Alaska Ice Wolves (0-0) @ New York Yankees (0-0)
Opening Day 2008

Yankees Need Just 2 Runs to Beat Ice Wolves
New York -- Szuminski kept kicking himself over giving up a home run to Jason Giambi. "It was a decent fastball that just caught too much of the plate" said catcher Fussell. "He knows that with our offense, that could mean the game." While it didn't affect the 2-0 Yankees win's outcome, it seemed to have an affect on the team, as Chien-Ming Wang and Mariano Rivera shut out the Ice Wolves despite 9 hits. The Yankees started with Robinson Cano getting an RBI single in the second, followed by Giambi hitting his home run in the 4th. "I still felt I pitched well" said Szuminski, who gave up 2 runs in 6 and 1/3 innings, while striking out 9. "Hopefully, our offense gives me some run support so that we can win the next game."

Final Score:
Ice Wolves: 0
Yankees: 2

Alaska Ice Wolves (0-1) @ New York Yankees (1-0)
April 3, 2008

Bonilla Blows Game, Ice Wolves Lose 2-1
New York-- Bonilla has been rumored to lose the Closer's job to Duff if his control problems continue. Yesterday showed he may not be ready. "I was giving them fastballs right over the plate" Bonilla said. "They're a very good lineup, top to bottom, and you just can't make mistakes." Bonilla wasted a great performance by Riley (7.2 IP, 1 ER, 13 SO), as well as the first run in Ice Wolves history. "We have no plans to" said manager Ronald Miller on whether Bonilla will lose his job to Duff. "It's just one game." Alex Rodriguez hit the only home run of the game in the 4th inning off Riley, but Sparks drove in Leon on a single to tie the game at 1 in the 7th. Derek Jeter, who started the series 0-7 with 7 SO, singled Damon home off Bonilla in the bottom of the 8th inning. "We made progress" Miller said. "one run is better than none."

Alaska Ice Wolves (0-2) @ Tampa Bay Rays (1-1)
April 4, 2008

Ice Wolves Conquer Rays to Win First Game in Team History
St. Petersburg-- The Ice Wolves had something to celebrate- the first win in team history. "It's a big boost to our morale," said Shortstop Christian, who won Player of the Game. "You're not expected to win many games as an expansion team." The win is the first in Ice Wolves history- a 7-5 win over the Tampa Bay Rays. Surprisingly, it was the offense that showed up this time, not so much with the pitching. Abraham and Edwin Jackson both looked liked they were going to pitch a pitcher's duel in the first four and a half innings, but Carl Crawford brought home Akinori Iwamura home on a double, and B.J. Upton followed with a two-run home run to left field, giving the Rays a 3-0 lead. "I told the team that we needed to get some offense, and that we are a good hitting team" said Team Captain Garrett House. "I told them them that we are better than 1 run in 22 innings." House kept his word singling off Jackson, followed by Arellano singling. Fussell and Leon followed with singles of their own, cutting the lead to 3-2. After two outs, Christian, who started the year in an 0-10 slump, came through with a 2 RBI double to give them a 4-3 lead. Things kept going for them offensively in the 6th, with Arellano and Leon getting one and two-run singles respectively, giving the Ice Wolves a 7-3 lead. The Ice Wolves ran into trouble in the bottom of the 6th, where the bases were loaded loaded with one out, and a run already in for the Rays. Pickler came on on and struck out Bartlett, but then Iwamura lined what looked like a bases-clearing double down the left field line, but Garrett House jumped and snatched the ball out of the air, ending the rally. "He works on it every day, and has gotten a lot better" said Ronald Miller on House's defense. The Rays tacked on one more run, but Halter finished them off with 2.1 innings of solid work. "Hopefully, this is the first win of many future Ice Wolves wins to come," Miller said.

Final Score:
Ice Wolves: 7
Rays: 5

WP- Pickler (1-0)| LP- E. Jackson (0-1)| SV- Halter (1)

Alaska Ice Wolves (1-2) @ Tampa Bay Rays (1-2)
April 5, 2008

Rays beat Ice Wolves 4-1
St. Petersburg-- It was a tough day to face Matt Garza and the Rays. "He's a tough, young pitcher" said manager Ronald Miller. "We need to hit with runners in scoring position if we're going to win." Garza pitched a complete game while only giving up 1 run, striking out seven to top off a successful first start in a Rays uniform. He had been acquired in a trade from the Twins with Jason Bartlett in the off-season. "We're a good, young team, and we feel we can win the core we're built around" said Garza. "This was a good start." Ice Wolves pitcher Gautreau had a poor debut, giving up 3 runs and being pulled after 3.1 innings. The scoring started in the bottom of the 2nd inning, when Cliff Floyd doubled, and Longoria singled him home. Iwamura and Crawford brought in two more runs to give the Rays a 3-0 lead. The three runs were all they needed, as Garza only gave up an RBI single to Fussell, but Crawford retaliated with his own RBI single, which would be the final run of a 4-1 game.

Final Score:
Ice Wolves: 1
Rays: 4

WP- Garza (1-0)| LP- Gautreau (0-1)| SV- None
HR: None

Gautreau: 3.1 IP, 9 H, 3 ER, 4 K

Sonnastine Shutsout Ice Wolves, K's 15
St. Petersburg-- Andy Sonnastine wants to forget one thing- 6-10 with an ERA of 5.55. Those are his 2007 numbers of a forgettable rookie campaign. "Yeah I want to forget about them" Sonnastine said about his numbers. "I am just coming in to this year focused on one thing- winning a World Series." Sonnastine took that huge leap forward, pitching a complete game shutout, allowing just two hits, while striking out 15 in a 3-0 Rays win. He also lost a perfect game when Sparks doubled with two outs in the 6th. "This is a game our offense definitely wants to forget" said Ronald Miller. "We need to get focused on our next series." The Rays got things started against Ice Wolves started Clippard in the bottom of the 3rd inning, where Carlos Pena and B.J. Upton drove in runs on RBI singles. Carlos Pena got another RBI single to finish off the scoring. "It's good to start over," said Sonnastine.

Ice Wolves excited to play at New Stadium
Anchorage-- The Alaska Ice Wolves have finally come to Alaska. "It's cold" was the quote from several different players on the team. The team has unveiled the opening of new Golden Apples Stadium in downtown Anchorage, right by the river. "It's a nice place for the team to be" said GM Power Pros 27 "Many players have bought lofts and apartments in downtown Anchorage, right by the stadium." The Stadium has the reputation as a hitter's ballpark, with short left and right field fences, medium left-center and right-center fences, and a deep center field great for doubles, triples, and even inside-the-park-home-runs. "We even get free Mott's Apple Juice" said Power Pros 27. The Stadium holds over 50,000 people. "There's a huge amusement park in Center Field" said Power Pros 27. "I think the fans and players are going to love it here." It's a great day to be a baseball fan in Alaska.

Ice Wolves Rally in 9th, But Come Up Short
Anchorage-- The fans of the Ice Wolves did not get to see a win in the first game at Golden Apples Stadium- but they did get to see a team with a bright future. A rally against Mariano Rivera of the Yankees in the 9th came short as the Yankees took the first game of a four-game set 3-2. "Even just getting a run against the greatest closer of all-time- well, it means something special" said manager Ronald Miller. The game began with a great pitcher's duel between Veras and Jeff Karstens. However, in the top of the fifth, A-Rod took Veras deep for his third home run of the year. Hideki Matsui got an RBI single in the 7th to end what was overall a good day for Veras. Fussell got to Brian Bruney in the bottom of the 7th with an RBI single, cutting the Yankees lead to 2-1. In the top of the 9th, the Yankees added what would be an important insurance run, when Jeter doubled off Halter, driving in a run to make it 3-1. With one out to go versus Mariano Rivera, the Ice Wolves rallied with a run off an RBI single by Sandberg, but Sparks grounded out to end the game. "I feel a bright future in the atmosphere" said one fan. Someday, we will look back on this as the start of a dynasty.

Pitching, Hitting Non-Existent for Ice Wolves
Anchorage-- The Ice Wolves need to regroup after they fell to the Yankees 7-1 at home. "It happens to every team, and we just have to regroup" said manager Ronald Miller. Szuminski fell at the hands at Chien-Ming Wang once again, after losing to him in a 2-0 loss on opening day. "He's a great pitcher, and has the offense to back him up," said Szuminski. The scoring began in the bottom of the first, when Garrett House doubled in Bouknight to give the Ice Wolves a 1-0 lead. That's all the run support Szuminski would get. After 5 scoreless innings, Jason Giambi singled A-Rod home (who was injured, but came back to the game), and Posada drove in 2 with a double to give the Yankees a 3-1 lead. Pickler came on and gave up two RBI singles, and Halter gave up a two-run single to A-Rod in the 9th, to end the scoring of a 7-1 Yankees win.

Duff Ruins Great Outing By Riley
Anchorage-- No one in the Ice Wolves clubhouse looked more visibly upset than Ice Wolves closer Duff. "When your handed the closer's job, you're expected to close out ballgames" Duff said. "Getting a blown save and a loss is not the closer's job." The loss ruined another great outing by Riley, who struck out 13 again for the second straight start. He leads the league in strikeouts with 26. "I'm not dissapointed that I didn't get the win" said Riley. "I'm just dissapointed that our team lost." The Ice Wolves jumped out to a 1-0 lead when Arellano got an RBI double off Mike Mussina. Arellano later extended the lead to 2-0 in the 6th for his 2nd RBI. The Ice Wolves looked poised for a win, but Riley started to show signs of being tired, giving up doubles to Cano and Matsui to close the lead to 2-1. With runners on 1st and 3rd, and 2 outs, Duff came on to get Derek Jeter out. He couldn't- Jeter smashed a double to tie the game at 2. In the top of the 9th, with Giambi on second after a Passed Ball by Fussell (his fourth of the year), Cano singled him home, giving the Yankees all they needed in a 3-2 win. "Nobody wants to drop 5 in a row" said Ronald Miller. "We need to pick it up."

Ice Wolves Do Nothing Right, Get Swept By Undefeated Yankees
Anchorage-- Abraham gave up 7 earned runs. Ruan had to throw 54 pitches out of the bullpen. Team Captain Garrett House went 0-4 with 4 strikeouts. The team made 3 errors. "It just seemed like a day we could do nothing right" said manager Ronald Miller after a 9-2 loss to complete the Yankees four-game sweep. This time, the Yankees jumped on the pitching early, with Giambi hitting an RBI single in the top of the first. The Yankees continued their rout on Abraham with 4 runs in the top of the third, finishing with two in the 5th to give them a 7-0 lead. However, in the bottom of the 5th, the Ice Wolves got two runs with two outs, including RBI singles by Bouknight and Tovar. Then came Team Captain Garrett House with runners on second and third (after a passed ball). He struck out. "That's not what I was expected to do in that situation" said House. "I didn't set the tone for the team, and it showed." House ended the day leading the MLB by four with 18 strikeouts. "The only reason he has been able to maintain an average of .278 is because of a BABIP of .555." said an Ice Wolves scout. "If he keeps striking out, his batting average will fall fast." Ruan came on and gave up 2 runs- although Bonilla was pitching with two outs when that happened. "We faced the best team in baseball" said Ronald Miller. "I've said it many times, but I'll say it again- we need to regroup."

Ice Wolves Lose in 16 Inning Thriller
Anchorage-- Duff couldn't believe he blew another game. "It's unacceptable" he said. "My offense is working their tails off out there, and I just come in and give up another crushing defeat." It is the Ice Wolves seventh loss in a row, after falling to the Orioles 7-5. Gautreau pitched a good game, giving up two earned runs (both came with Ruan pitching) to give the Orioles a 2-0 lead. Jay Payton later got an RBI single to increase the lead to 3-0. But the Ice Wolves weren't about to back down. Tovar got an RBI single in the bottom of the 6th to cut the lead th 3-1. In the bottom of the 7th, Sparks got an RBI single, Christian got an RBI double, and Bouknight got an RBI single to give the Ice Wolves a 4-3 lead. However, Ruan served up a 2-run home run to give the Orioles a 5-4 lead. "That was- disappointing" said manager Ronald Miller. Leon, however, got an RBI single in the bottom of the 8th to tie the game. The Ice Wolves had a few missed opportunities in extra innings, such as when Garrett House was caught stealing and a double play in the 11th. Duff came on in the 16th and wasted 6 great innings by Bonilla, giving up a 2 RBI single to Brian Roberts. The Ice Wolves couldn't mount a comeback against Fernando Cabrera, going down 1-2-3 in the bottom of the 16th to lose their 7th straight.
