Manager and GM Scott0530 weighs in on draft

Our top priority going into this draft was to solidify our defense at shortstop, and we were fortunate enough to be able to nab Maza at the top of the draft. He automatically upgrades our defense, and gives us a better offensive option at the plate as well. Maza was a gold glover at the college leve and we see him as being a premier defender at this level in the not to distant future. (Don) Henson (F5/F77/E6/E7/D8/E6)will move from short and fill a need as a backup infielder.

We are always looking to add quality pitching, and it's even a bigger coupe for us since Veras is left handed, already throws 89, has good control and has a decent knuckle ball. Right now, Veras will stay in the minors but, he will be up probably around the all star break and work out of the pen.

Nice job with the draft. What is Maza's potential?

Dominic Maza looks really good, gold glove is just another pretty good thing to add onto D contact and D fielding abilities, walk is a simulation killer. But Julio looks good too.

Yeah, I needed a SS with some potential. Henson just couldn't throw anyone out from the hole, assuming he could get there, or turn double plays consistently. Love the gold glover ability, anyone know if that makes defensive stats increase faster?
Not really worried about 'Walk' since I don't sim games. But he is going to be good to.

4 stars I think.

BTW, I'm thinking of nominating this log into a log category in the MLBPPWORLD Awards. Are you good with that?

I'm pretty-sure it does not, though it might boost his ability to be in the right place at the right time, and maybe boost his error resistance a bit. I think the main benefit is that when simming, he will throw to the correct base, and not always throw for the lead runner when there's no chance.

I also think it increases flashy plays, such as flipping the ball to the second baseman with your shortstop when your shortstop is on the ground.

I agree, and actually just returned to this log to update my response for that! It would make sense for GG to automatically include "barehanded catch" for IF, but I don't know whether it does.

You don't automatically get Barehand Catch, if that's what you're asking, but I figure the ability to field barehanded is involved somehow in Gold Glover.

6/12: The Pelicans today have called up second round pick Julio Veras, who will work out of the Pelican pen as a middle reliever. To make room, Jacksonville has optioned Jose Rijo to AAA St. Augustine.

New York Mets (Aoyama 2-2) VS. Jacksonville Pelicans (Bouknight 3-0) 6/12

Jacksonville- It's a good thing this home stand for Jacksonville was a short on, because it is one they are going to want to forget. The Mets completed a three game sweep of the Pelicans last night, a game in which Jacksonville was in until the bullpen imploded and surrendered six runs over the final three innings of the game.
The teams traded first inning runs. The Mets getting a solo HR from Luis Castillo and Jacksonville and RBI single from Dan Johnson.
The Mets would take a short lead in the 5th. Jose Reyes singled and moved up on a fielders choice. David Wright would drive him in with an RBI single.
The Pelicans took the lead in the bottom of the inning. Don Henson and Dustin Huffman both singled followed by consecutive RBI singles from Eric Cressend, Johnson and Mike Sedlacek.
Then the wheals fell off. Brian Schneider led off the seventh with a double and Wright belted a 2R HR.
Beltran followed in the eighth with a solo HR, and Reyes and Castillo both added RBI singles.
The Pelicans did manage to put up a run in the bottom of the eight when Kirk Orie singled home a run.
Ryan Church would add the final New York run in the ninth with an RBI 2B.

Jacksonville Pelicans (Wesson 2-2 2.49) @ Pittsburgh Pirates (Maholm 4-5 4.17) 6/14

Pittsburgh- The Pelicans won their second straight last night in an unbelievable pitchers duel last night against Pittsburgh. Neither team had a base runner reach third base till the top of the eleventh. After singling to open the 11th, Jason Cerros moved to second on a sac bunt and scored on a Dustin Huffman RBI single.
The Pirates put two on with one out in the bottom of the inning, but closer Ken Merricks closed the door by getting consecutive strikeouts to end the game.
