No mention of Martinez being in contention for the Triple Crown? Ok...

Oh, quit yer bitchin'. :P

I thought about it, but decided he was too far behind in the AVG race at that moment. Though there's a high chance it'll garner a mention after June.

Also, Swagger's doing excellently

Indeed. He still needs to strike out more batters, but he's establishing himself as an amazing closer.

Ok thanks, and James is proud to be fourth in AVG.

I don't know. He's forgot to send me information lately.

This is completely normal, mind you.

June 1, 2011

Pregame Notes: The first series of June has us going up against the Lightning again. They send a fellow foreigner, Jamaican-born lefty Leonard Parker, to take the hill. Parker's ERA stands at a cool 2.50, the best of all starters on the Lightning and 8th in the Pacific League. He thrives off his control, which Greene grades a B. We'll send out Geoff Taylor to take him on.

Boxscore:

Nagoya Aliens 10 - Osaka Lightning 11

Aliens' Batting
A. Henderson - 5-5, HR (10), 2 RBI, 3 R, SB, .310
A. Collins - 3-5, 2B, 2 RBI, 2 R, .265
R. Perez - 0-4, RBI, .272
E. Martinez - 3-5, 2 HR (36, 37), 4 RBI, 2 R, .360
A. Weiss - 2-5, 2B, R, K, .286
W. James - 1-5, 2B, K, .329
D. Sarfate - 1-5, 2B, RBI, .267
P. Gomez - 0-4, .333
E. Mason - 2-4, 2 R, .231

Lightning Batting
N. Takaguchi - 3-5, RBI, 3 R, .244
R. Katsuragi - 2-5, 2B, 2 RBI, R, .282
T. Muraoka - 3-3, 2 HR (11, 12), 6 RBI, 2 R, BB, .264
A. Maruta - 1-5, RBI, .286
G. Sebastien - 2-4, 2B, R, .305
J. Burnheart - 2-4, .324
N. Hisamoto - 0-4, R, .230
S. Matsuzawa - 2-4, RBI, 2 R, K, .228
I. Takei - 2-4, R, K, .273

Aliens' Pitching
Geoff Taylor - 4 IP, 10 H, 2 K, 0 BB, 8 ER, 4.77 (L, 6-2)
Bryan Wade - 3 IP, 5 H, 3 ER, 1.84
Cristobal Rodriguez - IP, 2 H, BB, 0 ER, 3.00

Lightning Pitching
Leonard Parker - 6 IP, 10 H, K, 0 BB, 5 ER, 2.91 (W, 6-2)
Tetsuya Shigetani - 0.2 IP, 2 H, 2 ER, 4.38
Yutaka Ohshima - 2 IP, 4 H, K, 2 ER, 2.65
Torahiko Kawabe - IP, H, ER, 2.51 (SV, 10)

Postgame Notes - An epic slugfest, with an unfortunate result.

The Lightning struck first in the bottom of the second, as a bloop single by outfielder Shogo Matsuzawa gave them a 1-0 lead.

In that same inning, shortstop Norihiro Takaguchi also singled in a run, then center fielder Ryo Katsuragi broke it open with a 2-run double to give the Lightning a 4-run lead. Catcher Taiei Muraoka drove in another with a sac fly, and that would be all that the Lightning would score, for a total of 5 runs in the inning.

We did our best to answer back in the top of the 3rd, as 3 straight singles by Mason, Henderson, and Collins to lead off the inning led to our first run being scored. Perez drove in our second run of the game with a sac fly, and then, with a runner on first, El Toro struck again. Martinez hit a 2-run homer over the left-center field wall to make it a 1-run game.

Muraoka struck again, however, in the bottom of the 4th, as he hit a 3-run bomb to give the Lightning a much more comfortable 8-4 lead. Yeah, you could tell it just wasn't Taylor's night out there. He hit another homer in the bottom of the 6th to give them a 10-5 lead, which would prove important because we would score 4 runs in the 7th and 8th innings to make it a 10-9 game.

They scored one more in the bottom of the 8th via an RBI single by second baseman Akinobu Maruta to make the score 11-9, which would be extremely important because in the top of the 9th, Martinez hit the first pitch he saw from closer Torahiko Kawabe over the right field wall to make it 11-10.

Kawabe, however, would bounce back from the home run and retire the next 3 batters he faced, earning his 10th save of the season.

Despite the loss, Henderson had the best game of his career tonight, going 5-5 and hitting his 10th homer of the year. And Martinez, well, it was just business as usual for him.

Poll added.

I didn't put the pace I update the log as an option because that's life's fault.

I've been following this log for a while and I joined just to say this. There is nothing wrong with this log! The only thing that could be fixed is the pace, but as you said, that is life's fault

Huh.

Well, thanks very much, to you and everyone else who gave feedback! Though you should definitely stick around instead of just making that one post, for sure.

Nothing wrong at all.

I would enjoy more player updates, but it's not mandatory.

Hans Gruber has loads of problems with this log.

For starters, not enough playing time. He is leading the team in batting average.

Secondly, he feels he is not being treated well, being misquoted, equipment managers forgetting he is part of the team, not enough good stuff to steal.

However, I have no problems with this log.

Pregame Notes: I'm deciding to go with a platoon for my DH spot. Gomez will be facing righties, while Gruber will be facing lefties.

We'll be facing a righty today, 23 year old Mitsuo Taga. Taga is an up and coming pitcher, who has struggled a bit this season with a 4.50 ERA. He has two good pitches, a vertical slider and a hard slider, and he tops out at 92 mph. Shin-Ming Chen takes the hill today, looking to avoid getting swept.

Boxscore:

Nagoya Aliens 15 - Osaka Lightning 2

Aliens' Batting
A. Henderson - 1-6, .307
A. Collins - 5-6, 2 2B, 3 RBI, R, .279
R. Perez - 3-5, HR (9), 2 RBI, R, BB, .279
E. Martinez - 4-5, 3 R, .369
A. Weiss - 2-5, 2B, 2 R, .288
W. James - 2-4, 2B, HR (6), 2 RBI, 2 R, BB, .332
D. Sarfate - 1-4, HR (9), 4 RBI, R, .266
P. Gomez - 2-3, 2B, 2 RBI, R, .364
PH - E. Robertson - 1-2, R, .250
E. Mason - 2-4, HR (6), 2 RBI, 3 R, BB, .237

Lightning Batting
N. Takaguchi - 2-4, RBI, .248
R. Katsuragi - 2-4, 2B, SB, .286
T. Muraoka - 0-4, .259
A. Maruta - 1-4, HR (13), RBI, R, E, .285
G. Sebastien - 1-3, BB, .305
J. Burnheart - 0-4, K, E, .318
N. Hisamoto - 0-4, .225
S. Matsuzawa - 1-4, 2B, R, K, .228
I. Takei - 1-3, .275

Aliens' Pitching
Shin-Ming Chen - 8.2 IP, 8 H, 2 K, BB, 2 ER, 4.32 (W, 4-3)

Postgame Notes - Another offensive outburst, this time resulting in a victory.

We set the tone for this game early, as Perez drove in the first two runs in the top of the first with a home run over the short right field porch at Blue Stadium. In the same inning, James hit a 2-run blast of his own, only this one was to the deepest part of the ballpark.

In the bottom of the third, with a 6-0 lead already, Gomez hit a 2-run single to left-center to break the game open to 8-0.

As if that already wasn't enough, Sarfate hit a 3-run homer in the top of the 5th making it 11-0. We would score one more in that inning for 4 runs total and a 12-0 lead. After the 5TH INNING! This was an offensive showcase I've never seen before in this league, and I'm glad it was our team being the beneficiaries of it.

Let's talk about Chen for a second here. Stuff-wise, he was the worst he's ever been. His fastball topped out at only 74 mph. Control, and command-wise, however, it was the best I've ever seen him. Chen got batters to swing at his pitches, and he got a ton of lazy fly ball outs as a result. It's nice to see a pitcher work so smart out there, though it does help that he has a manager that used to pitch in the MLB and a good pitching coach. He was able to make it through 8 and 2/3 innings before he needed to be taken out. Tony Scott got the final out of the game.

Not much left to say. Hopefully this carries over into our future series.

I got some news afterwards that Chen would be out for 2 weeks. They told me he was experiencing tightness in his elbow after the game. It's a tough blow to our pitching depth, but we had a guy ready in the minors to take his place for the time being. I'll be meeting him tomorrow.
