Angels rookie Tyler Munhall took the mound for them today, facing off against Charlie Huff. The scoring started quickly as Raul Alcarez and Matt McCarthy each hit two-run homers in the first, and Huff got hit around in the second loading the bases with no outs but managing to escape unscathed.

Through four innings, the score was 4-3 Angels, and Huff was clearly out of gas after surrendering eleven hits. I sent Paul Casey out, but he served up a leadoff triple and an RBI single immediately. The next batter hit a sure-fire double play ball to shortstop, but Steve Bernard flubbed the toss from Medrano, and both runners were safe. They each would come around to score, extending the Los Angeles lead to 7-3.

In the 6th, we picked up a run on a Matt McCarthy solo shot, his second of the day. Then, in the 7th, as Brian Bridges held the Angels' offense down, back-to-back doubles from Marcus McElroy and Juan Hernandez gave us another. Matt McCarthy led off the 8th with another home run, his third of the day, and suddenly we were back within one, the score 7-6.

Viet Trieu pitched a scoreless 9th, giving us an opportunity to score one to tie or two to win against Angels closer Francisco Rodriguez. Unfortunately, Donnie Wilde and Steve Bernard both popped out, and pinch hitter Danny Millwood struck out after a nine pitch battle.

Final Score:
Los Angeles Angels - 7
Honolulu Gunmen - 6

The Dolphins had much better luck today, destroying the Athletics 15 to 1. This means we'll be tied with them going into game 162. The stress is starting to get to me...

Also, McCarthy only needs 8 homers next game to set a new record

Today's game started inauspiciously, as an early rally saw the Angels pick up three runs on five hits in just the first inning off Akinori Otsuka.

Fortunately for us, things started to turn around shortly thereafter, as the Dolphins' final score flashed on the scoreboard:

Sacramento Dolphins - 3
Oakland Athletics - 5

This meant that, worse case scenario, we would be heading to a one game playoff to decide the AL West winner. As if to celebrate this news, Matt McCarthy singled home Marcus McElroy to cut the Los Angeles lead to two. Otsuka managed to settle down in the second, recording a 1-2-3 inning, and Patrick Warr homered in the bottom half to make it a 3-2 game.

Otsuka seemed poised to cruise through another inning after getting two outs in the third, but Garret Anderson hit a two out home run. That was followed up in the fourth by another rally, with two singles and a Donnie Wilde error giving the Angels their fifth run.

Seemingly trying to will his way into the postseason, McCarthy hit a monstrous home run in the bottom of the fourth, cutting the lead to 5-3. Otsuka worked a clean fifth, and Viet Trieu a clean sixth, paving the way for Derek Wayne to drive home Matt McCarthy in the bottom of the sixth to make it a 5-4 game.

Adam Wilson served up a solo shot to Howie Kendrick and then two singles in the top of the eighth, forcing me to bring in Mike Colyer. Colyer shut the door on the Angels rally, but we were unable to muster anything against the back end of the Angels 'pen, with Francisco Rodriguez picking up the save.

Final Score:
Los Angeles Angels - 6
Honolulu Gunmen - 4

Box Score
Win: Kelvim Escobar (13-13)
Save: Francisco Rodriguez (34)
Loss: Akinori Otsuka (13-8)
HR: Matt McCarthy (67), Patrick Warr (26), Garret Anderson (16), Howie Kendrick (17)

J. Medrano - 1-4, .298
M. McElroy - 0-4, R, .260
J. Hernandez - 1-4, .272
M. McCarthy - 2-4, HR, 2 RBI, 2 R, .297
D. Wayne - 1-4, RBI, .314
P. Warr - 2-4, HR, RBI, R, .244
D. Wilde - 0-4, E, .266
S. Bernard - 1-3, .269
C. Raines - 0-3, K, .224

A. Otsuka (L) - 5 IP, 9 H, 5 R, 4 ER, 5 K, 3.62
V. Trieu - 1.1 IP, 3 H, 0 ER, K, 2.57
J. Hampson - 0.1 IP, 0 H, 0 ER, 4.00
A. Wilson - 0.1 IP, 3 H, ER, 2.57

The stage was officially set for an epic showdown at Rainbow Beach Stadium. The Dolphins had flown in on October 1st, and the game was slated for a 2:05 afternoon start in order to accommodate east coast viewers, as the game was being broadcast on MLB Network.

I sat at my desk, eating some pasta from a local Italian joint, although trying to keep food down as my stomach performed back flips was proving to be difficult. I set the Styrofoam container down and leaned back in my chair. Thoughts of the game were pushed aside by thoughts of my past.

How did I get here?

Not sure exactly what I meant by "here," I thought back to my college self, a bright-eyed 20-year old, naive but determined to become a major league General Manager. I thought of my first gig with the Diamondbacks, and how the pressures of that job nearly broke me. I thought of my marriage, and... of her.

I thought of Preston, and a long suppressed wave of guilt washed over me. I thought of who he was back then - brash but thoughtful, kind, energetic... trusting - a true friend. I then vocalized something that had long been buried in the back of my mind.

"It's my fault."

Fourteen years later, that was the first time I had ever admitted that what I did was wrong to even myself. That I wasn't justified. That I betrayed a friend. I hadn't even been able to say it to myself, let alone to him. The pressure in my chest built up until it felt as if I was going to explode.

How had I suppressed these emotions for so long? I had always considered myself the realist of the two of us, and I simply did the rational thing, the realistic thing. I had maintained for over a decade that it hadn't been my fault, but it was. It so plainly was. And I never even *(censored)* apologized.

"Damn it!" I slammed my fist on the desk, cursing myself. How had I let this charade continue for so long? I let my face fall into my hands.

"Um, Matty?"

I became suddenly aware of the presence of someone in the doorway. It could only be one person.

"Oh, Claire. Hey."
"Are you all right?"
"Yeah, no, I'm fine, I'm just nervous about the game is all."
"Oh, okay, because you looked pretty upset." She paused. "Sorry for not knocking."

In the ten months we had worked together, Claire had never once apologized for intruding. I couldn't help but let out a small chuckle.

"Really? You're apologizing for not knocking?"
She smiled. "Hey, there's a first time for everything."
I shook my head as I smiled.

"You know, Claire, I lied. I'm not fine."
Claire seemed a bit taken aback. We were friendly, but... well, she clearly was not accustomed to me confiding in her. I saved her the trouble of trying to find something to say by speaking first.
"Have I ever told you how Preston and I know each other? Before this season, I mean."
She looked up and to the left. "You went to college together, didn't you?
I nodded. "Yeah, we did. And we were best friends."
She laughed for a moment before realizing I was serious. "Wait, really?" I nodded. "But he's... I mean, he's not really the kind of guy I'd think you'd be hanging out with."
"That's true now but, he was different back then."
"Different how?"
"He was... a great guy. And... the way he is now, this hyper-competitive, self-centered, arrogant... well, anyway, the point is that he changed and it was my fault.

Claire looked shocked. "Your fault?" I nodded. "What does that mean?" I gestured to the chair opposite my desk.

"Sit down. It's kind of a long story."

"This is it, Matty. Can you believe it? We're actually here."

Preston and I walked stride for stride into Bank One Ballpark in downtown Phoenix. It was only 75 degrees, but the dew had already evaporated in the dry desert air and the temperature was quickly rising. Sweat stains developed in my armpits but more out of nerves than anything else.

It was our first day on the job as highly prestigious interns for the Arizona Diamondbacks. Preston and I had both applied and sent letters directly to Rodrick Reilly, who had responded personally welcoming us aboard. We hadn't seen him since the '98 Winter Meetings, but he remembered us both very clearly and was "thrilled" for us to join the team.

"I don't even know what to think right now. My head is spinning," I admitted.
"Relax, dude, we're probably just going to be getting coffee and shit," Preston replied.
"Yeah, well, I don't want to just be getting coffee."
"Me neither, but with a little eavesdropping, and a little interjection, we'll be making names for ourselves in no time."

Preston thought for a moment.

"Hell, I'd say we've already made names for ourselves. The owner himself gave us these jobs."
"I feel like that just puts more pressure on us."
"You worry too much."

Suddenly, Preston stopped walking.

"What?" I asked.
"Where are we supposed to go?"

I looked around. We were at the front gate to the stadium, which was obviously locked. I guess neither of us had really thought of any other way to get inside.

"There has to be an office entrance somewhere," I thought aloud. "But where?"
"Shit, we're going to be late," noted Preston, glancing at his watch before looking around frantically.
"And you said I worry too much."

We started to walk counter-clockwise around the stadium, looking for... a door, I guess. We had been walking for no more than ten minutes when we heard a familiar voice.

"Gentlemen! This way."

Preston and I both turned to see Rodrick Reilly himself standing, holding a door open with his foot and waving. A door we had apparently walked right past. Preston immediately began to schmooze.

"Mr. Reilly, sir, it's great to see you!" he exclaimed, extending his hand to the older man.
"Likewise, Mr. Greene. And Mr. Weaver, you're looking well."
I wiped my palm on my pant leg before reaching out to shake his hand. "Uh, likewise. Mr... sir."

Reilly laughed heartily.

"Come on in, don't be shy," he said, gesturing for us to walk in ahead of us. We walked inside.
"The team is on its way to Milwaukee now--still weird to me that they're in the National League--but they'll be back in town this weekend. In the mean time, I'd like to get you two set up in your office.

Preston and I looked at each other with a bit of confusion.

"Office?" he asked. Reilly laughed.
"I use the term loosely. But it could certainly be worse.

We turned a corner and Reilly called the elevator. Preston spoke up again as we waited.

"So who will we be getting coffee for?"
Reilly turned. "Coffee? Oh, no. You two will be working directly under Tom Gates."
The disbelief on our faces was clear. "Tom Gates?" I asked. "General Manager Tom Gates?"
"That's the one," said Reilly. Neither of us could think of anything to say as we stepped onto the elevator. "Remind me again what you two are studying in school?"

"Business," said Preston quickly. "With an emphasis in sports management."
"And you?" Reilly asked me.
"I'm double majoring in economics and statistics."

Reilly turned to look directly at us, creating a slight breach of elevator etiquette. "I like you two. Your resumés are outstanding, you're bright, hardworking, and driven, and I think you both bring something unique to the table. For that reason, I want you two in a position to make a difference here with the organization. As Tom Gates' personal assistants for baseball and business operations. And coffee too, sometimes," he added with a wink.

We were so entranced by this opportunity that we almost didn't notice Reilly had come to a stop. I nearly bumped into him.

"Well, here we are."

Two desks sat on opposite sides of a room, the door to Gates' office in the middle of the rear wall. Nameplates for each of us sat on the desks, mine on the right and Preston's on the left. We each had a desktop computer and a folding chair.

"Make yourselves at home, gentlemen. We've got a great summer ahead of us." Reilly turned and went back down the hallway. Preston put his arm around me and smiled.

"Welcome home, Matty."

"Here's your coffee, sir."

I handed Tom Gates his morning latte -- skim milk, no cream, no sugar -- and he mumbled a thank you as he stared intently at some papers on his desk. We were almost three months into the job, and Gates had barely said a word to us. It wasn't all bad -- we'd been able to eavesdrop on some high-level conversations and talk baseball with a lot of important people -- but the "working directly under the GM" thing had bee kind of a bust. I figured he was busy as usual and turned to leave without another word.

"Wait, Matthew," Gates called to me as I was leaving. I turned.
*(censored)*, did I mess up the coffee again? It was cream and no sugar. Or was it sugar and no cream? God damn it, this is why Preston does this shit.
"Y-yes, Mr. Gates?" I choked out.
"Take a look at this, will you?"

He handed me a piece of paper. On it were two pitchers' information, with the names blacked out and replaced with "Player A" and "Player B," respectively.

Quote:
Player A: 30 yrs old, 5-3, 95.0 IP, 73 H, 32 ER, 48 BB, 94 K, 7 HRA, 3.03 ERA
Player B: 33 yrs old, 6-6, 112.2 IP, 110 H, 49 ER, 32 BB, 96 K, 17 HRA, 3.91 ERA

"Which one would you rather have?"

I knew exactly why he was doing this. The team had been looking to bolster its pitching staff for a while now. We were 5-6 since the All-Star break, one game up in the division, and in the midst of a lengthy road trip. Randy Johnson was pitching at Cy Young levels, but outside of him and Brian Anderson, the rest of the starting five was mediocre at best, and Omar Daal (2-10 with a 7.22 ERA) at worst. I figured Gates had offers on the table and was debating which one to take. My heart raced at the thought of him seeking my advice.

"To be honest, sir, it's impossible make a decision from this information," I said honestly.
Gates raised his eyebrows. "Why's that?" he asked.
"Well, for one thing, I see that pitcher A has only given up seven home runs in almost a hundred innings. Those are great numbers, but I need to know if its something he can sustain. I'd need to see film, his past numbers, batted ball data for this year, to see if that's something he can do consistently or if he's just been lucky.

Gates just stared at me; I couldn't tell if he was intrigued or pissed.

"Uh, as for player B... his K/BB ratio is much better, but he's given up a lot of home runs. This could be a problem with location or movement, but it could also be an anomaly. Over half a season, these numbers don't mean a whole lot on their own. It's too small a sample size."

Gates extended his hand, motioning for me to return the paper. I handed it to him, my hands shaking.

"You know something?" he asked. "You're the first goddamn person to tell me anything of value about this," he said, holding up the paper.

I stood, slackjawed, unable to say anything.

"I have a deal in place with the Philadelphia Phillies. Omar Daal, Nelson Figueroa, Travis Lee, and Vicente Padilla for one of these two pitchers, Robert Person or Curt Schilling. Philadelphia wants to know today. They -- the scouts, I mean -- all want Person. 'Schilling's over the hill, Tom, he's 33.' But I just don't see it that way. But who am I to go against the majority?" He was clearly agonizing over the decision.

"Are you asking my opinion, sir?" I asked.
"Please," he replied, motioning for me to continue.
"Schilling's best days may not be behind of him. He has great control, excellent peripherals, his stuff is still very good. He'd provide a significant boost to our rotation."
"And Person?"
"Injury prone, bad mechanics, wild... he relies too much on his stuff. He'll be out of the league by 2003."

Gates nodded and looked back at his desk.

"Thank you, Matthew. You've given me a lot to think about."
"You're welcome, sir."

I walked out of his office, my heart racing.

Holy shit.
