you mafia members always stay together ;)

but yes, ppfan, thanks for a log of greatness. writing was spectacular and you've had me enthralled in the story since the Tigers back in 2011. Kurihara and the epic Knights team will always be remembered. This is certainly something we'll have to look back on. It had a pretty satisfying ending.. but I'm sad to see it go.

Looking forward to your next adventure. :D

Epilogue 1, Part 1

---

December 23, 2017

10:47 PM

-bzzbzzbzzbzzbzz-
Despite the din of the Target I was in, I was able to feel my phone vibrating in my pocket. I took it out and saw that it was Sara.
“What’s up?”
“Hey Jackie, how goes the shopping?”
“Heheh… Well, I certainly wish I did some earlier…”
“What have I been telling you?”
“Yeah, yeah, I know, I know. I’ve only got Stephen left, everyone else has been bought.”
“Alrighty, I won’t keep you then. Good luck, Jackie.”
“Hah, thanks.”

She hung up and I went back to my frantic search for something for Stephen.
Maybe a giftcard will do…? No… I can’t be that impersonal.

.
.
.

11:14 PM

“A giftcard it is, then.” I grabbed the one with the little dog with the Target target on its eye. Stephen does love dogs, after all.
I made my way to the register, though the line was ungodly long
I could always just steal it…

No. That would be wrong. Jesus.

11:29 PM

“Attention shoppers,” a tired sounding voice silenced the din, “we will be closing in 10 minutes. We apologize for any inconveniences.”
The momentary silence erupted into a full scale frenzy.
Luckily, I was already at the register, “crazy day, huh?” I said to the young man manning it
“Yeah. You can just kill me now.” He chuckled, which was good, because I was almost sure he was serious. He handed me my bags, “Merry Christmas… Er, uh, happy holidays.”
“Merry Christmas, Jason.” His name was Jason, as evidenced by his ID tag.

“I can’t believe all you got your brother was a gift card, Jackie.”
“Well, excuse me, princess. I was short pressed on time, this is all they had.”
“Jackie. Come on now.”
“I know…”
I slunk over to my room and slipped the giftcard into an envelope.
Sara and I didn’t really have much else to do that day other than the dreaded wrapping of presents. I really hope that everyone likes what we got them. We spent a bunch of time shopping for all of them.
Well… All of them except Stephen.

Epilogue 1, Part 2

December 25, 2017

9:46 AM

“...Jack. Wake up.”
I felt Sara pushing me, waking me from my peaceful slumber and dreams of baseball.
“...wrhat…?” I managed to muster in my sleepy stupor.
“C’mon, get up. We’ve got some presents to open.”
“...oh yeah.”
It’s Christmas, that’s right. Heh, I’d forgotten.
This sure is a farcry from my childhood. Back when I was barely able to register two hours of sleep and the second the clock hit “7:00” I would go rushing into my parents room, Stephen close behind, to force them to come down and see what Santa had brought us.
I got up, threw on the robe that Sara had given to me a couple days prior, and headed down to see our modest tree in the living room with a whole slew of bags under it.
Neither of us was too fond of wrapping.

I made Sara and myself some coffee, threw on the Christmas tunes, and sat down on the couch.
“Go on, Jackie, you go first.”
“I’ve no objections.” I reached down and grabbed the first bag I saw with a “TO: Jackie” on it.
Oh how I love how she still calls me Jackie

I took out the tissue paper and was met with a… er… unique looking sweater.
“Oh… hahah, uh, thanks Sara. It’s uh, it’s great!”
“Do you really like it? I picked it out of a pile of them. I thought it looked pretty sharp.”
“Oh yeah, definitely. It’s definitely ‘sharp.’ Yep, no doubt about that. ‘Sharp.’”

Sara broke the silence with a laugh, “Jack. It’s heinous.”
“Oh phew, thank god. I thought you were serious about this, hahahaha.”
“... I was.” She put on her serious face again
Shit. “Oh, er, uh… oh. Just kidding, I love it!”
“Nice try, Jackie, heheh. It really is a joke, by the way. Jesus, the mere fact you thought that it was serious is insulting to my sense of fashion.”
“I… Oh. I apologize, my sweet. I love you. You’re wonderful.”
“Nice save.”
“Thanks, I try. Heheh. Now hey, go on, open yours.”

She went for the one thing that I actually wrapped, a long and thin package. (It was a watch).
She opened it, “oh, wow, Jackie. It’s lovely!”
“Yeah, I really like it. My mother actually gave it to Stephen a few years back, hahaha. So I guess you could say that it’s a bit of a family heirloom.”
“Heheh, I guess you could.”

Sara and I went on opening our gifts one by one. Aside from my hideous sweater, I actually got some nice stuff. A pretty good haul, if I do say so myself. Especially for our first Christmas together.

12:13 PM

“You all set?” I asked Sara as I picked up the cookies we made.
We were to head to my parents' house as per tradition.
“All set.”
We hopped in my car, gifts in the backseat, with the non-stop Magic 106.7 Christmas music playing. It was actually a very nice scene.

Our first Christmas… This is pretty awesome. I thought to myself.
My life has been pretty crazy. I was a baseball fanatic growing up, holding tightly onto my dream of one day playing in the big leagues. I could’ve made it too, heheh. That compound fracture in my wrist really did me in.

The more I think about it though, it was really a blessing in disguise. I would never had gone to Japan had I not met Kevin, which was a direct result of me being late to Computer Science 101 that day because of my lack of sleep the night before. I never would’ve gone through that murder trial. I never would’ve actually stayed in Japan had it not been for that. No Tigers, which by extension means no Knights. No Knights means that Stephen wouldn’t have come over for the Samurais, and god knows what he’d be doing now. And perhaps most importantly, no Knights means no Sara…

It’s funny to think about how such a little event can affect your life. And the lives of others, too. The players we picked up for the Knights were all given a shot before they probably should have, and they all proved the naysayers wrong, what with some of them looking to be the greatest to ever play.

As I was thinking, we pulled up to the house I grew up in in Newton. “Some things never change.” I said aloud
“Hmm?” Sara asked
“What? Oh, heh, nothing.”
“Well, come here, I need some help with these.”
“Oh, uh, right. Sorry.”

-dingdong-
“Jackie!” My mother hugged me and invited the two of us in
I saw my dad, still lounging on the chair he has been for the past 14 years.
“Hey Johnny. Haha, about time you brought a lady over.”
“...Dad… This is Sara, my, uh, my girlfriend.”
“It’s nice to meet you, Mr. Allen.”
“Oh Jesus, Sara, call me John.”
“Well, in that case, it’s nice to meet you John.”
“I apologize for his rudeness.” My mother said, carrying in the brie I love so very dearly.
I hopped on that shit like a grasshopper on grass

Epilogue 1, Part 3

3:57 PM

The rest of the family trickled in.
Stephen was the last to arrive.

“Now that we’re all here… Dinner should be ready in 15 minutes or so.” My mother announced
My uncles went on talking about motorcycle stories of old. Sharing them almost as if they were war stories. My dad was talking with Sara, giving her some hearty laughs. My mother was busy in the kitchen, slaving away over her meal, making sure that it was perfect. My aunts were chatting about something… I’ve honestly no clue what it was. My younger cousins played around on the old PS3 I still had laying around.

Stephen and I stood in the parlor.
“Ahhh, remember all this, Jackie.”
We looked at the 11 foot tree that my parents had bought.
“Heh, of course. Allen Christmases have always been the best.”

“Do you miss it?” Stephen asked
“Miss it? ...Yeah. I do. But I had to move on. There are more important things in life than baseball.”
“Heh, when did you start thinking like that?”
“Hahaha, it does sound a little weird coming from me.”
Stephen and I laughed

“But yeah, I really do miss it. I’m only a month or so removed, but my life already is a lot different.”
“I would imagine. It’s a big shift. You don’t have to stress about draft picks or resignings or free agents anymore. That must be pretty great.”
“Heh, I can’t complain. Settling down is weird, man. I dunno.”
“Yeah… It is.”
“So are you going to stay in the business?”
“Yeah. I’m not planning on leaving anytime soon. Someone’s got to keep the Allen legacy alive in Japan!”
“Good. Good. Good for you, man. I wish you guys the best. Well, except against Laisei.”
“Heh, thanks bro.”
“No problem.”

7:15 PM

The ham and scalloped potatoes had been cleared. The lasagna was holding on with one untouched piece, and the rolls had dissipated.
“Yet another meal I can’t complain about in the slightest.” My uncle exclaimed, rubbing his stomach.

We all made the pilgrimage to the parlor.
It was present time.

I got a nice pair of khakis along with a gift card to Chipotle from my parents. A good haul.

7:38 PM

“That was fun, Jackie.” Sara told me
“Yeah.” was all I had in response

My mother came up to us. “Oh, do you have to leave so soon?”
“Heh, yeah, we should get going.”
“Aw, okay. Drive home safe, Jack. We love you.”
“Love you too, ma.”

We hugged, Sara hugged, we gave the traditional handshakes and hugs to all in attendance, and Stephen and I shared a nice headnod.

We got back into my car, sat in the darkness for a few minutes, and made our way back home.

Back to our home.

Hunh, that’s something I’ll have to get used to.

I've eaten at Chipotle. My uncle sells milk to them though. But they're basically against everything in modern farming and try to label farmers as inhumane redneck idiots.

We talked about them in Ag and the teacher got really worked up. She doesn't like Chipotle. not cuz of the food, cuz of what they do.
