2 Years Later... March 30th, 2008 8:00 A.M. "Carlos, wake up!" De Ja Vu man. "I'm up man, I'm up." "We gotta get in our last day of practice before we head off to L.A. Just think about it man. In about a day we're going to be playing our first game against the team we grew up hating, the Dodgers for the team we love." "I know man, it's crazy. When we get there I wanna hit up Randy's Doughnuts. Those things looks good." "We can fantasize about food after we crush the Dodgers." *BRZZZ BRZZZ* "Hey hold on right quick White I'm getting a call from Sabean. *beep* Hello?" "Carlos my boy how are you?" "I'm doing good Mr. Sabean. What do I owe you this pleasure?" "I want you and Rex to come into my office. I've got something cool to show you." "That sounds good Mr. Sabean, we'll be there soon. *beep* White we're going to Mr. Sabean's office." "Why?" "He just said he had something cool to show us." "Then let's go." ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ "Hello Mr. Sabean!" I said as I walked into his office. "Carlos, Rex good to see you guys. You ready for tomorrow?" "I was born ready for a game against the Dodgers," White said. "That's what I like to hear. Take a seat, take a seat." We sat. "So as you know, I think of you boys as the future of our organization. I have high expectations of you guys." "Thank you Mr. Sabean," I said. "Now you guys know the Aaron Rowand and Randy Winn are your teammates as well as your competitors right?" "Yes sir." "Not anymore. Boys!" Three men walked into the room. I dropped my jaw. "Meet Adrian Gonzalez, Kevin Kouzmanoff, and Jody Gerut. They are your new teammates." "But how...?" "I traded Rowand, Winn, and Castilio, along with some money to pay for their contracts." "That's crazy Mr. Sabean." "Pleasure to meet you guys," Adrian said. "Pleasure to meet you guys too," I said to them. "And that's not all." Three more people walked into the room. I nearly fainted. "Meet Justin Verlander, Nate Robertson, and Bobby Seay." "How did you manage to get these guys? "Zito." "You mean Barry Zito?" "Right after that first lack-luster season I knew he was going to be trouble. The Tigers took him and look what it got us. They'll be flying with you guys to L.A. tonight." |

In all, you got Verlander, Robertson, Seay, Gonzalez, Kouzmanoff, and Gerut for Zito, Rowand, Winn, Castillo, and cash, right? |

He pitched like a seasoned vet against Dodger rookie Hiroki Kuroda who made his first big league start. He put of a great effort, but his offense simply could not produce. The Giants had new faces appearing for the first time, a list that includes two first round draft picks in Carlos Richardson and Rex White as well as All-Stars Justin Verlander and Adrian Gonzalez. Gonzalez produced right off the bat, going 2 for 4 and knocking in the games only run. Rookies Carlos Richardson and Rex White appeared in their first ever big league game, but only went a combined 1 for 8, White getting the only and his first big league hit. Cain and Kuroda started out strong sending batters back into the dugout early and often, only allowing a handful of hits in the first couple of innings. The Giants had several chances to do some major damage, but could not come up in the clutch; that is until the 6th inning. Dave Roberts started off with a one out single, then swiping second with ease. After a Richardson ground-out, Adrian Gonzalez took an inside pitch to left and blooped one in to score Roberts. The Dodgers threatened in the bottom of the inning, getting Cain into a no out bases loaded situation. Cain stayed calm, cool, and collected, getting Andrew Jones into a 6-2-3 double play then getting Russell Martin to ground out to short. Cain was able to maintain a one run lead for eight strong innings before handing it over to Brian Wilson who sealed the deal for the first win of the season. "Good job on the hit." "Thanks man. It's okay man. 161 games to go before the playoffs." "I can't wait until tomorrow. I want to destroy the baseball. I think that I was just to aggressive." "I was too. I need to see more pitches tomorrow." "Ugh... Randy's?" "Randy's." |

Not only with the pitching, but with the risen from the dead bats. Manager Bruce Bochy has been suprised how a couple of draft picks and trades can reshape an entire team. "I mean you see this type of stuff all the type. Teams have made major trades but they don't pan out at times, but we have already seen some major contributors. A-Gon and Verlander are going to do what they do best and we are hoping the Richardson and White can pan out and become good tools for us." The new look players for the new look Giants have already gotten off to a great start. Richardson and White have picked up right where they left off in college. Gonzalez and Kouzmanoff have unleashed a pounding on the ball and Verlander is already getting it done. Verlander was able to work out of multiple jams during this game. He worked out of a bases loaded no out situation, as well as a no out 2nd and 3rd situation. The Giants will be going for the sweep when they face off against the Dodgers tomorrow in a night time thriller. "Hey man nice game," White said to me after we left the locker room. "You too man. It feels nice to get some hits. I thought that double was going to be a homer! It hit straight off the top of the wall." "I thought that was gone too! Right when you hit it I jumped out of the rail, but then I saw it hit the top then slowly cowarded back into the dugout." "Who's idea was the silent treatment?" "Who else but me. Just kidding it was Adrian. He was messing with you. Turns out he's really nice." "Seems like it. He has that classic smile. Speaking of which where is he? I didn't see him leave the locker room." "I don't know, I'll check out the parking lot." I exited the doors and looked around the players parking lot. I saw two large men, one of them looked to be Adrian. The other I couldn't make out. "I PUT YOU ON THIS TEAM FOR A REASON!" yelled the other man. "I WILL NOT DO THAT! I PLAY THIS GAME FOR A REASON, NO MATTER WHAT TEAM!" "EITHER YOU START FOLLOWING ORDERS OR YOU WON'T BE PLAYING ANYMORE! the man pulled out a small item. BRZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ. "AHHHHHHHHHHH!" said Adrian in pain. He fell to the ground. "Oh geez." I went back into the locker room and got White, then came right back out and ran to Adrian. "Adrian you okay man?" "Is he gone?" "I think so, but we better leave. I'll drive you back to the hotel." ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ "Who was that guy?" I said. "Padres owner. He put me on this team to sabatoge you guys, but I couldn't do that. I play this game to win and I want to form a bond with you guys, not destroy it." "Did he really mean it when he threatened to kill you?" I said. "I don't know. He has the money to do anything. I just better watch my back." "Hey we got you man," White said. "We don't want our teammates getting hurt, or in your case killed." "Thanks guys. I appreciate it." "Hey the night is a little young. Let us take you to our favorite restaurant." "Where would that be?" Me and White exchanged looks. He already knew. |
