*beep-beep-beep-beep*
I began slapping at the darkness, trying to locate where the stupid alarm was. Whilst groping for the snooze button, I mistakenly smacked the power button, shutting off my alarm.
"Great." I thought to myself, rolling out of bed.
The time was 6:00 a.m. and I could already hear the sounds of the Big Apple buzzing outside of my 7th floor apartment. After chowing down a few bowls of Frosted Flakes(they're grrrreat), I showered and changed into a pair of jeans and a NYY hoodie. Doing so put a smirk on my face. It felt good to work for the most hated team in sports, and assist in keeping them at the top, centered in the hate. I grabbed my worn Nike bookbag then(I've never been one for briefcases... too official) and headed for the nearest subway station, destined for Yankee Stadium. It was a bleak early December day, and I was glad I wore a hooded sweatshirt.

I arrived at my office at 7:43. It wasn't as much an office as it was a crowded room with desks crammed in and computers on them. Being an infielder coach, a lower level position, I was spared the luxury of having a nice office. I don't mind as much as others though. I just keep my head down and work instead of complain about how much better I could make the team if I were in charge, like others preferred to do. I was one of the first there, per usual. Some wouldn't even come in on days in the middle of winter, but I always liked to prepare myself as much as possible for the next season. I popped in a tape of us playing the Red Sox in a mid-season series. Cano had 3 errors that game, and I was determined to help him improve his glove for us this year. After looking at the errors, I could obviously tell he was pulling his head up too early, anticipating that he would field it cleanly. After the first error I think he was flustered, and that certainly wasn't a help.

I worked through the morning, stopping at 12:15 for lunch. I pulled out my PB&J sandwich, and began to munch on that while I checked my e-mail. As I ate, I received an e-mail, from one of the higher-ups. Upon opening it, I learned that I was in contention for a new position as head fielding coach with the Yankees! As the adrenaline pumped through my veins, I read on to find out that I had a first round of interviews next week, on December 12th, starting at 9:00 a.m. At the bottom, it read; Please reply to this e-mail informing us if you are interested and with any questions or concerns you may have. I immediately replied with a heartfelt thank you and a confident yes- I am interested in the position.

As December 12th approached, my anticipation for the interview began to climb higher and higher. On the 9th, 3 days before the interview, I received another e-mail. It was titled "Florida Job". I was very intrigued by this email, wondering what sort of baseball job there was in Florida. With the Rays? Marlins? I opened it, with my mind racing. The e-mail explained that there was an opening for a defensive coach on the Marlins. It turns out, the exact same position the Yankees were offering me.
"Well" I said to myself, since I was at home, alone. "This sure makes things a little more complicated."

Holler if you like this. 'Cuz I got a super cool plan to make this awesome. Provided that I retain the motivation to do it. It's gonna take quite a bit of story to set up the season though, just a warning.

Just not tonight.

I decided to stay in New York for my interviews, which were both on the 12th. I planned on Skyping with the Marlins, at the pre-arranged time of 3:00 p.m., plenty later than my NYY interview. My heart wanted to stay with the Yankees, but I decided to give both teams an equal chance.

----------
Later...

The Yankees interview went well, and I found myself surprisingly at ease. I knew who everyone in the room was, although I'd never really spoke with most of them. They seemed to like me, so I took that as a good sign. I also found myself enjoying the Marlins interview, and the head honchos there seemed nice. This really tore me inside, because I felt like the Marlins were like a new friend, begging for attention. And I still wanted to hang out with my old friend, the Yankees. I decided to wait and see if I got either job before I started worrying about that, and so I went to bed early.

December 18th, 2007 -- 10:32 p.m.

I lay in bed, contemplating just what the heck I was gonna do. I never anticipated getting both. I planned on just going with the one that hired me, not even imagining that both would... And now I really had to make a choice between the new friend and the old. Since they didn't need my decision until Christmas Eve, the 24th, I decided to put it off and see if I chanced upon a decision by then.\

December 24th, 2007 -- 9:31 a.m.

I decided to call the Marlins first, giving them the news. They handled it very professionally, and they said that they understood my decision. Wanting to stay where I was comfortable. Etc... I felt a little guilty, because I knew that they really liked me and wanted me for the job, but I wanted to stay with the Yankees.

Next I called the Yankees, and said that I wanted to stay in New York and take the promotion. They were shocked that I had decided to stay. Apparently they thought for sure that I would be heading to the Marlins, and did not see my decision coming. But boy, they had a shock for me.
