six solid pitches in his arsenal, will help provide stability while right-handers Jason Hammel and Brandon McCarthy provide more veteran leadership. The Brewers do not have much of a bullpen, with Ross Ohlendorf tentatively plugged in as the team’s closer.
Offensively, the Brewers are led by infielders Adam Lind, Ryan Zimmerman, and Rougned Odor and right fielder Jay Bruce. Odor is the team’s best and youngest position player, but the Brew Crew doesn’t have much depth past him and the trio of veteran power hitters. Defensively, Milwaukee is regarded as having zero plus defenders, with Lind and Bruce grading out as minus defenders at their respective positions.
It’s quite hard to come up with something encouraging to say about this team. Maybe they can get the number-one pick next year?

Third up are the St. Louis Cardinals. The Cardinals went with a very different strategy, stocking up with seven starting pitchers and only two true relievers.
St. Louis has plenty of rotation depth, with the aforementioned seven starters providing length both in the rotation and in the bullpen. Righties Danny Salazar and Chris Tillman will lead the rotation, with upside picks Lance McCullers and Brandon Finnegan rounding out the rotation along with veteran right-hander Jake Peavy. In the bullpen, Stephen Strasburg and Roberto Osuna will lead the relief corps, with Osuna slated to close and Strasburg serving as the main set-up man.
On offense, the Cardinals will be led by power-hitting middle infielders Neil Walker and Trevor Story, as well as versatile outfielders Steven Souza Jr. and David Peralta and all-around infielder Anthony Rendon. St. Louis boasts one of the game’s best defensive catching tandems, with a plus defender in Christian Vazquez and one of the game’s better pitch-framers in Jose Lobaton (although we expect little to no offensive punch out of this duo). Also on defense, both Walker and Story are viewed as minus defenders up the middle.
Overall, the Cardinals’ high-upside offensive attack and gob of pitching depth should keep them floating above .500 in the NL Central division race, but we don’t expect them to go far in the playoffs should they get there.

Next up are the Cincinnati Reds. The Reds selected a balanced roster, with some young players but a mostly veteran-laden roster and clubhouse.
On the pitching side, the Reds are led by right-hander Matt Sweeney, a 34-year-old who is known for only throwing fastballs (a four-seam and two-seam variety, and nothing more). Lefties Patrick Corbin and Julio Urias will provide upside at the back end of the rotation, with right-hander Tony Barnette returning from a stint in Japan to serve as Cincinnati’s closer.
On offense, Cincinnati is led by a trio of talented infielders, with first baseman Jose Abreu, shortstop Troy Tulowitzki, and power-hitting third baseman Timmy Howell leading the offense, backed up by outfielders Adam Jones and Yasiel Puig. Defensively, Nick Ahmed is a plus at shortstop, but he is likely to only be a backup. Veteran catcher David Ross is a great clubhouse leader and one of the best framers in the game.
Overall, the Reds have some interesting upside, but need to address a few holes in their roster to make a run in the playoffs.

Last up will be the Pittsburgh Pirates. The Pirates skewed young with their picks, and while they should be out of the race this season, they have the potential to improve and possibly become a contender in the future.
On the mound, the Pirates are led by righties Carlos Martinez and Kenta Maeda. Two more young pitchers in Tyler Skaggs and Jon Gray are offset by the veteran presence of RHP Ervin Santana in the fifth slot. The Pirates have a very weak bullpen, with lefty Adam Loewen slated to close.
On offense, the Pirates’ best hitters are second baseman Brian Dozier, center fielder Dexter Fowler, and utility player Howie Kendrick. Young outfielder Michael Taylor will be relied upon as a future offensive catalyst as well as a plus defender in the field. Taylor and middle infielder Asdrubal Cabrera are Pittsburgh’s only plus defenders.
Overall, there’s no way a team like this can make a run this season, but if they draft well and possibly add a few players in free agency, Pittsburgh could be well on their way to a World Series.

Today we will preview the NL West Division.

First off will be the Arizona Diamondbacks. Arizona selected a good cross-section of players ranging from the young to the old, from Asia to South America, and came out with a very good roster.
The pitching staff is headlined by ace Jake Arrieta, who is complemented in the rotation by lefty Rich Hill. The Diamondbacks have a serviceable back-end, but their bullpen is also a strength, led by three very good, if not great, relievers in Kelvin Herrera, Trevor Rosenthal, and Glen Perkins. This trio should be able to lock down plenty of wins for Arizona.
On offense, Arizona is led by one of the league’s premier hitters in Miguel Cabrera. Cabrera is joined by Dee Gordon, Manny Machado, and Francisco Lindor to form one of the league’s best infields. In the outfield, playing time will be split four ways between Marlon Byrd, Andrew McCutchen, Ichiro, and 32-year-old Shane Foster, an all-around solid player who is popular in the clubhouse and with fans. Behind the plate will be 30-year-old Peter Ashby, an elite contact hitter who also provides good defense and great framing ability. On defense, Machado and Lindor are both plus defenders, with no minus defenders.

Next up are the Colorado Rockies. The Rockies’ pitching staff is led by RHP Gerrit Cole, with Johnny Cueto serving as a good #2 starter. In the bullpen, David Robertson will close, with Luke Gregerson and Andrew Miller also in line for holds and save chances.
On offense, Colorado is led by shortstop Xander Bogaerts, first baseman Mitch Moreland, and the outfield trio of Charlie Blackmon, Carlos Gomez, and Carlos Beltran. Catching prospect Jorge Alfaro should get an extended look behind the dish with veteran Bobby Wilson his only competition. Overall, while this offense doesn’t look great on paper, the Coors Field effect should boost their numbers. On defense, the Rockies have neither any plus nor any minus defenders.

Next up are the San Diego Padres. The Padres have a strong starting rotation, led by righties Jordan Zimmermann, Raisel Iglesias, and Matt Wisler and lefty Jaime Garcia. Their bullpen is very weak, however, as Manny Parra is currently slated to close.
On offense, the Padres are somewhat weak, with Matt Holliday and Freddie Freeman probably their top two hitters. Prospects and young players such as Joey Gallo, J.P. Crawford, Dalton Pompey, and Addison Russell have the chance to make a big impact with this club. On defense, Russell (plus SS) counters out Nick Castellanos (minus 3B).

Fourth up will be the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Dodgers are a veteran-heavy team, with a pitching staff headlined by RHP Max Scherzer and LHP Matt Moore to go with a slew of veterans in the back-end and the bullpen.
On offense, Los Angeles is led by Brandon Phillips, I guess. This is the one area where young guys could make an impact, with Ketel Marte, Michael Conforto, and Jorge Soler probably getting a lot of playing time this season. Defensively, 33-year-old first baseman Casey Casey grades out as a plus defender along with Conforto in left, although Soler and Gerardo Parra both grade out as minus defenders in the outfield.

Last but not least (ok probably least) are the San Francisco Giants. Despite the fact that this is an even year, the Giants don’t look like they have much of a shot at the title.
The pitching staff is led by 41-year-old lefty Bobby Groce, who still has three plus offspeed pitches and great control, although his 85 MPH fastball will almost certainly get hammered. Past that, the Giants’ best pitcher is either Steven Wright or Ken Giles, and it only goes further downhill from there. Chien-Ming Wang is somehow slated to close over the likes of Giles and Sergio Romo.
On offense, San Francisco is led by Matt Carpenter and the outfield trio of Randal Grichuk, Lorenzo Cain, and Nelson Cruz. The Giants somehow got both of Miami’s catchers with J.T. Realmuto and Jeff Mathis forming some sort of a timeshare behind the plate. Also, they did keep Brandon Belt, so that’s good, I guess. Defensively, San Francisco’s only plus defender is center fielder Cain.

the quickest and also shortest preview of the entire American League ever, AKA the "let's get on with the games and stuff" special

AL EAST

Red Sox are very meh. Best player is, like, Jason Kipnis? Bullpen solid, lots of power arms. Khris Davis = many HR
Yankees prolly not buying a title this year. Best player is clearly Jose Fernandez. Second-best player is uhhhhhhhh they don't have two good players lmao. They have two relievers in their starting rotation, and also Hideo Nomo (49/G/G) and David Newhan (1/G/G/G/G/G/G).
Blue Jays solid, rotation is very good led by Stroman and 39yo Andy Cooper (87/A/A). Offense led by Rizzo and David Wright. Also, Cheslor Cuthbert
Orioles are very bad. Masahiro Tanaka apparently wants to go back to Japan soon and I don't blame him with this roster AKA "let's get all the old slugger types" (A-Gone, A-Rod, even Justin Upton kinda counts)
Rays are probably the most complete team in the division, maybe not the best. Led by Greinke, Pollock, Braun, Brantley, and young RHP Davis Huffman, who throws gas and also is really good at everything else.

AL CENTRAL

Indians offense is pretty bad, but bullpen (led by Chapman/Melancon) and defense of Hedges behind plate might save them. Best hitter is Encarnacion.
Tigers are kinda stacked -- King Felix, Quintana, Correa, Marte, heck they even got Domonic Brown!
Twins are also pretty good, weak back-end. Very good team defense. Best hitters are Wil Myers, Cano, Alex Gordon. Hamels/Wainwright headline rotation with Kimbrel at closer
White Sox are also very good. Price (no not the guy from my MLB Life log), Posey, Votto, Arenado, CarGo(nzalez), etc. Good speed off bench.
Royals are mediocre. Maybe if Ryan Howard returns to form, and they manage to get a sub-5 ERA out of fifth starter Kyle Kendrick, they'll have a fighting chance.

AL WEST

Angels have zero relievers; strong rotation but like why did they draft 8 SP and 0 RP and also why is Mark Trumbo their only somewhat decent offensive player (jk ily Tyler Collins)
Mariners: good rotation, potentially deadly offense. Bumgarner/Harvey headline rotation. Papi/Beltre headline offense. Prepare yourselves.
Athletics = at least they got Munenori Kawasaki as a consolation for this undeniably shitty roster
Rangers: THOR THOR THOR also hey they have Donaldson and Harper too
Astros: lol how is this considered a Major League Team i guess their bullpen's sorta okay and they have B.J. Upton (I forgot to change his name)
last but not least, the LasVegas LineDrives are a middle-of-the-road team. Need to add 2 SP, as they currently have Dellin Betances and Matt Bush in their rotation (holy shit that bullpen though)

METS SERIES PREVIEW

Wednesday, 4/2/08
LHP Clayton Kershaw vs. LHP Steven Matz

Thursday, 4/3/08
LHP Chris Sale vs. RHP Bartolo Colon

PLAYERS TO WATCH
RF Adam Duvall (3/E/A/F/D/C/D, Clutch Hit 4, VS Lefty 2, Timely Whiff, Pull Hitter, Aggressive HTR)

The 28-year-old Duvall is able to play the "four corners" positions and is the Mets' best power hitter.

LHP Steven Matz (97/B/B, 2SFB 1, H-SLD 1, CB 4, CHG 2, w/RISP 4, Recovery 4, Groundball P, Safe Pitch, Power P)

Matz, 26, will make his first Opening Day start for New York in the series opener. He will have a tough matchup with ace Clayton Kershaw opposing him.

CF Jacoby Ellsbury (2/D/D/B/E/B/D, Tough Out, Consistency 2, Spider Catch)

24-year-old Ellsbury will man center field and is likely to bat at the top of the order for the Mets. Expect highlight plays in the field and plenty of action on the basepaths.

OPENING DAY

Miami Marlins vs. New York Mets

Shea Stadium

LHP Clayton Kershaw (2008 debut) vs. LHP Steven Matz (2008 debut)

In a battle of two top young lefties, a pitchers' duel was expected. But not this intense of a duel.

Clayton Kershaw did his part, firing eight shutout innings. But it was from the bench, six innings later, that he finally watched his team take the lead for good.

Mets starter Steven Matz was still in the game when Kris Bryant came up to bat with one on and two out in the top of the 14th inning. But he wasn't in the game after Bryant connected on a two-run shot to left-center to finally score the game's first runs.

Rookie pitcher Lucas Giolito pitched the 13th to earn the win, and fellow rookie Jameson Taillon worked a scoreless 14th for the save.

Why does it say Kershaw got the win in the box score if he only pitched 8.2 innings in a 14 inning game.
