March 27, 2012 *Woo! Woo! Woo! Woo!* Robert Tomlinson was jolted from his sleep by the sound of his cell phone going off. "It's freakin' 2 in the morning, why in the world does anyone need to talk to me now?" Rubbing the crustiness from his eyes, he answered the call groggily: "Hello?" "Hello, is this Robert Tomlinson?" said the voice on the other line, a voice he did not recognize. "Look, whoever you are, I'm not capable of giving donations right now, thank you." And he hung up, and started back upstairs to bed. Not 10 seconds later, the same Woo sound went off again. He picked up the phone, and heard that same voice on the line. "Robert, listen to me. This is Steven Zimmermann, the owner of the Vancouver Mendenhals," said the mysterious voice. Robert didn't know what to say. Steven Zimmermann? Wasn't he a player he used to have on a baseball sim game he once played? "On behalf of, well, myself, we would like you to be the GM of this expansion MLB franchise," said Steven. Robert paused as he let those words sink in. GM? MLB Franchise? Expansion? On behalf of himself? Something didn't seem right. He then replied, "Why are you asking me to be a GM of an MLB Franchise? I have no experience whatsoever, and then there's the fact I'm only 16!" Steven then replied with something that caught Robert off guard, "Remember that MLB 2K8 tournament you entered in a while back?" I entered a tournament?, Robert thought. He remembers a bit of lag during one of the games he played, which coincidentally, he pitched a perfect game with one of his created pitchers. "Well, you were so good in that tournament, that I think that you have a future in baseball," Steven finished. "So, you think that me, a 16-year old student who needs to get up in 3 hours to get ready for school, a guy who really is interested only in stats and broadcasting, can seriously run an MLB franchise?" Robert said, "You're crazy, man. Plus, I don't have the funds to fly out to Vancouver." "Listen, I already spoke to your parents yesterday," Steven replied, "and they are totally OK with all of this. Of course, they had the same reaction that you have right now, but they eventually warmed up to that idea. Whaddya say? 7 AM tomorrow morning?" Robert thought for a moment. Would he be willing to give up his hometown, which he knew like the back of his hand, his friendships, his girlfriend, his schooling, just for a shot at leading an MLB team to a World Series championship? "Eastern or Pacific time?" Robert replied. He was on his way to Vancouver. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Hope this isn't too long or boring. The rest of the opening will more than likely be coming tomorrow. |
