“Well isn’t that just the cutest little thing.” I found myself accidentally saying aloud looking at the miniature Eiffel Tower that stood outside the deceptively French Bistro looking cafe that was just blocks from the 3L Apartment Complex. Ms. Arakawa was talking to the host.

She tapped me on the shoulder, “They’ll have a table ready for us in 15 minutes.”
“That, uh, that long, huh? Wait…” What she said bounced around my head, “This is a sit down restaurant?”
“Of course!”
“Oh! Uh… Haha! Coolio!.....”

Oh no. I stood staring like a fool. Years. It has been years since that… “word” has slipped out… Why now… Why now of all times?

“Oh wow,” Ms. Arakawa raised her eyebrows, “I don’t think anyone’s said ‘coolio’ in a good 50 years.”
“Well, uh, what can I say? I’m a trendsetter.”
She stared at me, “I don’t think that’s what ‘coolio’ would make you, Mr. Azuma.” There were no traces of sarcasm. Did she… Was I just insulted?

“Reika! Reika for two!” The host’s booming voice bellowed throughout the patio area.
“Ah,” Ms. Arakawa put her hand up, “that’s us, Mr. Azuma.”

After placing our orders, Ms. Arakawa exhaled sharply.
“Phewf…” She put her elbow on the table and rested her wonderfully round face on her palm. “Ryu.” She said, staring directly into my eyes.
“Yuh--Yes!” I replied, needlessly loud.
“So…” she trailed off and sighed once again, shifting her focus to the people walking by. Her sudden melancholy mood struck me by surprise.
“So…?” I echoed.
“What do you think?” she asked
“What do I think? Uh… Think about what?”
“About the apartment!”

The pep I had come to expect in our brief meeting resurfaced. Her eyes squinted as she smiled.

“Oh! Well, uh… hunh, I really liked it, I have to say.”
I knew it… This was only to butter me up so I’ll buy the apartment… Very clever Ms. Arakawa.
“That’s really great to hear! I noticed you seemed a little quiet during our tour, so I was a bit concerned you didn’t like it too much.”
“Oh, haha, noooo nononono. I liked it. The tour you gave was a great--was good too, don’t, heh, don’t worry about it.”
“I wasn’t worried.”

Good to see confidence is no issue for this woman. “Oh… Haha, right.”
“Well then, Mr. Azuma, why were you quiet?” she once again stared directly into my eyes.
Quite a loaded question there… “Well, you know… I was uh, just overwhelmed is all. Moving to a new place, a new wonderful home, shown by a beautif--”
She raised an eyebrow. “Oh?”
“A-a-a-a beautiful… Beautiful view!! What about those sunrises, huh? Wow, I just can’t even believehowbeautifulthosewould… be…”
“My my, Mr. Azuma. You’re quite the casanova, aren’t you?” she chuckled
“I… uh, you know…” I scratched the back of my head, “haha…”
“Those views really are beautiful in the morning, Mr. Azuma.”
“Huh? Oh yeah, they would be, yeah.”
“Have you ever seen a sunrise?”
“Uh… Maybe on my way to school once or twice. I was never really a morning person. More of a night owl, hoot hoot!”

Oh my god what have I done. Why did I just “hoot hoot?” WHAT AM I DOING?

Her smile was suddenly catty. Meow meow… What is going on…
“Then,” she was hiding her mouth, “perhaps you’d like to see one?” she said in between chuckles.
“I… Uh… Nahhhh, I’m more of a sleep-in-on-my-day-off kind of guy.” What am I DOING? RYU STOP SPEAKING. “Don’t get too many days off, haha!” ...
“Oh?" She looked straight into my eyes. Almost as if she was trying to see through them.

"Then I go back to my original question, Mr. Azuma. What do you think?”
“...Uh, heh, about the apartment?”
“No. About me.”

“Well?” Ms. Arakawa’s voice pierced the silence, “you just gonna keep staring at me with your mouth open, or are you going to give me an answer?”
Oh no, how long had I been staring…?
“Oh! Uh, right… Well, you... huh?” I didn’t know what to say, I was trapped.
She nodded with an expectant smirk.
“...” I couldn’t say anything.
She continued to look at me straight in the eyes. Her gaze was almost intoxicating. Her soft smile turned to a sympathetic sigh. “Okay.” rolled out on her breath.

She took a sip of her water.

I have nothing. Nothing to say, no way to react to this. Why can’t I just say what I’m obviously feeling? It’s pretty clear that she already knows how I feel… Goddammit, I can’t let this opportunity pass me by. Right? This is an opportunity, right? I’m not just like imagining this? She definitely means if I “like her,” yeah? Well… This could be if I like her as a real estate agent. No! No, screw that, there’s no way that’s what this is about. All the air in my body wouldn’t have left when she asked that if that’s what she meant. And the sunrise?? She asked if I want to watch a sunrise! That has to mean with her, which would mean we’d have spent the nigh…

“-- uh, sir?” the waiter’s voice broke me out of my trance.
“...Huh?” I looked in his general direction.
“Do you want any ground pepper with your salad?”
“What?”
“Pepper.” He showed me the grinder, “any pepper?”
“Oh, uh, no. Thank you. I’m all set.”
“Of course.” He said and quickly scurried off to his next table.

“Welcome back to the real world, Mr. Azuma.” Ms. Arakawa brought my attention back to her, “I thought I lost you there for a moment.”
“Hmm?”
“You were looking out the window for a good five minutes. Seemed you were thinking pretty intently on something. The apartment, I’m hoping! Heehee.” Her chipper saleswoman voice had returned.
Guess I missed my window…

We enjoyed our slightly French meals with a professional tone to our conversation that clouded the whole afternoon.

She drove me back to the motel.

“Thanks for the ride, Ms. Arakawa. You saved me a pretty sweaty walk, haha…!”
“You’re welcome, Mr. Azuma.”
I stepped out into the blazing July heat and closed the door. I heard the window slide open.
“Give me a call in the morning once you’ve decided. I’ll be eagerly awaiting!”
“Heh, right. Yeah. Will do.”

We looked at one another. It seemed to me that we were both waiting for the other to say something.

“Well,” she smiled, “I’ll be seeing you then, Ryu.”
“Yeah… See ya, Ms. Arakawa.”

We went back to staring.
“I’m going to close the window now, Mr. Azuma.”
“Oh! Right, sorry.” I took my elbows off of her door and watched the window slowly climb its way closed.

Her car sped away.
I rambled back into my room.
My pillow was wet with tears.
I’m *(censored)* pathetic…

I couldn’t sleep. My mind wouldn’t stop. It wouldn’t let up. There was no way I would ever stop berating myself for what I pulled. And so, “Mr. Night Owl” was awake, staring at the ceiling, at 7 in the morning. I grabbed an orange, turned on the TV, and watched the news.

I still need to call her. Despite it all, I still need to call her...

9:00

knockknockknock
“Mr. Azuma? Hellooooo?” A woman’s voice snuck through the door. She continued to knock.
I shambled over and propped the door open.
“Ah, hi! Just wanted to make sure you knew check-out time is 10!”
“Yep.”
“Oh, okay. Cool! Just head on over to the office with your key when you’re all set, okay?”
“Sure thing.”
“Thanks for staying at the 123!”
I closed the door.

Guess it’s now or never.

I dialed Ms. Arakawa’s personal number.
On the second ring, she picked up.
“So much for not being an early bird, eh Mr. Azuma?”
“...” Good to see she hasn’t put a second thought into yesterday…
“Hmhm! Well, anyways… What’re you thinking?”
“...”
“Mr. Azuma? You still with me? Hopefully there aren’t any windows aroun--”
“*(censored)* it.” I said, almost whispering.
“Huh?” I don’t know if she just didn’t hear me, or if she was confused at my sudden obscenity.

“I said, ‘*(censored)* it.’” I made sure to say it loud and clear this time, “I… I like you. A lot. I would love to get to know you better. I was a goddamned fool not to say anything yesterday, and I actually couldn’t even sleep because I was so disappointed with myself for not saying anything. You’re a beautiful woman, and I guess I was just… scared, I don’t know, to say anything yesterday. Hell, someone like you interested in me?! That’s pretty freaking wild. I just, I… uh… yeah. I dunno.”
“...” Now she was the one without a response.

I sat on the motel bed, hand firmly clutching my phone, eyes unmoving.
Holy shit, what did I just say?

She began to laugh. Not her usual polite, abrupt chuckle, but a full blown laugh. I didn’t know what to make of it.
“Wow!” She said. “You really laid it all out there, huh?”
“Uh… I, uh… I guess I did.”
“Well I’m glad, Ryu.”
.
.
.
“I’ll be over to pick you up in 45 minutes, there’s a bit more that I have to show you.”
She hung up.

“WOOOOOO!”
knockknockknock
“MR. AZUMA! IT’S 10! OPEN UP!”
shit. I opened the door.
“Since I’m in a good mood, I’ll give you 15 more minutes to pack everything and get out of here. Your key, please.”
“Right, uh… here.”
“Thanks.”
“You’re welcome!”
She raised an eyebrow and shook her head, “Just… get out of here in by 10:15.”
“Of course!”

3L Apartment Complex, Unit 318

“Well, I wish the best for you, Ryu.” Reika put her hair into a ponytail and took the pen from my outstretched hand.
“Thank you, Reika. I’m uh… thanks for showing me this place, it’s… really all I could ask for.”
“Hmhm! I’m glad you like it.”
“Oh, I really like it.”
“Heehee, I know.” She stood up, stuffed the contract into her bag and walked towards the door. “I’ll come back and check on you and the place next week, okay?”
“I’ll be waiting with bated breath.”
“Hmhm!”

The door closed with a soft thud.

“Good God.” I laid down on what was now my own floor and looked at my newfound ceiling. “Thank you, Laisei for the best goddamn realtor this side of the Pacific.”

I closed my eyes and smiled for the first time in what seemed like months.

“I’m home.”

“Well, safe to say they were right about the weather.” Laisei wiped the sweat off his forehand with the back of his hand. “But hey, I’m glad you could come with me today!” He then slapped my back with that same hand. “To be honest, I haven’t made the climb to the Fushimi Shrine in years… I’m glad these old legs still let me make it, heheh.” Laisei ran his hand through his hair, quickly fixing it and making it look as if he hadn’t made the two hour hike at all.

“Hah… Yeah… I appre--” I struggled to get the four syllables out amidst my wheezes, “--cia..te… the invite… It’s good t--to be back in Kyoto...” I suddenly remembered my old PE instructor’s advice, and threw my hands behind my head and stretched my back to get some extra air in my lungs.

It didn’t work.

I stood winded looking at the line of Shinto torii, stunned both by their simple elegance and my incredibly out of shape body.

Laisei, now completely recovered, walked to a statue of a fox with a key in its mouth. “Ooh, Azuma!” He was waving as he yelled my name, “take a picture of me with this one.”
“S--sure. Hold on a sec.” I fumbled my way through my bag, grabbed my phone, and tumbled my way over to Lasiei.
“Alright, phewf!” I huffed, “Okay! I’m good now. Ready?”
“Ready.”

Laisei smiled softly.

--click--

“How’s it look?” He already seemed to know the answer
I sighed, “Good, naturally.”
“Heh, your flattery always raises my spirits, Azuma.”
“Well sir, you know me. I’m here to serve.”
“Haha! Thanks, kid.” Laisei patted my head, “send that to me, pleaseee.”
“Oh yeah, of course.” I sent it straight away.

His phone binged in his pocket, “Mayumi’s gonna be so jealous.”
“I still absolutely cannot believe that you’re going out with May-chan, Laisei. She was like my number one crush growing up.”
“Heh, yeah… I can’t really believe it sometimes either. She’s just so… perfect. And I just, I dunno, I don’t feel like I deserve someone so great.”
“Oh please.” I touched one of the nearby torii for support, “You totally deserve someone ‘so great,’ Laisei. You’re a great guy. Hell, I owe pretty much everything to you. I can’t imagine how great you’d be with someone that you love.”
Laisei closed his eyes and smiled. He let out a quiet laugh, “You really do always know how to cheer me up, Azuma. Thank you.”

He grabbed my phone out of my hands.

“Your turn now.” he said
“Huh? Oh, uh, no… it’s uh, it’s fine.”
“Oh come on, how can you pass up a picture with a holy statue so fitting to your current situation? A Fox with a Key to Success in its mouth? Come on! It’s basically begging to have a picture taken with you!”
“Hahah fine, fine.”
“Plus, I’m sure Tsuzu’s curious how different you’re looking now that you’re a big shot pro.”
“Hm?”
Laisei only offered a chuckle in response.

I walked over to the statue.
Give me strength for tomorrow…
I gave what I thought to be my best smile.

Today’s the big day. We’re finally getting around to playing the Knights. I can’t say I picture this going particularly well, but… if I don’t have hope, then who will? Plus, I can’t go disappointing Laisei after our nice hike yesterday.

I couldn’t help but stare at the scoreboard. It was almost surreal.

Just four months ago, I was standing in the home dugout, looking upon this same field. Except back then… I was, I dunno, hopeful? That’s what’s missing, I think. I turned around to face the dark hallway of the away dugout. It was so similar to the home one, probably the exact same actually. It looked so alien. So empty.

As I thought before the game, this was the most likely outcome, but yet… I’m still disappointed. I suppose that’s good though, at least I’m feeling something.

“Oh well… At least there’s tomorrow.”

Thanks bois, it's good to be back c:
