2015 NPB Playoff Recap

In the Central League, in the wild card round, the Hanshin Tigers disposed of the Hiroshima Toyo Carp easily, beating them 7-2, and 3-2 to advance to the Central League Championship Series against the number 1 seeded Yomiuri Giants, led by Yuichi Honda and Shinnosuke Abe. Meanwhile, in the Pacific League, the Bears and Hawks tied in game 1, 4-4, and the Bears won game 2, 3-1, which somehow sent them to the Championship Series against the Saitama Seibu Lions, even though the series was 1-0-1.

Next, we would move on to the Championship Series. First, we'll cover the Central League Series. In Game 1, the Giants beat the Tigers, 2-1, in Game 2, the Tigers were victorious, 5-3, in Game 3, the Giants clobbered the Tigers, 8-2, and in Game 4, the Giants would win 5-4 to move on to the Pennant Series, with a 3-1 series win. In the Pacific League, the Bears would win Games 1, 2, and 3, with the scores 10-7, 3-1, and 4-3. They would lose Game 4, unable to finish the sweep, 8-1. And in Game 5, the Bears secured their trip to the Pennant, winning 5-3. The Yomiuri Giants would face the Sapporo Bears in the NPB Championship Series.

Finally, in the Pennant, Game 1 would fall to the Giants, by a score of 13-5 thanks to excellent offensive performances by Shinnosuke Abe and Chono. Game 2 was won by the Sapporo Bears, 4-1, thanks to a complete game gem by Wilson Redd. With the series tied at 1, we would travel to Yomiuri for the Giants' 3 home games. Game 3 fell to the Giants in 11 innings, 1-0 in a pitchers duel. Moriss went all 11 innings for the Bears, but it was not enough for the victory. Game 4 was just as much of a thriller as Game 3, as the Bears won in 12 innings, 4-3. Ryosei Dan had a solo home run in the effort. Game 5 went to the Bears who put on a tremendous offensive showing, winning 11-4. Mitch Gary contributed the only home run of the game. Now the series would move back to a Blue Stadium as the Bears would attempt to win at home. In Game 6, the Bears would come out victorious, and clinch the championship once again. 6-3 was the final score.

Champions: Sapporo Bears in 6 games

2015 NPB Triennial Advanced Draft

After the first one in 2012, the NPB brought its second installment of the so-called "Advanced Draft" this year, incorporated to even out the league more by putting 14 ridiculously good prospects into the league and giving the last place team its shot to snag the best of this 14, in a regular draft, where the team with the worst winning percentage drafts first, and the previous champion drafts last. Here is our coverage and scouting reports for this year's advanced draft.

#1 Golden Eagles
SS Shichijyo, R/R, 21 years old, 3/B(71)/A(81)/A(80)/B(71)/C(65)/C(65)

Shichijyo is a ridiculously good shortstop. At only 21 years old, this kid is already a perennial 5-tool talent and I would not be surprised to see him hit .320 with at least 30 bombs and 39 steals in his rookie season, while also competing for a gold glove.

#2 Dragons
SP Hoshino, R/R, 21 years old, 153 KM/hr/C(60)/A(84)CB(4)/VSLD(3)/SHU(2)

In a fairly weak pitching class, Hoshino was the top pitching talent in the class, so the Dragons nabbed him at number 2 as they had a dire need for pitching. Hoshino can chuck the ball at a rapid 153 km/hr, and he has plus control to go with a great curveball and an above average vertical slider.

#3 Swallows
C Patrick Gainer, R/R, 21 years old, 4/B(73)/A(85)/C(62)/B(77)/C(62)/B(71)

Gainer, like Shichijyo, is an insanely good prospect that will instantly benefit the Swallows weak catching core. Gainer has insane power, and excellent contact, as well as a cannon behind the dish. We likely won't see many runners trying to steal against the Swallows this season.

#4 Fighters
SP Ibata, R/L, 28 years old, 145 km/hr/C(69)/A(81)/CUT(3)/PALM(5)

While this pick clearly isn't a pick for the future, as Ibata is already 28 years old, he is a starting pitcher that is competent of pitching at this level, and the Fighters could not pass him up as he will likely help a struggling Fighters rotation this season.

#5 BayStars
OF Wynn, R/R, 26 years old, 3/A(84)/A(85)/B(78)/E(42)/F(35)/D(51)

Wynn was not one of the youngest players in this draft class, but he sure is one of the top overall hitters. He has ridiculous contact, power, and speed that will make him one of the top DH's in the league, and the BayStars are happy to add him to an offense that already includes silver sluggers, Mima and Sosa Kenobi.

#6 Whalers
OF Lenny Urrutia, R/R, 26 years old, 2/B(77)/D(52)/S(100)/E(45)/E(42)/A(84)

Another one of the vets of this class, Lenny Urrutia should provide at least 6 solid years of outfielding for the struggling expansion team. He has insane speed that should permit him to almost lead the league in stolen bases especially combined with his amazing contact.

#7 Marines
3B Kakuzo Hirota, R/R, 22 years old, 3/B(70)/E(49)/C(60)/S(100)/B(70)/B(79)

Hirota is not a powerful third baseman, but he will provide stability in the lineup with the ability to bat .300. His defense is what makes him one of the top talents of this class. He has the best arm at 3B in Japan, and has excellent range and should be a shoe in to make any play that comes his way.

#8 Carp
SS Slade McCollum, L/R, 22 years old, 2/A(80)/D(55)/S(100)/B(70)/C(62)/C(68)

McCollum is an excellent pick here for the Carp. He has the ability to put up a .330+ average with 70 or more stolen bases, in addition to the ability to hit about 10 homers a year. His defense is also above average, so he is no liability at shortstop.

#9 Buffaloes
P Kilian Boland, R/R, 22 years old, 149km/hr/A(80)/D(58)/CB(1)/FORK(5)/SNK(1)

It is a mystery as to what role Boland will be used in, as he has the stamina to be a starter, but it will not take him extremely far in games. He does have phenomenal control though, and his deadly forkball will yield him loads of strikeouts.

#10 Tigers
DH Gianmarco Silva, S/R, 22 years old, 2/A(92)/S(100)/C(68)/F(33)G(28)/F(35)

The overall best hitter in the class, Gianmarco Silva, in the future has 60-bomb potential. Compared to a mixture of Seiichi Uchikawa and Takeya Nakamura with the bat, Silva could be a perennial slugger, hitting .350 with 60 bombs a year. However, his defense could keep him out of games played in the Central League, which is where the Tigers play, so he will need to improve his defense to not be such a liability.

#11 Hawks
SP Hirao, R/R, 22 years old, 138 km/hr/D(57)/B(73)/SFF(6)

Hirao will likely be a middle of the pack starter at the beginning of his career, but if he can add another plus offering aside from his deadly splitter, in addition to increasing his velocity, he will be ace material in the NPB.

#12 Lions
RP Ariwa Ushiba, R/R, 22 years old, 148 km/hr/B(71)/E(40)/CUT(3)/PALM(5)

Ushiba could be a top notch closer in his future, if he improves his velocity steadily. His palmball-cutter combination was deadly in college, and his rising fastball is very hard to hit. I expect him to eventually take over as the Lions closer of the future.

#13 Giants
RP Komatsu, L/L, 22 years old, 144 km/hr/C(63)/E(44)/CB(3)/FORK(5)

It appears the Giants are going to attempt to use him out of the rotation to begin the season, despite his low stamina, but it shows the confidence they have in this youngster. Komatsu has an excellent curveball-forkball combo that will complement his slow fastball excellently in the NPB.

#14 Bears
P Norihisa Akada, R/R, 22 years old, 151 km/hr/C(60)/C(66)/CB(1)/SNK(3)/CCHG(3)

Akada does not have a deadly finishing pitch yet, but he has 2 solid offerings, with plus control, velocity, and stamina, and with plenty of time to develop, Akada could develop into one of the premiere pitchers in Japan.

The Giants are once again a solid squad coming off a championship loss in 2015. In 2016, they look to bounce back with even stronger pitching, adding the rookie Komatsu as the 13th selection of the Advanced Draft. The weakness in their lineup this season is going to be at the left field spot as they start Matsumoto who has no bat. They should look to replace him with a stronger offensive option as the season goes on if they look to contend for another championship. Otherwise, they are pretty strong throughout the batting order and the rotation.

The Tigers are definitely a competitive team, and will once again compete for the #1 seed in the Central League. Their hitting is very strong, however, adding a catcher would give them one of the best offenses in the Central League. Their pitching is where they need to focus improvement via trade. Ohga is a southpaw who seems like he could be leading the rotation in the future, however he is 30 years old, so they need to find replacements, especially with the rotation being weak as it is. The bullpen is decent however. The good look for the Tigers is that their 3 key players are all under 30 years old, so the Tigers should be in this good spot for 4-5 years to come.

The Carp's squad finally made the playoffs in 2015 for the first time in awhile. This year, they look to expand on that 3rd place finish and move up into 2nd. The Carp have a great pitching staff, comparable to that of the Giants, and their lineup will be much more explosive with the addition of stolen base king, Slade McCollum. The Carp should look to improve at second base, and at catcher in order to stay in the running for the playoffs when the trade season comes around.

The BayStars could break their long playoff drought this season. Their batting order is loaded with the addition of Nobuhiro Matsuda, especially with an offense that already included 2 silver sluggers in Kenobi (arguably the best player in Japan) and Mima (arguably the best hitting catcher in Japan). The pitching rotation is also solid, led by Takasaki who is striving for a great season. The bullpen is a bit shaky however, but they have one of the best closers in the game, in Yamaguchi. Ultimately, the BayStars will probably be fighting for a 2 or 3 seed and make the playoffs for the first time in years.

The Swallows look like an overall solid team, but it will be hard to complete for a playoff spot. Their better hitters are very good hitters in rookie, Patrick Gainer, and Ishikawa, but the hitters at the bottom of the order do not compare with the league's other 7-8-9 hitters. The pitching staff is solid all-around but lacks a sure ace. Yoshinori, Akagawa, or Masubichi, 26, 25, and 27, respectively, could all develop into potential aces in the future, but the Swallows don't have a guy to lead them to instant success unless one of them breaks out. Look for the team to put up a solid ERA, but a weak batting average while competing for a 3-seed in its best case.

The Dragons aren't likely to make the jump from the Central League cellar this season. They are, however, going to be much more respectable, adding advanced draftee Hoshino to the rotation, and international free agent, Donovan Suzzer. The batting lineup is arguably stronger than that of the Swallows, but the rotation is just so much weaker, in addition to the weak bullpen aside from premier closer, Asao. The Dragons still aren't in the greatest spot for the future with 2 of their biggest stars at 31 years old, but they do have a young core of Tsuruga, Shibuya, and Hoshino who are all under 22. I see the Dragons in the cellar for a couple more years until they strengthen their rotation.

The Lions were the 1-seed in the Pacific League in 2015 because of their great hitting with Kumichi, Nakajima, Asamura, and Nakamura, and their great pitching in Wakui, Nogami, and Ohishi, but were unable to perform when it mattered in the playoffs, getting knocked off by the ultimate NPB champion, Sapporo Bears. To compete this year, they need role players in the batting order like Kurihara and Akiyama to step it up, while also needing their bullpen to be better. They did add rookie setup man, Ariwa Ushiba, in the advanced draft who has a killer palmball, one that was described as the best in college last season. The Lions should be a shoe-in for the playoffs once again, but could drop as low as the 3-seed as it is not a young team.
