UPCOMING SERIES

Sacramento Slayers (37-23) vs Jacksonville Felines (41-20)

The Slayers face the only team in the NL with a better record than them as they have a 4-game away series against the Felines. This is notably the last series before the inaugural PGL Draft.

The Felines, while possessors of the PGL's best record, look much less tough after trading away star second baseman Simon Tracey to the Iowa City Hatchlings. The trade left scouts perplexed and Felines fans angry despite going 2-0 after the trade. Anyways, here are the Felines players that we need to watch out for in this long series:

Tyler Smith, SS, #14, R/R, 29 years old
3 TRJ, B CON, B PWR, B RUN SPD, A ARM STR, A FLD, B E RES
GM REPORT: Smith is without a doubt the best shortstop, if not player in the entire league. He is the quintessential 5-tool player and is one that any robo-gm would be robo-salivating over. He leads the Felines with a whopping 1.377 OPS, 408 points higher than the 2nd-highest total. That total also has him tied for 2nd in the PGL behind Hatchlings RF Alex Moyer and 1st in the NL with Dinosaurs CF Lon Gaspar (ew). Make no mistake, if any other GMs do these reports, I'd guarantee Smith would be at the top of their lists of Felines players to watch out for.

Doug McDonald, SP, #39, R/R, 27 years old
95 TOP SPD, B CTRL, A STAM, 2SFB 2, H-SLD 5, DCB 3, H-SNK 5
GM REPORT: McDonald will be pitching Game 1 of this series. How well he does will likely set the tone for this entire series. McDonald has emerged as the Felines' ace with a 7-3 record, a 2.66 ERA (good for 3rd in the league), and 99 strikeouts in 81.1 innings, good for a 10.99 K/9. McDonald is a workhorse pitcher who prides himself on keeping the ball down in the zone. Also, what sets him apart is the fact that he refuses to let the pressure of runners in scoring position get to him.

Marcus Williams, RP, #43, L/L, 31 years old
97 TOP SPD, C CTRL, E STAM, 2SFB 2, H-SLD 5, SNK 5, SIFB 4
GM REPORT: Williams has emerged as a top-flite closer in the league, as he currently carries a tiny 1.52 ERA to go with his 11 saves. Williams, like McDonald, keeps the ball low in the zone but also has superb strikeout ability, as he is currently striking out 12.95 batters per 9 innings. Williams is the definition of a relief ace and most if not all the teams in this league covet the stability that he brings out of the closer role.

PROJECTED PITCHING MATCHUP:

Game 1: A. Sanchez (4-3, 3.69) vs. D. McDonald (7-3, 2.66)
Game 2: S. Marcum (6-4, 4.67) vs. Hiroyuki Ibata (96 TOP SPD, C CTRL, A STAM, 2SFB 3, SLD 3, FORK 5, SHU 4; 7-2, 5.33)
Game 3: C.J. Wilson (6-0, 2.43) vs. Tyler Boyd (88 TOP SPD, D CTRL, B STAM, CUT 2, SCB 4; 4-5, 9.10)
Game 4: B. Morrow (2-2, 4.30) vs. Sly Gibbs (91 TOP SPD, C CTRL, A STAM, SLD 3, CB 3, CHG 3; 8-1, 3.30)

Also, another player improved. Franklin Gutierrez's RUN SPD went from a C to a B.

Sacramento Slayers 3 - Jacksonville Felines 1

SUMMARY: The Slayers win the first game of the series thanks to some muscle from the middle of the lineup and a great performance by Anibal Sanchez. The Slayers scored 2 runs in the top of the 4th inning via back-to-back dingers by Jose Bautista and Adam Lind, their 27th and 15th homers, respectively. Those two runs were all Anibal Sanchez needed (though Martin Prado also singled in a run in the 7th), as he was on point today. He went all 9 innings and incredibly only needing 68 pitches to do so. He stayed around the strike zone all game and generated weak contact while doing so. He ran into a bit of trouble in the 9th, as Felines shortstop Tyler Smith hit a sac fly, but Sanchez buckled down and got pinch hitter Joe Heinz to ground out to short to end it.

T. Marvin - 1 IP, 1 H, 2 K, 0 BB, 0 ER, 8.49

With the draft approaching rapidly, GM Preston Greene says he has no real strategy other than to simply draft the best of what's available. However, he notes that age will largely be taken into account, as he said doesn't want to take a couple of 27-year-olds in the draft, because that would be flat-out stupid.

League Blowouts
Dinosaurs smash Schrutes 12-2

PLAYER IMPROVEMENTS
Ramon Troncoso's SCB has upgraded to Lv 4.

What do you mean, some teams are from pennants?

But still, that has to be a ton of players.

You know how when you finish the max amount of seasons in Season mode, it gives you the option to save that team as an arrange team?

That's what I mean.

That is good to know. I never made it that far, but even if you decide to abandon a season mode team after five or six seasons, it might make sense to sim the remaining seasons just to save the team for later.

It sounds cool, but if it takes away from your other logs and stuff, I wouldn't. Plus, it's fun to do things without having to detail everything.

Sacramento Slayers 5 - Jacksonville Felines 4

SUMMARY: The Slayers roll right along as they win Game 2 of the series by a 5-4 score. The tone of the game would be set early as Guillermo Molina led off the game with a homer to left field. However, the Slayers quickly found themselves behind in the bottom of the second as Felines left fielder Alfredo Ortiz led off the inning with a solo shot of his own. Two batters later, first baseman Justin Alvarez also hit a solo homer to give the Felines the lead. The Slayers wouldn't stay down for long, as Jose Bautista hit yet another solo homer (you'll notice a lot of them in this game), his PGL-leading 27th, in the top of the 3rd to tie the game up at 2. In the next inning, Mike Morse hit - you guessed it - a solo shot to give the Slayers the 3-2 lead, which they would relinquish in the bottom of that same inning thanks to Alfredo Ortiz's second solo homer of the game. With the score still 3-3, in the top of the 6th, Adam Lind crushed a 439-foot solo shot to give the Slayers the 4-3 lead. All in all, 8 of the 9 runs scored this game were via a solo home run. The non-homer was an RBI single by Martin Prado in the top of the 7th, which proved to be an important insurance run, as Kent Collier gave up a home run to pinch hitter Ricardo Morales in the bottom of the 8th. Brian Wilson closed out the 9th inning to become the first closer in the league to reach 20 saves. Congrats to him!

Rumors are swirling around that Slayers GM Preston Greene could be looking to trade for a shortstop, which would shift Zobrist over to his natural position of second base and put Prado into a super-utility role. Greene has stated he doesn't mind giving up some of his pitching depth if a good enough trade comes along. Greene also might be looking for a center fielder. We'll see.

Sacramento Slayers 4 - Jacksonville Felines 5

SUMMARY: The Slayers lose in a thrilling extra-inning game. The Felines got off to an early lead in the bottom of the first thanks to a throwing error by catcher Guillermo Molina (note: back in the previous century it was unheard of for Molinas to make errors) and an RBI groundout by Alfredo Ortiz. The Felines would pad the lead in the next inning as center fielder Brian Carter singled home third baseman Richard Ford. The Slayers would score their first run in the top of the third via an RBI single by Molina to make it a 2-run game. It would then become a 3-run game again in the bottom of the 4th as right fielder Troy Pratt blasted a Wilson mistake pitch over the right field wall. The Slayers rallied back in the bottom of the 6th, scoring 2 runs thanks to RBI singles by Adam Lind and Mike Morse, and in the top of the 7th, Adam Jones hit a game tying homer to lead off the inning. It looked like the Slayers would take the lead in the inning as Zobrist singled to center field, but Miguel Montero was thrown out trying to score. From there, the bullpens would keep the game tied at 4 until the bottom of the 10th, when with 2 outs and catcher Wayne Robinson on 3rd, Ford sent the Felines fans home happy with a walk-off single off of reliever Jason Frasor.

After today's win, the Felines hope to get the series split tomorrow.

The rumors have picked up as the Slayers have offered a trade to an unnamed AL East team. However, since he apparently did not contact his trade adviser, it looks to be nothing more than a minor depth move.

Also in the news, an updated all-star vote count and the Players of the Week have been announced, so we'll talk about those soon.
