October 27th, 2014

It was one day after the Mets completed their sweep of the Yankees in the 2014 World Series, completing one of the most miraculous turnarounds baseball has ever seen. They went just 71-91 in 2013, but managed to squeeze into a wild card spot at 89-73 this season, defeating the NL-leading Cardinals (102-60) in five games and the Colorado Rockies (95-67) in six before crushing Yankee fan's hopes of a three-peat (the Yanks were champs in 2012 and 2013) in the second subway series of the 21st century.

I was scheduled for another meeting with Greene and the commissioner on the 28th, but I needed to fly out to NYC for it as they couldn't keep meeting 30 minutes from my apartment. I headed to the airport in a navy blue suit and red tie I had bought in the past week. I'm not sure why, but the combination just felt Wright.

After getting through security and all that, I settled into a waiting area at around 2:00 PM. There weren't a ton of people at the airport, given that it was a Monday afternoon in October, but a middle-aged man sat next to me. I was a little weirded out, seeing as there were a ton of open seats, but I didn't want to move away and seem rude. After about one minute of awkward silence, during which I read Sports Illustrated, he spoke.

"Excuse me, are you Matt Weaver?" he asked. I was surprised by this question.
"Uh, I-" I stammered, "I think you have the wrong guy."
"Oh," he said back. "Sorry."
I went back to my magazine.
"Are you sure?" the man asked.
I wasn't sure how I wanted to respond, but eventually decided to tell him the truth. "Okay, yeah, I'm Matt Weaver," I admitted.
"Really?"
I nodded.
"Oh."
We fell silent for a while. I sort of turned away from him, but eventually started up again.
"Hey, I heard about your new job as the GM for the new team in Hawaii," he informed me.
"Oh, really?"
"Yeah," he said.
More silence.
"Flight 29 to Boston is now boarding," came a voice over the intercom.
"That's my flight," he told me.
I waved to him uncomfortably.
After he gathered his bags, he leaned in towards me.
"Hey, best of luck in Hawaii, Mr. Weaver," he told me.
I looked up at him, slightly shocked.
"Thanks," I said with a slight smile. He gave me a wave and left for his flight. In 20 minutes, I was doing the same.

October 28th, 2014

The meeting was to be held at noon, but traffic was so horrible that I didn't manage to show up until 12:30, and I wasn't even the last to arrive, as Porter rolled in just a few minutes before 1:00. The owner of the Gunmen was absent as usual.

Once we got started, Mason said he had some unfortunate news.
"What do you mean? What kind of news?" Preston asked.
"Well," Mason began, "I was unable to sell the other owners on allowing your two teams to participate in Free Agency."
"You've got to be kidding me," Preston exclaimed, clearly upset. "What do you mean you were 'unable to sell' it?"
"They wouldn't go for it," Mason said sheepishly.
"So? You're the commissioner of baseball!"
"Not yet, Mr. Greene, and I don't need to get off on the wrong foot with 30 organizations. And by 'Free Agency', I only mean class A and B free agents. Anyone else is fair game."
Preston groaned loudly.
"Also, no trading until Opening Day," Mason added.
"What?!" Preston shouted in disbelief.
"So all we can do is sign minor leaguers?" I asked.
"Correct."
This wasn't good.
"Oh well," started Preston, "at least we'll be kept from doing anything like trading away our aces."
I glared at him, but he kept looking straight ahead.
Mason could clearly sense tension. "So," he began, "I take it you both have contacted all your players?"
(Whaaaaaaaaa?)
"Of course," stated Preston.
"Mr. Weaver? Are you all right?" asked Mason. My face had reddened and I was sweating a bit.
"Er, yes sir," I answered, "I, uh, I'll contact them starting tomorrow- no, tonight!"
Preston mumbled something.
"You haven't done that yet?" Mason asked.
"Um, I wasn't really sure I was supposed to..."
"Figures," Preston grumbled.
"No problem, just get it done soon," Mason instructed.
"Absolutely!"

As soon as I returned to my hotel room, I began calling players. John Mason had supplied me with a list that included their contact information. I started with my first round pick, Jose Medrano.

*Ring ring*
"Hola?"
(Uh oh, Spanish.)
I tried to remember what I could from elementary school.
"Uh, est-ce que tu parles au anglais?" I asked.
"...Que?"
(Oh, wait, that's French.)
"Uh... uh..." I stammered. Why did I take French in high school?
Suddenly, I heard a voice in the background. "Julio! Que está en el teléfono?"
"Creo que él está hablando Inglés," said the person on the phone.
There was some static, and then another voice came.
"Hello?" it said. There was a slight accent, but at least he was speaking English.
"Hello! I'm calling for Jose Medrano," I stated.
"Oh, is this about the draft?" he asked, a slight inflection in his voice.
"Yep!"
"Oh, thank goodness! We were supposed to get a call weeks ago, I was starting to worry."
(Eh...)
"Well, I'm calling to tell you you've been drafted by the Honolulu Gunmen. I'm Matt Weaver, their GM."
"Oh, thank you!" he was remarkably polite for such an incredible player. "Is that all?" I told him yes, and he hung up.
(One down, 24 to go...)

My next call was to my second round pick, Matt McCarthy.
"Hello?"
"Hi, I'm calling for Matt McCarthy?"
"Speaking."
"I'm Matt Weaver, General Manager of the Honolulu Gunmen. I'm calling to inform you that we've selected you in the expansion draft."
There was a brief pause, and then a response. "What round?" He asked.
"Uh..." I said, taken aback by the question, "second."
Silence.
"...Are you still there?" I asked him.
"I'm thinking."
(...)
"I suppose that's acceptable," he eventually decided.
"Um, good. That's all then."
*click*
(Thank goodness I'm not managing...)

Sticking with the order I'd been using, I then called third-rounder, starting pitcher Charlie Huff.
"Huff household, Johnathan speaking!" a child's voice answered.
(How cute!)
"Hello, is Charlie there?"
"Charlie!" yelled the child.
After the phone was passed, an older voice spoke.
"Charlie speaking," it said.
(Geez, must be a formal household...)
"Hi Charlie, this is Matt Weaver, GM of the new expansion team, the Honolulu Gunmen."
"Hello, sir."
"I'm calling to inform you we have selected you in the third round of the expansion draft."
"Really? That's great! Thank you, sir! I won't let you down!"
"I'm sure you won't, Charlie."

Next up was Brendan Bikowski. I told him we'd drafted him and he would be joining the team.
"That's great news!"
"Congratulations!"
"Hey, um, Mr. Weaver?" he said quietly.
"What is it?"
"Could you, um, make sure there's plenty of Icy Hot?"
(That's kind of weird... I hope he doesn't have some sort of muscle problem.)
"That shouldn't be a problem, Brendan."
"Oh, good! And, also, one more thing..."
"Yes?"
"Um, uh, could you, um, make sure there's um... clown makeup?
"What?"
*click*

My next call was to pitcher Akinori Otsuka, a junkballer from Japan.
"Moshi moshi," a woman's voice answered.
(Uh oh, another foreign language.)
"Um, is Akinori there? Akinori Otsuka?" I don't think she spoke english, but I guess she recognized the name, because soon a new person was on the phone.
"Hello?" said a man with a thick Japanese accent. I remember reading that Akinori had only moved to the US in the past year, so it made sense. I explained his spot on the team, and he expressed his gratitude.

I then called Juan Hernandez, and found out he didn't speak english. With the help of Google Translate, I managed to get through the conversation, but I would need a more reliable method of communication throughout the season.

After calling Derek Wayne, Marcus McElroy, Donnie Wilde, and Johnny Rivera, I decided to call it a day. I would start again in the morning.

October 29th, 2014

The next morning, I set out to calling more players. Most of the calls were fairly uneventful, but a few were interesting:

"Hello?" A woman's voice answered.
"Um, hi, I'm looking for Rick Allen. Are you his wife?"
Laughter.
"I'm his mother, boy!"
"Oh, sorry..." I apologized. "Wait, he still lives at home?"
"Well, he's only 19! And he's been waiting for ages for this silly baseball coach man to call him. Something about a draft or something. Oh, he's been so worried about it lately, baseball must be really important to him."
"Um, ma'am?"
"I really hope that man will call soon. It's very unprofessional of him to be so late, don't you think, mister?"
"See, that's the thing-"
"When he does finally call, oh I'm going to give him a piece of my mind! I just can't stand to seem my little Ricky worry so much. Like this one time, when he was sixteen and wasn't sure if he was going to make the high school ball team? He didn't sleep for days! It's silly how worked up he gets over a little game, I've tried to get him to quit several times..."
"Mrs. Allen, I-"
"I've never really understood sports, it's all just so silly, don't you think? Oh, I just can't stand when little Ricky gets hurt-"
A voice came from the background. "Mom! Who's on the phone?"
"Oh, I never did get his name I guess," she said. "What is your name?"
"Matt Weaver. GM of-"
"His name is Matt! Is that one of your little baseball friends?!" she shouted.
"Matt Weaver?!" the other voice shouted.
"That's the one!"
"Give me the phone!"
"H-hello?"
"Hi, is this Rick?"
"Yes!"
"I'm Matt Weaver, GM of the Honolulu Gunmen."
"Are you calling for the reason I think your are?"
"If you think that reason is that you've been selected, yes!"
"Yes! Thank you so much, sir! You won't regret this!"
"Not a problem!"
"Oh, and uh..." he said quietly, "sorry about my mother. She's a bit... talkative."
"I noticed."
"Yeah... I'll see you in the spring, Mr. Weaver!"
"Bye!"

A few calls later, I was talking to reliever Viet Trieu.
"Helllooooo."
"Hello, is this Viet?"
"It could be," came the reply, "then again it could be not."
(What...)
"...Who else would it be?"
"One of my many, MANY cousins."
(What's this guy's deal?
"Um, well, is this Viet Trieu or not?"
"Is Kenneth Faried Manimal Rebounder?"
"What?"
"Is Carlos Gonzalez Huge Superstar in CO?"
"Um, maybe?"
"IS AJ SEDUCTIVE IN BLUE LATEX?!?!"
"Listen, if you're not Viet just tell me!"
"Hey man," he said calmly, "u biased against aisans?"
"What? What the hell is an aisan?"
"This is Viet Trieu, yes."
(Finally...)
"I'm calling because you've been drafted by the Honolulu Gunmen in the expansion draft."
"Excellent."
*click*
(Thank goodness that's over with...)

Eventually, I came to my last call, one to a young second baseman named Matt MacKenzie.
"Hello?"
"Hi, this is Matt Weaver-"
"I like that name."
"Um, okay... anyway, I'm the new GM for the Honolulu Gunmen and I'm calling to tell you that-"
"Hold on, I'm listening to Maps & Atlases!"
"...Who?"
"It's this great band. You've probably never heard of them."
"I haven't."
"That doesn't surprise me."
"So, I'm calling because-"
"Wait! "26 is Dancier than 4" just came on!"
"What? That doesn't even make sense..."
"Ah, sorry, I'll pause it for you. So, why are you calling?"
"Because-"
"Oh, man, have you ever heard of Emma Stone?"
"...Yeah, why?"
"She is so hot."
(...)
"So, back to your reason for calling."
I told him.
"YEEEEEEAH!!!!" he shouted.
"So, if you don't have any questions-"
"Actually, there's one thing. Do games get done by around 10:30? Because that's my bedtime."
"Um, usually, I guess they would be done by then."
"Great. I'll talk to you later."
"Um, yeah..."
*click*

(Whew, finally done with that...)

You mean the conversations with the players?

Yeah, I enjoyed writing them, but they took up a lot of space and were taking a lot of time, so I ended it.

Plus, I was running out of ideas for personality quirks.

Awesome.

I am disappointed at the lack of Tim Tebow being young QB, however.
