Merry Christmas!

This update is my gift to you guys.

6-1-08

Sacramento Slayers 3 - Vancouver Whalers 5

SUMMARY: The Slayers fail to get the sweep, falling to the Whalers by a score of 5-3. The Slayers got off to a bad start in the very beginning, as spot starter Joba Chamberlain gave up an RBI double to third baseman Chris Lynch and a 2-run homer to right fielder Dominick Zerbe in the top of the first. Adam Lind helped decrease the lead with an RBI double of his own in the bottom of that very inning. In the bottom of the second, the Slayers pushed across another run with a 2-out RBI single by Chamberlain. They nearly tied the game up, as Guillermo Molina was robbed of extra bases due to a great running catch by Whalers left fielder Charlie Serrano. The Whalers got 2 2-out RBIs in the top of the third, the second of which knocked Chamberlain out of the game. We fast-forward to the bottom of the 8th now, where the Slayers have their best opportunity to tie the game up. Ben Zobrist had just singled home Guillermo Molina to make it a 5-3 ballgame with no outs. However, Whalers pitcher Kai Davis killed the rally by getting Jose Bautista to ground into a double play. He then struck out Lind to end the inning. Amaury Loaiza closed out the game for his 9th save on the year.

UPCOMING SERIES

Sacramento Slayers (36-21) vs New Orleans Lions (32-25)

While the series is at home, the Slayers still have a tough task ahead of them as they face the Lions, a top-caliber team gunning for a playoff spot, for the first time. Here are the Lions players we need to look out for in this series:

Rico Reyes, RF, #21, L/R, 36 years old
3 TRJ, B CON, B PWR, D RUN SPD, B ARM STR, D FLD, D E RES
GM REPORT: Age is but a number to Reyes, as although he is one of the older bots, he is still proving he is nowhere near obsolete. Reyes tops the Lions with a .384 batting average and is the #3 hitter in the Lions' formidable middle of the order.

Phillip Lopez, 1B, #7, L/L, 28 years old
4 TRJ, C CON, A PWR, D RUN SPD, E ARM STR, B FLD, A E RES
GM REPORT: And here's the #4 hitter! Lopez has solidified himself as one of, if not the best first basemen in the league. He leads the Lions in OPS (1.18), and has also proved to be a superb fielder. He is in his walk year, so he is setting himself up to get paid big money.

Michael Morrison, SP, #26, R/R, 32 years old
105 TOP SPD, E CTRL, A STAM, SPLT 1
GM REPORT: Morrison is probably the best starter we're going to face this series, and his fastball (and the fact that the Game 3 starter, while a better pitcher, will likely only go 3 innings at most) is the reason why. Topping out at 105 mph is no easy feat even for cyborgs, and he'll be tough to time, for sure.

PROJECTED PITCHING MATCHUP:

Game 1: C.J. Wilson (5-0, 2.58) vs. M. Morrison (8-2, 7.82)
Game 2: B. Morrow (2-2, 4.25) vs. Walter Carey (88 TOP SPD, C CTRL, A STAM, SCB 2, CCHG 2, SNK 4; 5-4, 4.95)
Game 3: J. Jurrjens (4-3, 3.12) vs. George Rogers (94 TOP SPD, A CTRL, F STAM, H-SLD 3, CB 2, SPLT 5, SNK 5; 5-3, 4.12)

6-2-08

Sacramento Slayers 4 - New Orleans Lions 1

SUMMARY: we won daggumit. The Slayers jumped out to an early lead in the bottom of the first, as Guillermo Molina and Ben Zobrist led off the inning with back-to-back doubles. Unfortunately, that was all the Slayers could do in the inning. The game would stay at 1-0 until the bottom of the 6th, when after Molina led off the inning with a triple, Ben Zobrist hit a slow roller to shortstop Randall Tyler. Tyler fired home to try to get Molina, but he just barely beat the throw to make it a 2-0 game. Jose Bautista, the next batter, then widened the lead even more with a moonshot to left-center field, his 24th on the year. That homer knocked Lions starter Michael Morrison out of the game. C.J. Wilson was cruising right along up until the 8th inning, where third baseman Randy Bell hit an RBI single to give the Lions their first run. That run made in a 3-run game, thus making Brian Wilson eligible to get a save. He obliged, getting a 1-2-3 inning for his league-leading 19th save of the season.

There are no Slayers hitters in the top three, sadly. However, this IS a team built on pitching, so expect to see a fair share of Slayers All-Stars coming from the pitcher spot.

hi

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
6-3-08
Sacramento Slayers 3 - New Orleans Lions 4
SUMMARY: It was a close game today, unfortunately the Slayers were on the losing end of it. They started out fine, taking an early lead via an RBI single by Adam Lind in the bottom of the first, scoring Jose Bautista from 2nd base. However, the Lions answered back in a big way in the following inning, as third baseman Randy Bell launched a 3-run home run off of Brandon Morrow to make it a 3-1 ballgame. The offenses for both teams stalled until the 5th inning, when the Slayers started to claw their way back into it. In the bottom of the 5th, Ben Zobrist hit a 2-out double to center field, scoring Morrow. However, he was thrown out trying to stretch it into a triple to end the inning. Next inning, the Slayers would tie the game up with a solo homer to center field by Jose Bautista, his 25th of the season and second homer in as many games. Once again, offense came to a halt until the top of the 9th, where first baseman Phillip Lopez would give the Lions the lead with a solo shot of his own to make it 4-3. The game would stay that way, as Lions closer Christopher Gonzalez pitched a scoreless 9th inning en route to his 9th save of the year.
SLAYERS' LINEUP
G. Molina - 1-4, .329
B. Zobrist - 2-4, 2 2B, RBI, .320
J. Bautista - 2-4, 2B, HR (25), RBI, 2 R, .296
A. Lind - 1-4, RBI, .324
B. Morrow - 1-1, R, .278
J. Carlson - 0-0, .000
J. Frasor - 0-0, .333
PH - F. Gutierrez - 0-1, .206
B. League - 0-0, 1.000
LIONS' LINEUP
R. Tyler - 1-4, K, .355
M. Reed - 0-4, .301
R. Reyes - 0-4, .370
P. Lopez - 2-4, HR (17), RBI, 2 R, K, .353 (Player of the Game)
J.C. Palermo - 2-4, R, .246
R. Bell - 1-3, HR (18), 3 RBI, R, BB, K, .306
L. Clay - 0-3, .216
M. Morrison - 0-3, .222
C. Gonzalez - 0-0, .091
SLAYERS' PITCHING
B. Morrow - 5.2 IP, 6 H, 2 K, 1 BB, 3 ER, 4.30
J. Carlson - 0.1 IP, 0 H, 0 K, 0 BB, 0 ER, 1.42
J. Frasor - 1 IP, 0 H, 0 K, 0 BB, 0 ER, 2.78
B. League - 2 IP, 1 H, 2 K, 0 BB, 1 ER, 4.45 (L, 3-1)
LIONS' PITCHING
W. Carey - 8 IP, 12 H, 0 K, 0 BB, 3 ER, 4.77 (W, 6-4)
C. Gonzalez - 1 IP, 1 H, 0 K, 0 BB, 0 ER, 4.78 (SV, 9)
Despite the loss, the Slayers totaled 13 hits in this ballgame, which is a positive sign. In fact, all of the Slayers' starting 9 got hits in this game. Hopefully they'll have much more to show for it next time around.
League Blowouts
INDIVIDUAL TITLE RACES
As the season starts to really hit its groove, we will take a look at how the individual title races are shaping up in the American League:
AVG
1. Alex Moyer - Hatchlings - .453
2. Simon Tracey - Hatchlings - .431
3. Mick Jones - Gorillas - .426
HR
1. Jared Young - Senators - 20
2. Zora Brown - Squirrels - 18
3. Tino Gonzalez - Gorillas - 18
RBI
1. Alex Moyer - Hatchlings - 97
2. Zora Brown - Squirrels - 96
3. Simon Tracey - Hatchlings - 83
SB
1. Milo Otis - Crawdads - 23
2. Kenneth Stewart - Gorillas - 19
3. Kazuo Shinobi - Rhinos - 18
ERA
1. Jameel Cook - Hatchlings - 1.00
2. James Settle - Heroes - 1.72
3. Taylor Thorpe - Angels - 2.52
W
1. Jameel Cook - Hatchlings - 10
2. Curtis Deardorff - Flash - 9
3. Jay Peters - Rhinos - 8
K
1. Jameel Cook - Hatchlings - 116
2. Vincent Reid - Heroes - 108
3. Jeff Sanchez - Malamutes - 97
SV
1. Donny Alvarez - Squirrels - 15
2. Luis Garza - Sheriffs - 14
3. Aaron Kessler - Heroes - 13
Now, you may notice one player on these charts who sticks out to you, and that is Simon Tracey. "Why is he not on the Felines anymore?" one (who either has a very, very good memory or was already reading through this log) might ask. Well, the Felines traded him to the Hatchlings earlier today for relief pitcher Omar "Spider" Ibarra (97 TOP SPD, B CTRL, E STAM, 2SFB 2, DCB 5, CCHG 4, SNK 4). A quick glance at Ibarra's stats shows he has a 6.29 ERA in 24.1 innings pitched.
So yeah, I think we know who got the better end of that deal.
long-ass update comin' your way
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

6-4-08

Sacramento Slayers 2 - New Orleans Lions 3

SUMMARY: A very rare sight indeed, as the Slayers drop two consecutive games to the Lions. Another rarity was the series loss that resulted from this game. As you can guess from the score, runs came at a premium today. The first run wasn't scored until the top of the 5th, when Lions third baseman singled home a run to make it a 1-0 game. However, in the bottom of the 6th, Jose Bautista would crush a double to center field that would score Guillermo Molina from second, tying the game up at 1. The Lions would regain the lead in the top of the 8th inning, when first baseman Phillip Lopez hit a sac fly to Adam Jones, giving the Lions a 2-1 lead. In the bottom of the 9th, Lions closer Christopher Gonzalez, who was in pursuit of his 10th save, served up a dinger to the first batter he faced, who was none other than Bautista. It was his 26th home run on the year, and it tied the game up at 2. Gonzalez worked through the inning, which meant the fans at Panpaka Park were treated to some free baseball. Both bullpens would shut the offenses down until the top of the 13th inning, when closer Brian Wilson, in the middle of his 3rd inning of work, gave up the decisive run via solo homer to Lopez. It resulted in his first loss of the season. Speaking of firsts, Lions starter Jailen Rodriguez entered in relief during the bottom of the 13th inning and got a first pitch groundout to record his first save of the season.

This loss stung even more than it should have, as the second-place Las Vegas Gamblers won their game. However, the other 3 NL West teams did lose.

League Blowouts
Gamblers outmatch Sting 23-4
Gorillas beat Rhinos 23-5
Angels triumph over Soldiers 17-0

PLAYER IMPROVEMENTS
Jesse Carlson's CCHG increased from level 2 to level 3.

TRANSACTION NOTICES
The Dragons have agreed to send SP Mickey Belmont (4-4, 6.41; 97 TOP SPD, C CTRL, A STAM, H-SLD 4, DCB 6, CCHG 3) to the Patriots in exchange for CF Lucius Hackett (.239, 7 HR, 38 RBI; C CON, B PWR, B RUN SPD, B ARM STR, C FLD, C E RES). Scouts feel this trade benefits the Patriots, as Belmont instantly becomes their best pitcher while Hackett might have to be relegated to the bench, as current Dragons CF Arthur Haywood is currently doing much better at the dish (.346, 10 HR, 50 RBI).
