So this is something that I thought might be a little different. I've been re-reading through the San Jose Sonics log, and remembered how much I enjoyed it. So I thought it would be a cool thing to make some graphs on Word to give a unique and in-depth look at the season. Here's graph #1, which details the April OPS of the hitters:

Image

The order is based on Plate Appearances, and as we can see, the trendine goes down, which is a good thing, since obviously you want your best players to get the most plate appearances.

Anyway, if you like this log, make sure to follow! Leave any graph suggestions below if you want to see something graphed out from the Sonics log, which you should also check out: viewtopic.php?f=13&t=10607

This is the OPS against-ERA correlation for the pitchers in April. OPS against is normally a good indicator of how a pitcher has pitched

I couldn't find an FIP calculator, but I found a DICE (Defensive Independent Component ERA) one. https://captaincalculator.com/sports/ba ... alculator/

Here's what I found (April stats. I'll do the other months later, and then a full season one)

Starters

Tikal the Echidna- 3.73 DICE, 3.83 ERA- Her DICE and ERA match up pretty much perfectly. While her K/BB ratio wasn't great (1.38), her 0.45 HR/9 was excellent.

Robbins- 3.70 DICE, 3.41 ERA- Robbins had a slightly lower ERA than DICE. He had a nice K/BB ratio 2.27 and his 0.85 HR/9 wasn't bad.

Tails the Fox- 5.45 DICE, 6.52 ERA- Tails' DICE is a full run lower, but he still wasn't good. His 1.56 HR/9 was a big problem, and his K/BB was the same as Tikal's. But at least she kept it in the park.

Wave the Swallow- 4.66 DICE, 5.08 ERA -Wave's ERA was about a half run higher than her DICE. Her 1.27 HR/9 wasn't great, but the 2.11 K/BB was solid.

Scobie- 3.18 DICE, 1.59 ERA- Scobie's minuscule 1.59 ERA wasn't sustainable, but he pitched the best on the starting staff in April before falling to injury. His K/BB (4.00), and HR/9 (0.53) were excellent.

Bullpen

Chip- 2.34 DICE, 0.66 ERA - Once again, a 0.66 ERA wasn't going to be sustainable, but Chip was exceptional in April. His 3.00 K/BB was very good, and he didn't give up a single home run.

Inglett- 4.62 DICE, 5.84 ERA- Inglett struggled in April, but he wasn't quite as bad as his 5.84 ERA. His K/BB was poor (1.17), but he gave up less than a home run per nine (0.73)

Dr. Eggman- 5.42 DICE, 3.75 ERA- Eggman, as the team's closer, actually outpitched his DICE by quite a bit. His 8.00 K/BB was obviously outstanding, but the 2.25 HR/9 was not, which contributed to the poor DICE score.

Chaos- 3.80 DICE, 2.70 ERA-DICE doesn't like the fact that Chaos had a K/BB under 1.00 (0.83). He did manage to keep the ball in the park, as he didn't give up a home run, so that was a big help in keeping runners stranded.

Cream the Rabbit- 5.59 DICE, 8.59 ERA-April was Cream's worst month by far, so it's not a surprise her DICE was poor. It was 3 runs lower than her actual ERA, ironically. She struggled with control (0.75 K/BB), and gave up 1 home run in 7.1 innings (1.23 HR/9)

Mephiles the Dark- 3.33 DICE, 9.00 ERA- Mephiles only tossed 3 innings in April, but the difference between his DICE and ERA was massive. This evened out later in the year.

Big the Cat- 10.71 DICE, 15.43 ERA - No matter how you look at it, Big's first stint in the bigs (lol) was awful. He pitched 2.1 innings, walked 3, struck out 2, and gave up a home run, so it's hardly a surprise his DICE was poor.

DICE is more or less FIP but with a steady constant of 3.00 instead of a variating one like FIP uses

I thought Riley was an easy choice for this type of graph.

Riley started the team as the backup third baseman, making the opening day roster. He came off the bench to pinch hit late in several games.

This graph shows the progression of his OPS from his first to last game with the team. He got off to an 0-4 start to his season. Beginning with his first game as a starter in a 6-3 win at Arizona, up to an 11-5 win over the Mets, Riley's bat heated up to a.250/.294/.500 slash line between those games, with a 1 home run, 4 RBI game in the aforementioned Mets game. At this point, his OPS peaked at .638. After this game, up until his release in Mid-May, Riley failed to get a hit in 14 at bats, and in spite of 4 walks in 18 plate appearances, slashed just .000/.222/.000. At this point, the team decided he was the one on the cutting block to free a spot for Metal Sonic.

*Interesting note- As a starter, he slashed .250/.400/.583, for a .983 OPS in 15 PA. Off the bench, he hit .045/.125/.045 in 24 PA, for a .170 OPS.

Monthly batting:
April- .167/.200/.333, .533 OPS, 1 home run, 4 RBI, 3 runs
May- .000/.286/.000, .286 OPS, 0 home runs, 1 RBI, 1 run

Full Season Stats: 39 PA, 34 AB, 4 R, 4 H, 1 2B, 0 3B, 1 HR, 5 RBI, 5 BB, 10 K, .118/.231/.235, .466 OPS

Advanced Stats: 12.8 BB%, 25.6 K%, .117
ISO, .130 BABIP, 0.69 GO/AO

Here's Fussell's seasonal OPS graphed.

Fussell started the season as the Sonic's backup option in centerfield. He had decent enough abilities to show the team what he could do, but he struggled most of the year.

In April, he got off to a dreadful start. Or horrendous. Or ghastly. Whatever adjective you use, it was not pretty, as he slashed .048/.091/.048 from the first game of the year up to the teams' 13th game. However, a pinch-hit home run in a 5-3 win over the Giants seemed to light a spark, as from that game up to the Sonics' series against the Reds in early May, he hit .281/.378/.469, good for a .847 OPS. However, his bat cooled down from that point on, as he hit .171/.209/.171 up until his release in early June.

Monthly Batting:
April- .156/.224/.267, .491 OPS, 1 home run, 2 RBIs, 2 runs
May- .208/.269/.229, .498 OPS, 0 home runs, 0 RBIs, 7 runs
June- .000/.000/.000, .000 OPS (1 AB), 0 home runs, 0 RBIs, 0 runs

Full Season Stats: 102 PA, 94 AB, 9 R, 17 H, 3 2B, 0 3B, 1 HR, 2 RBI, 8 BB, 4 K, .181/.245/.245, .490 OPS

Advanced Stats: 7.8 BB%, 3.9 K%, .064 ISO, .180 BAPIP, 1.17 GO/AO

Scobie- A Closer Look

Scobie was one of the graybars that made the opening day roster. He made the starting rotation, and pitched there until July, when he got pushed out of the rotation by other pitchers, such as Emerl and Marine. He was promptly dealt to the Brewers in exchange for Wesson. Here's a breakdown of his season (note, he spent a stint on the DL after his first 3 starts in April:

Starts #1, 2, 3:
1-0, 1.59 ERA, 3.18 DICE

#4, 5:
1-0, 5.23 ERA, 4.65 DICE

#6, 7, 8
2-0, 2.89 ERA, 4.02 DICE

#9, 10, 11
1-2, 11.20 ERA, 6.88 DICE

#12, 13, 14
0-2, 3.20 ERA, 4.42 DICE

As we can see, Scobie was very inconsistent, with a series of good starts followed by a series of bad ones, normally in three game intervals..

Season Stats: 5-4, 4.42 ERA, 14 GS, 79.1 IP, 83 H, 43 R, 39 ER, 11 HR, 21 BB, 43 K, 2.04 K/BB, 8 SB, 4 CS, 333 BF

Advanced Stats: 4.88 K/9, 2.38 BB/9, 1.25 HR/9, 12.9 K%, 6.3 BB%, .273/.318/.450 (.768 OPS against), 1.17 GO/AO, 1.31 WHIP, .282 BABIP, 4.51 DICE

Here's the May DICE!

Starters

Tikal the Echidna- 4.78 DICE, 4.81 ERA- Once again, Tikal's DICE and ERA were nearly identical. Her K/BB was poor (0.67), but she still managed to keep the ball in the park (0.69 HR/9).

Tails the Fox- 3.59 DICE, 2.23 ERA- Tails didn't have a high K/9 (4.67), but his BB/9 was excellent (1.83). He also only gave up 0.61 HR/9.

Robbins- 5.61 DICE, 6.68 ERA- Robbins had a poor month of May overall. His poor K/BB (1.38) and HR rate (1.60) contributed to a poor DICE and ERA.

Wave the Swallow- 4.58 DICE, 3.91 ERA -This month, Wave's ERA was more than a half run lower than her DICE. Most of this was due to a lackluster K/BB (1.08), as her 0.71 HR/9 was good.

Inglett- 2.93 DICE, 5.46 ERA- Inglett had a befuddling month of May, as his 5.00 K/BB, and 0.64 HR/9 were excellent, yet his ERA was below average by quite a bit. Yet he had the best DICE on the team. Talk about unlucky.

Scobie- 5.00 DICE, 4.50 ERA- Scobie came off the DL in May and tossed a 3 run, six inning performance against St. Louis in an 8-3 victory. He struck out seven (10.50 K/9) without walking a batter, but he gave up 2 home runs, which hurt his DICE.

Bullpen

Chip- 4.05 DICE, 5.11 ERA - Chip regressed in May after his phenomenal April. He had good strikeout (8.76 K/9) and home run (0.73 HR/9) rates, but his walks (5.84 BB/9) dragged his performance down.

Dr. Eggman- 3.24 DICE, 0.73 ERA- DICE didn't love Eggman's performance as much as ERA, but he was still good enough to win reliever of the month. He had a modest 1.80 K/BB, but he didn't give up a single home run, which was a problem in April.

Chaos- 3.69 DICE, 3.86 ERA -His K/BB was lackluster (1.00), but he didn't give up a home run. Overall, his ERA and DICE matched up well.

Cream the Rabbit- 3.00 DICE, 0.00 ERA-Cream was recalled in late-May, and in 2.1 innings, didn't give up a walk or home run, or strikeout a batter in 8 plate appearances.

Fruto- 6.20 DICE, 1.80 ERA- Fruto tossed 5 innings, gave up 1 home run, 3 walks, and struck out 3. Not too surprising, then, that his DICE was so much higher than his ERA.

June DICE

Starters

Tikal the Echidna- 5.37 DICE, 5.68 ERA- For the third straight month, Tikal's DICE wasn't too far off from her actual ERA. Her ERA was poor, though, as she once again had a K/BB under 1.00 (0.88), and she saw a spike in home runs allowed (1.42 HR/9).

Tails the Fox- 2.79 DICE, 2.84 ERA- Tails' June was legit, as his DICE was almost identical to his already excellent 2.84 ERA. He had a very good K/BB (3.18), and had a very low HR/9 (0.47).

Robbins- 6.34 DICE, 5.46 ERA- Robbins was somehow worse than his actual ERA. His poor DICE stems from a middling K/BB (1.21), and a ghastly home run rate (2.12 HR/9).

Wave the Swallow- 5.13 DICE, 6.83 ERA -Wave wasn't quite as bad as her ERA would suggest. Her K/BB (2.57) was solid, but her home run rate (1.63 HR/9) was too high.

Scobie- 4.70 DICE, 5.53 ERA- Scobie had a poor K/BB in June (1.10), which hurt him. His HR/9 was below average as well (0.98), and he wasn't as bad as his ERA going by DICE.

Bullpen

Chip- 3.86 DICE, 2.57 ERA - Chip had a higher DICE than ERA by more than a run in June. This could be partly explained by a lower strikeout rate (5.14), but his walk (2.57 BB/9) and home run (0.64 HR/9) rates were good.

Dr. Eggman- 6.09 DICE, 7.15 ERA- Eggman's poor DICE and ERA were more due to his awful HR rate (2.38 per 9), rather than his K/BB (2.75).

Chaos- 2.91 DICE, 1.59 ERA -Chaos had an ordinary 1.83 K/BB, but he didn't surrender a home run for a third straight month, which contributed to his excellent numbers.

Cream the Rabbit- 4.46 DICE, 3.09 ERA-Cream's DICE was more than a run higher than her ERA. While she struck out 8 batters without walking one, her poor home run rate (2.31 HR/9) hurt her DICE.

Inglett- 4.19 DICE, 2.55 ERA- Inglett's luck went into the opposite direction in June, as his DICE was more than 1 1/2 full runs higher than his ERA. While his K/BB was solid (2.33), he had a bit of a high home run rate (1.02 HR/9).

Fruto- 2.71 DICE, 1.74 ERA- Fruto had a tremendous June, which was backed up by the Advanced numbers. He had a good K/BB (2.25), and didn't surrender a single home run during the month.

July DICE

Starters

Tikal the Echidna- 3.48 DICE, 2.68 ERA- Tikal had an excellent July, as her K/BB (3.00) and HR/9 against (0.64) were both very good, contributing to her excellent ERA and DICE.

Tails the Fox- 4.34 DICE, 6.16 ERA- Tails was not as bad in July as his ERA would suggest. He had an extremely good K/BB (6.50), but his 1.76 HR/9 was bad.

Wave the Swallow- 4.21 DICE, 2.84 ERA -DICE didn't love Wave's July as much as her ERA, mostly due to average K/BB (1.80) and HR/9 (0.95) rates.

Emerl- 3.78 DICE, 3.50 ERA- Emerl had a very similar DICE and ERA in July. His K/BB was average (1.63), but his HR/9 was excellent (0.50).

Robbins- 2.83 DICE, 0.00 ERA- Robbins had a single start in July before being sent down to Triple A with purple condition. It was a good one, as he tossed six shutout innings against the Mets. He only struck out 2, but walked just 1.

Scobie- 5.02 DICE, 5.02 ERA- A perfect match! Scobie's DICE and ERA were the same in July. His K/BB was okay (1.89), but his 1.57 HR/9 was not.

Bullpen

Chip- 1.77 DICE, 0.79 ERA - Chip was just as good as his ERA in July. He had an absurd 15.00 K/BB and a 0.79 HR/9.

Dr. Eggman- 3.00 DICE, 9.00 ERA- Eggman pitched two innings in July before being sent down with purple condition. He had a K/BB of 1.50 and didn't allow a home run, so his ERA was probably due to small sample size.

Chaos- 2.78 DICE, 3.00 ERA - Chaos' DICE and ERA were not too far off in July. He maintained a good K/BB (2.33), and didn't allow a home run for the 4th straight month.

Cream the Rabbit- 4.13 DICE, 3.38 ERA-Cream's DICE was higher than her ERA mostly due to her 6/8 K/BB (0.75). She kept the ball in the park, as she didn't surrender a home run.

Mephiles the Dark- 2.86 DICE, 3.86 ERA- Mephiles' DICE was a full run lower than his ERA. He was able to strike out two and walked one, and he didn't give up any home runs in seven innings.

Inglett- 3.46 DICE, 7.27 ERA- The difference between Inglett's ERA and DICE would suggest he was unlucky during the month of July. His K/BB was excellent (6.00), and his 1.04 HR/9 wasn't too bad, so it's hard to see why his ERA was so bad (I'll have to calculate the BABIP later).

Fruto- 3.77 DICE, 5.40 ERA- Fruto also had a higher ERA than DICE in July. He had a solid K/BB of 2.00, and a 0.77 HR/9, so his performance may have been better than it was on paper.

Robbins- A Closer Look

Robbins, like Scobie, made the Opening rotation as a graybar player. Armed with a solid curveball/changeup combination, he showed off talent in several starts, however, poor command and a tendency to give up the long ball hurt his overall performance. He worked on his control during practice, but due to this, built up fatigue and was shut down in mid-August due to lingering purple/blue condition.

Starts #1-4
2-1, 3.16 ERA, 3.04 DICE

#5-11
0-4, 6.35 ERA, 5.75 DICE

#12-13
1-1, 1.80 ERA, 2.80 DICE

#14-16
0-1, 9.20 ERA, 9.96 DICE

#17-19
2-0, 2.60 ERA, 4.44 DICE

Season Stats: 5-7, 4.81 ERA, 19 GS, 112.1 IP, 103 H, 63 R, 60 ER, 18 HR, 48 BB, 75 K, 1.56 K/BB, 4 SB, 0 CS, 483 BF

Advanced Stats: 6.01 K/9, 3.85 BB/9, 1.44 HR/9, 15.5 K%, 9.9 BB%, .243/.327/.450 (.777 OPS against), 0.74 GO/AO, 1.34 WHIP, .258 BABIP, 5.08 DICE
