Sacramento Slayers 2 - Jacksonville Felines 4

SUMMARY: The Slayers drop the 4th game of the series 4-2 in a disappointing end to a series that started out so well for them. Early on, it was evident that this would be a low-scoring game from the start, and both starters maintained a scoreless game until the bottom of the 4th, when Alfredo Ortiz, who had already been having a great series, hit a moonshot to left field to give the Felines a 1-0 lead. Ortiz would later come through again in the bottom of the 6th, when he singled home Brian Carter to make it a 2-run lead. It seemed like that would be the score for the rest of the game, as Felines pitcher Sly Gibbs was cruising for the first 6 innings, but after an Adam Lind single, Mike Morse tied the game with one swing of the bat. Gibbs would, however, settle down and go 8.1 innings. In the bottom of the 8th, star shortstop Tyler Smith, who had been struggling this series, hit a go-ahead 2-run opposite field dinger off reliever J.P. Howell which would give the Felines a 4-2 lead. Closer Marcus Williams recorded the final 2 outs of the game for his 12th save.

They share the same appearance as some of the cyborgs but they're fully robot.

I find it happens a lot, after the first 2 seasons usually. There are a lot less pitchers, or teams need pitching more.

UPCOMING SERIES

Sacramento Slayers (39-25) vs Salt Lake Sting (22-42)

After dropping their last 2 games to shorten their NL West lead to just a half-game over the Gamblers, this series against the last-place Sting comes at a very good time. Both teams, in fact, have been slumping, as the Slayers are 3-5 and the Sting are 2-5 so far in June. Here's a reminder (since I've already written about them before) of who we need to look out for on the Sting:

Austin Grant, C, #14, R/R, 25 years old
3 TRJ, C CON, B PWR, C RUN SPD, B ARM STR, C FLD, D E RES
GM REPORT: The Sting's star catcher is currently leading all catchers in batting average (.399), hits (101), doubles (23), OBP (.485), total bases (157), SLG (.621), and, of course, OPS (1.106). He is without a doubt the best player on the team and definitely one of the most valuable in the league thanks to the position he plays and his all-around skillset.

Robin Holmes, SP, #67, L/R, 29 years old
96 TOP SPD, B CTRL, A STAM, Lv 2 2SFB, Lv 5 SLD, Lv 6 SLV
GM REPORT: Holmes, probably the most frustrated pitcher in the league, will start game 2. Holmes only has 2 wins (yes, we know they don't matter to us) to his credit despite posting ace-level numbers. It's all but a lock that he'll bolt for free agency and he's probably the guy we'll push the hardest to sign.

I'm only reporting on 2 players here. All the other players don't seem that worrisome.

PROJECTED PITCHING MATCHUP:

Game 1: A. Perez (4-2, 6.72) vs. V. Riley (2-7, 11.1)
Game 2: J. Jurrjens (4-3, 3.05) vs. R. Holmes (2-2, 3.23)
Game 3: A. Sanchez (5-3, 3.36) vs. G. Grant (2-6, 8.45)

As you may know now, the Slayers organization offered a trade a couple days ago, and it was officially accepted. The Slayers traded away 24-year-old third baseman Andy LaRoche (2DEEDDE) to the Orlando Squirrels for 23-year-old lefty Andy Perez and 25-year-old shortstop Luis Blanco (2EDCBBD). Perez was immediately called up to the majors after the trade (J.P. Howell was sent down to make room for him), and he will make the spot start in Game 1 of this series. You can already see his current stats above and we'll talk about his skills in a minute. Blanco, meanwhile, will stay in the minors. He's currently hitting .210 with 2 homers and 28 RBI. You may think he's just a throw-in because of his hitting stats, but Blanco is regarded as an above-average fielder at shortstop, who can also fill in at second if need be. Scouts even go as far to say that if he can find a team that will play him full-time at short, he could win a Gold Glove.

Perez is one of the hardest-throwing pitchers in the league, topping out at an eye-popping 102 from the left side. However, his secondary pitches (CUT 3, CHG 2) could use some work, and naturally, his control (F level) is piss-poor. Still, GM Preston Greene tells us Perez is "one of his favorite pitchers in this league," and that he's "overjoyed" that he acquired him for a guy whose path is currently blocked by the PGL home run leader. There's do doubt Perez has got talent, we'll see if he can harness it.

Overall, 4 out of 5 scouts agree: The Slayers won this trade pretty handily.

Sacramento Slayers 4 - Salt Lake Sting 3

SUMMARY: The Slayers defeated the Sting yet again, taking game 1 of the 3-game set. Things didn't look so great for the Slayers at first, as the Sting scored 3 runs in the bottom of the 2nd thanks to a 2-run double by Sting center fielder Marcos Martinez and a fielder's choice from the bat of Sting starter Vaughn Riley. However, if there is anything we know about the Slayers at this point, it is that they will pretty much always find a way to win. The beginning of the Slayers' comeback started in the top of the 5th, as Sean Rodriguez, who received a rare start at second base today as Martin Prado moved to left field while Mike Morse got the day off, drove in Adam Jones with an RBI single. After a wild pitch by Sting starter Vaughn Riley, Prado followed Rodriguez's hit with an RBI single of his own to bring the deficit down to just one. In the following inning, the Slayers would tie the game up at 3 with a sacrifice fly by Adam Lind, scoring Ben Zobrist.

Southpaw Andy Perez was decent in his first start in a Slayers uniform, going 6 innings, just giving up the 3 runs in the 2nd inning and 6 hits. He only struck out 1 batter (it was the pitcher to boot!), a bit underwhelming given reports of his electric fastball, but did get a lot of ground-ball outs and showed the mental fortitude to battle back from what could have been a disastrous start given the early runs he allowed. All in all, Perez definitely could have done a lot worse, and picking up a quality start is certainly a nice way to start off his term with his new ballclub.

The Slayers picked up their go-ahead run in the top of the 7th, as center fielder Adam Jones led off the inning with a home run to the deepest part of Panpaka Park, his 5th of the season. Jones' heroics earned him Player of the Game honors, as he went 3-4, scoring 2 runs and picking up a double in addition to the aforementioned home run.

Brian Wilson pitched a scoreless 9th inning, bringing his save total to a PGL-leading 21 this season.
