5/27/2038 It had been another extremely boring day on the office. I was just about ready to kill myself, legitimately, because my life had become so boring and dull since the death of my wife, Rachel. The team was doing terribly as usual and my job was in jeopardy. I had been one of the best scouts the MLB had ever had back in the late 10's and the early 20's. I brought in some of the best players that the Red Sox have had in the last 3 decades. I brought in the legendary Jim Anderson (.298 565 2034), Peter Conkel (213-165, 3.20), and Terrence Williams (567 Saves, 2.98). Even after all of those acquisitions that I was responsible for the Red Sox organization was thinking about firing me. I got home to my apartment and took some Advil for my back pain. I plopped down on the couch, the old green one that really needs to be replaced and turned on some Baseball Tonight. I saw that we were now 9 games back from the 4th place team, the Orioles, in the division. The Blue Jays were 18 games in front of us. The bright side for the team was that Richard Dickinson had a 7-2 record with a 2.08 ERA. His starts seemed to be the only time we would win games. After watching a bit of TV I walked down to Ron's Coffee Shop and bought a coffee and some cookies. I slurped down my coffee and inhaled my cookies and walked back to my apartment. When I got back I glanced at the lamp stand because I left the light on. Next to the lamp I saw my gun, loaded. I never bothered to research guns so I didn't know what my gun was called. After all, I had no interest in guns since the incident. |

My twin and I were born that day and were ready to rock and roll in our lives." 10/30/2013 "Yeah, the Red Sox won! Aren't you so happy John and Luke? The Red Sox won the World Series!" "Yeah, I'm so happy! I'm gonna work for the Red Sox one day!" I said. "Yeah, and I'll be playing for you when you're my GM!" Luke replied. "I can't wait for that day to come Luke!" "Yeah, it's gonna be awesome!" |

5/16/2019 I got to where I thought I had heard the gunshot and I saw Luke lying on the ground. I started to shed some tears and started yelling for someone to call an ambulance. All my yelling was too late though, he had already bled out from the stomach by the time the ambulance got there. They still rushed him back from the hospital for some unknown reason. When I got to the hospital, I saw Luke lying dead and his girlfriend, Jessica, and some other friends he and I had. All of us were crying, even Bruce, the catcher for the Minutemen, was crying. 5/31/2019 The funeral for Luke was held in our hometown of Port City, MA. I didn't really hear anything the pastor said about Luke as I was too busy grieving over the loss of the only sibling I had. When I got up to the podium to speak about my brother I couldn't really get anything out of my mouth. All I was doing was stuttering and stumbling over every single word and I couldn't think of anything to say about him. I came down from the podium to sit back down next to my parents after only being able to say, "L-l-Luke w-was the great-t-test brother I c-c-could ever have a-asked f-for." |

6/5/2038 I was sitting in the Baseball Palace, the place that was built in 2022 to run the MLB Draft in. Today was the day of the 2038 MLB Amateur Draft. "With the first pick of the 2038 MLB Draft, the Arizona Diamondbacks select: Right handed pitcher, Josh Mallett, from Military Prep Academy in Bismarck, North Dakota." After two more picks we were on the board. I wanted us to go with a RHP Miles Stratton whom I had fully scouted and was very impressed by him. But our eastern scout, Tyler Scott, a 23-year old, who our GM showed a huge amount of favoritism toward, wanted an outfielder, Billy Mako. "With the fourth pick of the 2038 MLB Draft, the Boston Red Sox select: RHP Miles Stratton, from Duke University." The GM, Ryan Quartman, whispered in my ear, "If he's not up here by 2042 you're gone Hilton." "Oh trust me Mr. Quartman, this is the best kid I've seen since Conkel back in 2024." "You better be right Hilton." |

7/25/2038 "Big news in the MLB! The Red Sox have just made a blockbuster trade with the Baltimore Orioles! The Red Sox will send prospects, Brody Harris, Aaron Dannemiller, and newly drafted Miles Stratton-" "That son of a bitch!" I threw the TV remote at the lamp stand and knocked off a vase, breaking as it hit the ground. "The Red Sox acquired aging veteran catcher Pete Ogden and shortstop Yu Nishi." "That's a *(censored)* terrible trade! What the hell were you thinking Ryan?" I proceeded to grab my cell phone and look at it and saw the message from Ryan. "Meet me at your office." It read. "Damn it Ryan, now I have to go all the way back to the office? Shit!" I met Ryan at my office, it looked odd as for some reason my name plate that clearly read 'John Hilton' was gone. "Where the hell is my nameplate Ryan?" "Why the *(censored)* do you care about that of all things?" "I want my damn nameplate back!" "Why do you care about a *(censored)* piece of shit nameplate? They cost 5 dollars!" "Give me my nameplate!" "You won't be needing it Hilton! You've been fired!" "What the hell? Why? And why the *(censored)* did you trade Stratton?" "He blew his arm out." "No he didn't, I'd have been the first one to know!" "Ok, fine, I was lying. He didn't blow his arm out. Just pack up your possessions and leave. And here's your *(censored)* nameplate." 7/25/2038 I walked back to my apartment from my old office, jobless, and I had no idea what to do. I grabbed the Advil that I had just gotten a refill on and then, I tried to kill myself. I had been out for 12 hours when my son, Gabe Byrnes, came in to my apartment since it was my week to have him. Gabe, who was now 17, tried to wake me up. "He must've been drinking, that slob!" Then he saw the empty medication bottle. "*(censored)*! He tried to kill himself!" He carried me down to his car, I was still unconscious, and drove me to the nearest hospital. I'm not sure how it happened but I was revived and placed on a recovery system called 'Celebrate Recovery.' I was also on a 10 month rehab course with a trainer. |

Suddenly I felt a rush of adrenaline coming on and I was able to walk the last 6 steps but then I collapsed. Tessa was so proud of me, and I was proud as well. "Hey, uh, Tessa." "Yes, John?" "Do y-you w-wanna go to dinner with me tonight? I'll buy." I said with a smirk on my face. "I'll see if I can make it, I might be working overtime tonight. I'll text you John." "Okay Tessa, see you later maybe." |
