"Was there anyone else with you?"

The question rung around in my head. There was only one acceptable answer.

"No... Just me."

I hoped to God that I presented the lie well.

"Hunh. Alright."

He seemed to buy it. Unless, of course, he was faking it.

Laisei stood up and opened the door.
"Hey, Ryu, you're a good kid. You're a great manager. Don't ruin your future with something so foolish."
"I totally understand, sir."
"Be safe out there, alright, bud? I don't want to have to look for a new manager any time soon, haha."
I laughed nervously, "I don't want you to have to look either."

We shook hands.
He brought his face close to my ear

”Keep those three out of trouble, will ya?” he whispered

I nodded, walked out the door and then down the three flights of stairs.

Tsuzumi waved to me as I walked out the front door. I gave her a quick smile and rushed out into the parking lot.

I pressed the start button of my car and sat in it with my hands tightly gripped around the steering wheel.

"Well... That could've gone a lot worse, I suppose."

I felt like I had navigated a minefield and came out with only minor scratching rather than true blue bodily horror.

"At least I still have a job..."

“AHHH” I catapulted up and out of bed.
“What the hell was that?!”

I opened my closet door and grabbed my autographed Kurihara bat.
“Give me strength, Kuri.” I said to myself

Carefully, I tiptoed down the stairs.
There was a man laying on the ground, a broken lamp next to his head. He was slowly starting to get back up.

“AHHHHHHHH” I rushed him. My best warcry served me well, as the man quickly recoiled and covered his face.

“RYU! RYU! IT’S ME!” He yelled
I stopped in my tracks, “...Kenma?”

It was my brother.

"Alright, Kenma, I've got the... Oh dear." In my doorway stood a woman with some paper in her hands.
"...Yuki?" It was my sister, Miyuki.
"Well... There goes the surprise." She said with a sigh.
"Wait, what's going on here?" I loosened my grip on my Kurihara bat.
Kenma finally regained his composure and wiped his pants off. His hands were a bit bloody from my now shattered lamp (so now his pants were as well). "We were going to surprise you with a day out! But, uh, well... Surprise!"

Kenma shook his bloodied hands in the air, seemed he didn’t care about getting blood on my walls.
“Wait, so…” I stopped him before he really made a mess, “you guys broke into my house so you could surprise me with ‘a day out’? Why didn’t you just, I dunno, call me?”
“We figured this would be more exciting!” Miyuki exclaimed
“Well, it was definitely more surprising.”

“Hey, uh” Kenma finally seemed to notice how bad his hands looked, “you got any bandages, Ryu?”
“Oh, yeah. Come on, they’re in the bathroom. I’ll help you put them on.”

“I think that guy was looking at you, Yuki.” Kenma said in between bites of his spicy tuna sushi.
“Who?”
“The chekcout guy. He was definitely looking your way. Well, unless he was looking at,” Kenma flexed, “these bad boys.”
“Hahaha! He sells noodles all day, Kenma. I’m sure he has no interest in looking at any more than he has to.” I was pretty proud with my rapier wit with that particular insult
Kenma put his arms down and pouted.
“Ohoho,” Miyuki chuckled, “he was just a kid, though. I’m sure he was intimidated by my beauty.”
“Mmm, rrright.” Kenma said, mouth full of rice. “These are really hard to eat with barely functioning hands…”

“Oh!” Miyuki thunderously popped out of her seat and fumbled through her bag. “Where are they?”
“Don’t tell me you lost them.” Kenma said, flatly
“No, no… Hold on… Ah! Here they are!” She pulled out three sheets of paper.
“Oh yeah,” I recognized them to be the pieces of paper she was holding when she walked in. “I wanted to ask you what those were.”
“Weeellllll… I hope you’re able to take the next 10 days off, Ryu. Because we’re heading to…” She shoved the paper in my face, “New Zealand!”
I was surprised, to say the least. “Well…” I started, “It just so happens that I’ll have exactly the next 10 days off. So, uh… Wow. I really wasn’t expecting this.”
“Ta-dahhhhh!” Kenma waved his hands in the air again, “Good surprise birthday gift, huh?”
“Very good! Wait, shit, we’re leaving tomorrow?”
“Yes.”
“I need to start packing!”

I ran to my room to begin the laborious task of clothes packing.

New Zealand, huh… Good thing I got suspended, heh.

“Wowww” I said

I couldn’t help it, I was in The Shire! THE Shire!

“This is unbelievable!” I yelled
“Actual people are living in these now, we should probably be a bit quieter.” Kenma put his hands on my shoulders. “I know this is really exciting for you, but we have to be respectful.”
“I know, I know. Jeez,” I pushed his hands away, “let me have a little bit of fun, why don’t you?”
“Alright, alright. Sorry, man.”

I gushed and guffawed walking around the actual place I always to be in when I was maybe nine years old. “This is incredible.”
Kenma was significantly less excited than I was, “yeah, yeah. It’s nice. Uh,” he checked his watch, “I think we should be good to go back to the hotel, now. This should be more than enough ‘alone’ time for Miyuki.”
“Heh, yeah, you’re probably right. I’m starting to get pretty hungry anyways.”

Kenma and I began our epic quest back to our hotel room.
