So, basically, the Japanese version of Luke Putkonen?

(Seriously, do a Google image search of him; none of them are pictures of him smiling.)

Those games… didn’t go well. Getting our asses handed to us isn’t exactly the way I want to start off the season…
“...and we’ll go to our guest analyst,” I had flipped to Nippon Sports Now, “Masato Kurihara.”
Kurihara? I never expected him to go on TV.

“Thanks, Morimoto. Yes, baseball is in, pardon the pun, full swing once again! And it’s looking to be another good season for the overhauled NPB. It’s been… Wow, it’s already been 9 years. The expansion teams are finally starting to become competitive, well… save for the Foxes… and the veteran teams are back in their 20teens form. Goro Akiyama of the Bears hit his league leading 12th homerun last night.”
“He’s been shocking everyone for a couple of years now.” Morimoto cut in
“He really has. Some of the released scouting reports on him said he would be lucky to reach double digits in homeruns.”
“Hah! That couldn’t be farther from the truth. Your record may not be so unbreakable after all, eh, Kurihara?”
“Hahah, I invite anyone to try and break it.”
“What do you think about the new Knights uniforms?”
“I really like them, actually. I always felt ours were a little too dark. Those came on Nomoto’s orders, I believe.”

“Well, thank you Kurihara.”
“Oh, no problem. Thanks for having me.”
“Of course! ...We’ll be back after this short message.”

A commercial for Kura and Oda’s joint fashion line came on, very cleverly called… “KOKO”

A well-dressed young woman walks down the street, texting.
She ignores everything that she walks by, including a man-sized blue lobster, her mother, a man struggling with carrying his boxes, an old woman trying to cross the street, the Holy Grail, a man swallowing a flaming sword, an octopus with a wife and children, a leaf boat being captained by Admiral Ant, but… something catches her attention.

Standing aloofly is none other than teenage heartthrob and Knights’ set-up man, Yuya Sugiya.

(Christ, he’s handsome. I couldn’t help but thinking)

He’s adorned in red skinny jeans and a collared shirt strategically covered by a beige sweater.
“Who’s that?” the girl asks a salaryman next to her
“That’s Yuya Sugiya, isn’t it? He’s always hanging around here.”
“Yes, it is I, Yuya Sugiya.” He struts over to her. “Do you want an autograph?”
“No, but I do want to know what brand those luscious clothes are.”
Yuya turns to face the camera, “KOKO, the new luxury casual wear from the minds of the dynamic middle infield duo, Taiga Kura and Koyato Oda.”

A splash image of a stylized “KOKO” splattered the screen.

“I think that’s enough TV for today.”

We’ve got the second stringers of the BayStars. Other than Ishihara, they aren’t much of a threat.

Itaru Ishihara - SP
AGE, B/T, TOP SPD, CON, STAM, PITCHES
19, R/R, 148 km/h (92 mph), A, C, curveball - 3, splitter - 6
He was just drafted this past season. Though his first start didn’t exactly meet expectations, he’s still someone we can’t take lightly. We’ll be facing him in game 3 of the series.
W-L: 0-1
ERA: 9.00

Kensou Hirota - 3B
AGE, 2ND POSITION, B/T, TRJ, CON, POW, RUN, ARM, FLD, E RES
18, 1B, L/R, 3, D, C, D, A, D, D
He’s known for his ability to hit line drives to the opposite field and his outstanding arm. He just recently made the transition from the outfield to third so they can conserve his relatively weak legs. His presence in the middle of the order is frightening.
AVG: .480
HR: 1
RBI: 5

Yokohama BayStars (2nd) - 4 (1-3-0)
Asuka Archers - 6 (1-3-0)

April 13, 2035

Yokohama BayStars (2nd) - 0 (1-4-0)
Asuka Archers - 8 (2-3-0)

April 14, 2035

1|0|0|3|0|0|1|0|0 5|9|2 BayStars (2nd) (2-4-0)
0|0|0|0|0|0|3|0|0 3|7|0 Archers (2-4-0)

1. Takumichi Ishikawa - CF (3-3)
2. Kouhai Yoshimi - RF (0-3)
3. Masayoshi Fujita - 2B (1-3, HR [2], 3 RBI [7, 8, 9])
4. Ken Saitoh - C (2-3)
5. Kaz Murata - 3B (0-2, BB)
6. Satoshi Kura - SS (1-3)
7. Gingo Yokoi - DH (0-2, K)
8. Taiga Shimizu - LF (0-3)
9. Moriaki Kawaguchi - 1B (0-2)

Pitcher(s):
Michinori Kondo (6 IP, 4 R, 1 K, 1 BB)
Atsuto Mutou (3 IP, 1 R, 3 K)

WP: Itaru Ishihara (1-1) [6.2 IP, 3 R, 3 ER,1 K]
LP: Michinori Kondo (0-2)
S: Kai Yoshizawa (3)

Well, at least we got our first couple of wins...

"-percent chance of slight rain for the next few days." The weatherman droned on as he usually did
An off day... and I have nothing to do. How typical...
I let out a top class sigh, stood up, and stretched. "I guess I should put this back now, huh?" I said to the slight breeze in my apartment. Unsurprisingly, it didn't respond.
I grabbed my now empty bowl and trudged into the kitchen area. The daunting pile of dishes waiting for me in the sink did little for the feng shui, but, since they had been there for so long, who am I to move them?
I stared at them for a good while, "eh, what's one more?" I said before carefully adding yet another dish to the mountain.

As I walked back to my couch, where I had fully planned on spending the entire day, I heard a faint buzzing noise. Must be my phone.
It ended. I didn't pay much mind to it.
If it's that important, they'll call back.
I sat down and the buzzing started right back up.

It was my brother, Kenma. That's weird, I thought, he doesn't usually call...
I picked up.

"Uh, hell-"
I was immediately cut off, "What the *(censored)*, Ryu?! Why weren't you answering? I called you like 5 times!"
"Whoa, Kenma--slow down! What's wrong?"

He didn't say anything for a few seconds.
Very slowly and quietly, Kenma murmured "It's dad. It's... It's not looking good."
...
"Wha- what do you mean?"
"He just collapsed! At least, that's what mom's saying. I'm driving to the hospital right now."
"Which hospital is it?"
"Kyoto City Hospital."
"O-okay, I'll be right down."

"Hurry."

Kenma hung up.

Well...

Shit.

“I wish I had more news, but… there’s just not much we can say at this point… Please, excuse me.”
The doctor, Kawasawa, bowed and walked out of the room.
Kenma, Miyuki (my sister), my mother and I had been sitting in silence in the waiting room for what seemed to be days.
“So…” Kenma spoke up for the first time, “no news is good news… right?”
Miyuki and I looked at each other and both moved our eyes to the floor.
“We have to hope so.” my mother said in response, hands clenched tightly around some tissues.

They have yet to tell us what’s wrong with my father, which is most certainly a bad sign. They either don’t know, or don’t want to say.
I’m not sure which I would prefer.

15:55

Not much was said between my family and I.
We took turns taking naps, but none of them lasted more than 15 minutes.

Truth be told, we were all terrified.

Despite all of me and Kenma’s attempts to get group morale up, we both knew that this wasn’t looking good.

All 5 foot, 7 inches of the white coated Dr. Kawasawa walked into the room with heavy steps.
Oh no…

When he got over to us, he looked down at his shoes, took a sharp inhale, and let out a quiet sigh. His eyes rolled upwards to meet my mother’s.

“I… I’m so sorry. There… There wasn’t anything that we could do.”

I closed my eyes and felt the tears welling up.
I heard my mother’s wail and a tabled slammed.
“*(censored)*!” Kenma yelled
“Kenma…” Miyuki tried to console him, but there was nothing to say.

He’s gone… Just like that.

I opened my eyes back up to see that Kawasawa’s cold, clinical eyes were staring back at mine. They shimmered from the sunlight coming in through the window.
I couldn’t help but think what a beautiful day it was outside.

The weatherman was wrong…

With that thought, I let out a shrill scream and broke down crying.
