His annual salary is 1100 (...points?) and gets 51 a month, but 15 is deducted each month for rent on his apartment.

The most expensive thing I've come across so far is golf, which was 10. So his pay is okay.

Zero's parents won't let him get it...

Luckily I have today off, I need some time to think. It's my second year up here in the NPB and as a first round draft pick, I should already be a mainstay on the 1st string team. In fact, I've been checking the newspapers and the internet about me, "Nishijima, a Waste." it said "Masumi Nishijima: Bust." These really put me in a bad mood, naturally. I decided that it would be best to just head out into the city and walk around. Seeing as I had nothing better to do.

I drove into town in my new car, which I bought on the same day of my apartment building. Which makes it over a year old. But it's still new to me...

Anyways, when I got into town I saw some folks talking near a newspaper stand.

"Hey, you hear about that Nishijima kid?" one said
"Oh yeah! He's really been a disappointment." another replied
"Didn't he hit a homerun in one game?"
"Yeah. Once."
"He sucks, man."
"Yeah, he does."

I sunk into my sweatshirt, and pulled the hood over my head. It wasn't a particularly cold day, so I was sweating in the heat. But it was worth it if it could save me the shame of looking upon one of the many critics of my career.

I had been aimlessly walking around for about an hour when my phone rang.
"Uh, hello?"
"Masumi?"
"Who is this?"
"You don't even remember the voice of your own father?!"
...Father? I haven't spoken to him in years.
"I don't have a father."
"I see. Don't you think that it would be tough for you to be here without a father though?"
"No. Because I haven't had a father for years."
"..."
"I don't know who you are, and I don't know what you're doing, but my father has been dead for years. If you think this is some kind of joke, then you are truly a horrible, twisted person. I don't have time for this."
As I went to hangup my cellphone
"W-wait Masumi!"
"What?"
"Masumi, I am your father. You can choose not to believe me if you want, I don't care. I just want you to know that I'm not really dead."
"You 'just wanted to let me know'? Come on now, you can't honestly believe that I'm that big of an idiot."
"I don't think that you're an idiot at all. I mean, it is your dream to become a detective."

...Detective. That's right. I wanted to be a detective. I wanted to follow my father and become a detective... Why had I forgotten this?

"...Detective..." I managed to say after a few uncomfortable moments of silence.
"That's right Masumi. Have you followed up on that yet?"

I have not. I moved over to baseball... Why did I do that?

"Masumi?"
"Oh, uh, yeah. Hey."
"Come down to my office if you ever want to talk."
"Uh, alright. Goodbye."

I hung up.

What just happened? Why did my "father" call? He was dead... Or so I thought.

I was extremely dissapointed that he didn't shout, "NOOOOOOOO!" when he found out about the father...
