I've eaten at Chipotle. My uncle sells milk to them though. But they're basically against everything in modern farming and try to label farmers as inhumane redneck idiots.

We talked about them in Ag and the teacher got really worked up. She doesn't like Chipotle. not cuz of the food, cuz of what they do.

That's not cool, man. Farming in general has gone down the shitter since it became industrial. I feel bad for any independent farmer, it must be incredibly difficult.

Epilogue 2, Part 1

January 22, 2018

-bzzbzzbzzbzz-
“Jesus. Who’s calling at this hour?”
I turned over my buzzing phone and was shocked at what I saw.
“Kura?!”
“WHAT” Sara woke up with a jolt.
“Dammit Jackie. Who’s calling you?”
“...er… an old friend,” I swiped my phone, “Kura, what the hell are you calling me this late for?”
I was met with a voice I hadn’t heard in a while. It was nice to hear Japanese again, “Dude, it’s the afternoon, what’re you talking abo- ohhh, shit, you live in America that’s right. Hope I didn’t wake you.”
“You woke me. And my girlfriend.”
“You’ve got a girlfriend, dude? Niceeeeeeee. Hey, actually, you know what. That’s what I wanted to call you about.”
“My girlfriend?”
“uh… no. Do you, uh… Do you remember Yui?”
“Who-y?”
“Yui Minamisawa, me and her have been going out. I dunno if you ever met her…”
“Then how the hell am I supposed to know who she is?!”
“Uh, hahaha, I dunno man. But yeah, listen, so… uh, you know your birds and bees right?”
“What.”
“Yeah, like, you know. You had ‘The Talk’ with your pop once right?”
“Kura what the hell are you talking about.”
“Yeah, so, uh… you know. We did what, uh, what couples do, right. And uh… Surprise! We have to get married now! So, uh, you’re inv-”
“Wait, Kura, what are you saying?”
“We have to get married now. We, uh… Yeah, we have to. I mean, we definitely want to, but we, like, uh… ha-”
“Kura. Why in god’s name do you have to get married to her?”
“Allen. Uh… heheh, uh… birds and bees. Have to get married. Uh… yeah, heh… heh.”
“Oh my god. Kura. Are you kidding me right now?”
“Taiga’s gonna be a daddy, hah… hahahaaaa…

Jack, I’ve made a mistake. Oh my god, this was totally unexpected. Jesus Christ, Jack, I don’t think that I’m ready. OH god, what if I’m a terrible father?! What if I can’t provide for my soon to be born child?! JACK, WHAT IF THE WORLD COMES TO AN END? … What if I can’t play baseball anymore? … OH my god… I love Yui, but a kid? I don’t think that we’re ready. Oh god why did I have to go out and buy those chea-”
“Kura! Slow down! Holy hell, it’ll all be fine. You’re going to be a great father. I know you will.”
“Are you sure, man? What if I’m a terrible husband…”
“Taiga Kura. You are one of the best men I have ever met. You ooze charisma, you can always spin a phrase. You’ve always been good at keeping spirits up. You’re going to make an excellent father and an even better husband. I know you will.”
“Jack…” I heard some sniffles, the waterworks were inbound, “Jaaaaaaack! Thaaaaank youuuuuu! I knew calling you would be a good idea. O--O-Koyato said it would be bad to bother you. But it’s clear that bothering you was the right choiiiiiiceeeeee!”
“Thanks. Thanks. Were you just calling for a pep talk? Because if so, I’d like to go back to sle-”
“No! nonononono, hold on boss. I, uh, I called to invite you to my wedding! It’s in, like, 2 weeks. I think. Yeah, 2 weeks. Can you make it?”
“...A little more warning would’ve been nice, but I think that we should be able to.”
“Awesome, man, thank you.”
“See you soon.”
“Bye, sir.”

-beep-

“Who was that?” Sara asked
“An old player of mine. A fool. Oh, uh, also… uh, we’re going to Japan in two weeks, heheh…”
“... oi.”

Epilogue 2, Part 2

February 5, 2018
Hotel Granvia, Kyoto
14:47

“Wow, Sara, you look… You look incredible.”
“Thanks. You look pretty sharp yourself.”
“Heehee, thank you darling.”

“Jack!” I heard my name called.
I turned to look to my left
“Laisei! It’s been a while buddy.”
I went in for the handshake, he went for the hug.
Awkwardness ensued.

“Oh, heh, uh… yeah. Welcome back to Japan!” He looked to Sara, “I can understand your leaving the team.”
“Hahah, what can I say? I’m a lucky man.”
Laisei whipped out English. Perfect English.
“It’s a pleasure to meet you, miss. I’m the new GM of the Kyoto Knights, Laisei Matsubara. It was an absolute honor working with your husband. He’s quite the man, hahaha.”
“Oh, my, well... It’s nice to meet you Laisei.” Sara responded, as shocked as I was at Laisei’s English ability.
“Well, I’m seated over there. So I’ll be seeing you Jack. It was an honor to meet you, milady.” He bowed and was off to his table

“You had some polite friends over here, Jackie.”
“Heh. Yeah.”

I was met by the rest of the team, we exchanged some words, some hugs and Sara got some looks. It’s very unusual for a Japanese man to see a light brown haired, white skinned, 5’8” woman.

15:30

The minister walked out, “If I could have everyone sit, please.”
Everyone sat.
The music began and everyone turned their heads towards the back. Kura walked out adorned in a sharp white suit.
And a Buffaloes hat. Whaaaaaaaaaaaat
Goddammit Kura… That’s not appropriate attire for this.
Sara held back a chuckle, as did most of the crowd, I would presume.
He walked up to the front, Oda and Kurihara were up there too, his best men.

Next up, naturally, was the bride. A Yui Minamisawa. I’d never met her, naturally, so I had no idea what to expect. But, knowing Kura, she’s probably a model or something.

The music flared up once again.
I looked at Kura adjust his tie, he was very sweaty.

From the corner of the doorway, the bottom of a white gown was visible.
Out walked a small woman, no taller than 5’2,” her face concealed by a veil and a bouquet of pinkish flowers. She moved the flowers down and her face was visible.
Oh my goodness. She’s adorableeeee I thought to myself. This really wasn’t what I was expecting.
I mean, who would’ve thought our team’s token philanderer would end up with someone so small and cute. And jeez, she can’t even be 22…
No wonder Kura “had to marry her.” I can’t believe that idiot.

They said their usual vows and everything. I managed to snap a picture of the two of them before they went in for the ceremonial kiss.

Image
oh jeez, I forgot how strange pictures came out over here, heh.

I can’t believe he wore that hat…

Did Kura go to the Buffaloes, or is that just because you can't be on the Knights in My Life mode?

Wonderful epilogues so far, man. Well done.

Kura's favorite team growing up was the Buffaloes, so he reps them in the offseason

and it may possibly be because I can't play as the Knights in MyLife who knows

Epilogue 2, Part 3

“Heeeeeeey, Jack, thanks for coming man!” Kura ran up to me and gave me a slap on the back, almost spilling my drink
“Oh, shoot, sorry man.”
“No worries. Congratulations, Taiga! I have to say, I didn’t expect your wife to be so… so not, uh… I didn’t expect her to b-”
“To be so cute? Heh, yeah, me neither.”

Kura and I caught up about old times, which truthfully weren’t that old at all.
Kurihara and Oda joined in the fray and we chatted and laughed a good bit.

It was nice to catch up with some of my old players. This time not as their boss, but instead as their friend.

Sara and I hopped on the earliest plane we could get. I felt very ambivalent upon taking off, leaving the Land of the Rising Sun.

Perhaps for the last time.

Epilogue 3, Part 1

October 23, 2027

--:-- AM

“ -ke -p! Wa-- p! Wake up! Wake up! Wake up!”
“Okay, honey, I think he gets it.”
“Huh…? Wah…?”
My vision slowly came to, and I was staring at my clock, 8:19 it said in bold white.
“C’mon Jackie, wake up. You only turn 40 once!”
I turned over to see Sara and Alice standing there with a tray covered with breakfast.
“Oh you guys didn't need to do that.”
“But we wanted to, daddy!” Alice said, quite loudly. It seems that 6 year old girls don’t have any other volume.
“Well, thank you, you two. It all looks delicious.”

Alice and Sara took a seat next to me, and popped on the TV. The TODAY show was on, as it always is.

I ate my pancakes and toast. A true breakfast for champions.
“Mmm… Rhat was delicirious… Ahhh… guys. Thank you so much, you really did a bang up job.”
“You’re welcome! Now come downstairs for presents!”
Alice ran me down the stairs
“Oh, jeez, Alice, sweetie. Slow down, I don’t think daddy’s old bones can handle such things anymore.” Sara said with a wry smile
“Oh, hardy har har. I’m more than capable!”

I wound up my legs to make a sprint to the dining room where my presents awaited.
“Ow!” annnd my back.
Sara cracked up.
Damn you…

I hobbled into the dining room, where my humble assortment of five gifts awaited.
“Ooh, which one should I open first?”
Alice quickly ran and grabbed a poorly wrapped gift, “this one! This one!” she yelled
“I’ve no objections, heehee.”

I carefully tore open the present. Breaking through mountains of tape that held the Frankenstein-esque mess together.

...It was a mug. A “I love daddy” mug.
Dammit Allen, hold it together.
Sara had her camera affixed on my face, hopefully my sappy tears weren’t visible.
“I… I love it, Alice. Thank youuuu.” I gave her a great big hug

Sara chuckled at the whole thing. She never ceases to find it hilarious that I am far more emotional than she is.
“Well, go on, Jackie. You’ve still got some left.”
“Oh, uh, right. Right.”

I moved on to the next largest present in line. It was a robe, “oh you know me so well.” I said, holding it up to me. “I do love my greens.”

The next gift was bagged. I pulled out the tissue paper and was met with some sort of wooden box. “What’s this?”
Out of the bag, I could see that there was a label on the box, “Kyoto Lighting.”
“uhh, what is this?” I asked Sara
“Open it up.”

I pried open the top and inside was a lightbulb.
And a baseball.

The baseball had some beautiful Japanese script on it. “Kura wrote this. He has shockingly lovely handwriting.” I said aloud to no one in particular

“Jack. We’d all like to thank you for everything that you did for Kyoto (and Kyoto Lighting too). You brought us unmatched joy, giving us both a sports team for the first time, and a championship flag to hang with pride as well. Mr. Allen, though you were only here for a short time, we all would like to personally thank you. The accompanying bulb may seem standard, but it was the one that had been in the overhead light in your office. May it watch over you forever more.

- Matsuo Kanegi, and the rest of the Knights organization”

Dammit. I tried as I could, but the waterworks were inbound.
I turned my head in embarrassment, Sara still recording me, and laughing all the while.
“What a sweet thing they did, huh?” she said
“Y-yeah, real sweet.”

The other two presents I ended up getting were some tickets to a play that I had been itching to see for a while, and a $200 Visa gift card, “it’s like free money!” Sara said.
“Can’t argue with you there.”

I think I got the feels along with Jack when he read the note. Very well done with this epilogue.

Epilogue 3, Part 2

11:57 PM

The house was dark. Sara and Alice were both asleep.
I crept upstairs to my office.

On my shelf was the baseball and lightbulb that the team sent me.
I sat in my slightly creaky rolling chair and just looked at them.
At a time well past.

Baseball was my life for so long, it’s strange to look back on it. It’s been hard for me to adjust to life anew, all settled down with a family, which is what I wanted, really.
Even still, leaving behind my first love has always been something that I've wrestled with in my mind. “Was it the right decision or not?”

I spun around in my chair and was met with a drawing done by Alice that I had left atop my computer.
I laughed.

Of course it was the right decision.

---

So that'll really do it this time for real, folks

It's been a pleasure to write as Jack for all this time

Thank you all for reading :}
