Before the story begins, I must tell you that this is from a manager's point of view.

November 12, 2010

It was my birthday today, and being the old man I am, I celebrated it with my family at the local Red Robin. When I arrived home after the "festivities," if you will, I decided to check for news online about baseball, because as a former player, I can't keep myself out of the game. I was about to close out the window and watch some TV when a headline caught my eye. The headline was as such:

"NPB To Add 4 Expansion Teams For 2011"

I've been a fan of Japanese baseball ever since their success in the first World Baseball Classic and have wondered about getting a job with an organization there. I barely know anything about the language, but I believe the Carp had an American manager. Perhaps this could be my ticket back into getting a job in professional baseball. The article mentioned the new teams and their GMs would be:

Fukuoka FreeAgents - Ryuji Sakamoto
Kobe Beef - Ichiro Kubo
Osaka Lightning - Hiroshi Mikitani
Nagoya Aliens - Preston Greene

The last team piqued my interest. An American GM? Very interesting, it seems like he might be the best choice to give me a job. The article linked to the team pages for all 4 teams, where it showed the contact information for their respective GM. After consulting my family, who agreed that I needed a job, but, most importantly, needed to get back into baseball because I was much happier in my playing days, I decided to send an email to Mr. Greene which went as such:

"Dear Mr. Greene,

My name is John Huitt. A quick look at my Fangraphs page shows you that I was a former pitcher for the Indians and Dodgers. I had a decent career, but the best asset I've had not only for my playing career but for my entire life is my passion for and knowledge of the game. I would like to get back into baseball, and I feel that a job working for your fine ballclub at the hands of one of the finest entrepreneurs and biggest baseball fans in the world. Being your assistant GM would be amazing, but I'll take any job right now, including a coach. I may not know Japanese very well, but I feel that I can still teach these players all I know. I can help the team succeed if you give me the chance. Please get back to me soon.

All the best,

John"

It looked weird after I sent it, hopefully my shoddy writing style doesn't screw me over. I watched a movie on TV until 12, then went to bed, anticipating a response.

What do you guys think?

I had just begun to lose faith in a response from Greene, when I received an e-mail notification on my phone. The email address was [email protected], which I immediately assumed to be Greene's address. It was, and I felt pretty good before opening it. I called in my family to read the email along with me. Greene wrote to me:

"John,

The Aliens organization feels that your talents and pedigree are wasted in a front office job that isn't already occupied by yours truly. However, we also feel that they are wasted in a job like a pitching or base coach, because you know so much about the game. We have found a happy medium with you, and that is none other than the Aliens' managerial position. Also keep in mind that we have Ø, count 'em, Ø Japanese players. More than half of our players speak English, and we have some that can speak multiple languages, who should serve as excellent translators for you. Though we most certainly WILL have a pro ready for you to handle the Japanese media.

Should you accept, we expect you and your family to be situated in Japan by the middle of December. You will meet with me and get our roster on Christmas, and you will formally meet the players a month before Spring Training starts.

This will be a great experience for you, you most certainly won't regret it.

Good luck, and most importantly, PLAY BALL!

Preston"

I responded to him, cheerfully accepting the job, which was much more than I expected. I then celebrated with my family, and told them to pack their bags. This was certainly a birthday week to remember.

November 20, 2010

I left my hometown of Aurora, Colorado and drove to Denver, where we would go to the Denver International Airport. I waited a bit over an hour before the plane finally took off for Japan. Today marks a new beginning for the family in a new country.

November 21, 2010

We landed in Nagoya, and I notified Greene as soon as we did. Turns out Greene had made arrangements for a limo to pick our family up and take us to our new home in Nagoya. I must say, the man really spared no expense! We had a month to settle in, and take care of family matters, which mainly consisted of finding a school for my youngest daughter (she's 11) and son (7). Which reminds me, I should probably tell my eldest daughter (26) that the family moved to Japan! Looks like that got lost in all the rush!

I decided to spruce up my posts with Whippletalics™. I must say, it definitely looks better.

I wanted Huitt to be from Colorado, and Aurora was the first city not named Denver that I thought of. The events that transpired there completely escaped my mind as I typed it.
