Wouldn't it be awesome to be the guy that could say he is the only one who struck out Joe Mauer in his high school career?

The Cubs haven't won a World Series in a while.

The Brewers haven't won a World Series.

The Braves are the only MLB team to have won a title in three cities - Boston (1914), Milwaukee (1957), Atlanta (1995).

Lucas Harrell was the first Astros rookie since Taylor Buchholz in 2006 to record a shutout. He did it in the 2012 season (June 27) after making his debut in July 2010.

Atlanta has won 21 pennants, their first being in 1872 and their latest in 1999.

After the 1956 season, Jackie Robinson was traded by the Dodgers to the arch-rival New York Giants for Dick Littlefield and $35,000 cash (equal to $295,551 today). The trade, however, was never completed - unbeknownst to the Dodgers, Robinson had already agreed with the president of Chock Full o' Nuts to quit baseball and become an executive with the company.

Babe Ruth was 8th in homeruns in the year 1927 with 60.

The 1937 Hall of Fame class included three Cleveland teams’ alumni – Indians/Naps 2B Nap Lajoie (83.6%), Indians OF Tris Speaker (82.1%), and Spiders SP Cy Young (76.1%).

There is always some kid who may be seeing me for the first or last time – I owe him my best.” – Joe DiMaggio

The Braves' former names include: Boston Red Stockings (1871-1875), Boston Bees (1936-1940) Boston Beaneaters (1883-1906), Milwaukee Braves (1953-1965), Boston Braves (1912-1935; 1941-1952), Boston Red Caps (1876-1882), Boston Rustlers (1911), and Boston Doves (1907-1910).

On September 23, 2008, the Boston Red Sox clinched a playoff spot, their fifth in the last six years. The Red Sox' win also eliminated the Yankees from the post-season for the first time since 1993, ending the 13-year streak the team had of being in the playoffs.

The Cubs were once known as the Chicago Orphans (from 1892-1902) as well as the Colts (1890-1897). This was after they were named the Chicago White Stockings - who would play in both the National Association of Professional Base Ball Players and (although a different team) the American League.

The Braves played at South End Grounds in Boston from 1871-1914 and then Milwaukee Country Stadium in Milwaukee.

Edinson Volquez started 2008 with a 7–1 record and a 1.33 ERA in nine starts, and allowed no more than one earned run in all but one of these starts (in which he allowed two). He became the only Reds pitcher to accomplish this since 1912. On May 18, 2008, Volquez participated in a premiere pitching matchup with the Cleveland Indians' Cliff Lee, who at that point led the American League with an ERA of 0.67. It was the third time in MLB history that the ERA leaders of each league had faced each other. Volquez won the contest by a score of 6–4, improving to 7–1. Lee's loss, his first of the season, left him with a 6–1 record.

In 1936, Jackie Robinson won the junior boys singles championship in the annual Pacific Coast Negro Tennis Tournament and earned a place on the Pomona annual baseball tournament all-star team, which included future MLB Hall of Famers Ted Williams and Bob Lemon.

The 1977 and 1978 playoffs were rare in that they saw the exact same teams face in the NLCS, ALCS, and World Series, all with the same results. In 1977, the ALCS was the Yankees beating the Royals 3-2, the NLCS was the Dodgers over Phillies 3-1, and then the Yanks defeated the Dodgers in 6 in the World Series. The next year was the Yankees over Royals and Dodgers over Phillies, both in 4 games, and once again the Yankees would beat LA (both series were 4-2).

By the 2008 All-Star Break, Edinson Volquez had an 12–3 record with a 2.29 ERA and 126 strikeouts. Volquez finished the season with a 17–6 record and an earned run average of 3.21, 8th-best in the National League. Volquez threw changeups 31.9% of the time in 2008, more than any other starter. After the season, the Baseball Writers' Association of America put Volquez on the ballot for National League Rookie of the Year Award voting, an award for which he was not eligible. He subsequently received three second place votes for the award, which went to Cubs catcher Geovany Soto.

Thomas Diamond made a name for himself in 2004 in an obscure Instructional League game during which the pitching prospect tripped and fell on the mound while attempting a pickoff move. The opposing Oakland A's prospects laughed at Diamond, who then walked off the mound towards the A's dugout and told them that the next person to laugh was going to be "wearing a fastball in the temple". Diamond then threw his next pitch three feet behind the hitter at the plate and delivered nine consecutive strikes to punch out the side.

Former Dodger Davy Lopes on a WS win over their longtime rivals - The Yanks: "You don't know how sweet it is to beat New York in New York..We wanted the Yankees. If somebody has kicked your butt twice, you want the chance to kick his."

The Phillies are one of four teams in the MLB that don't display the name of their city, state, or region on their road jerseys, joining the Angels of Anaheim, Cardinals, and the Rays.

Before being called the New York/San Francisco Giants, there was a team who joined the National League (along with the Phillies) in 1883 nicknamed the New York Gothams. They were only known as that for a year until becoming the NY Giants (the first in sports, before the NY football Giants in 1925) in 1885.

The Phillies are also the only team that also displays the player's number on one sleeve except on the alternate jersey, in addition to the usual placement on the back of the jersey.

1991's World Series can be considered a "Cinderella Series" as the participants - the Twins and Braves - were the first pair of World Series opponents to face each other after finishing the previous year in last place in their division.

In an effort to give the team a fresh start and new image in the 1940s, the Phillies were renamed by ownership as the Philadelphia Blue Jays. They played under that name from 1943-1945 but it never stuck and they went back shortly after.

When the 1994 postseason was thrown out, there were division and wild card leaders. Had the last month of the season gone on, playoff contenders might have included the 52-62 Rangers (AL West leader), 74-40 Montreal Expos (NL East leader), the 58-56 Dodgers (NL West leader), and the 68-46 Braves (NL Wild Card leader).

The home team in both the 1987 (Twins vs Cardinals) and 1991 World Series (Braves vs Twins) won all 7 games.

In 1994, there was a third division (Central) added to each league and a Wild Card to the postseason. Due to a players' strike, the season was cancelled on August 11 of that year and there was no championship for the first October in 90 years.

Before the 2008 season, Rangers GM Jon Daniels traded the 2nd member of what was once dubbed the "DVD trio" (along with fellow vaunted pitching prospects John Danks and Thomas Diamond), sending Edinson Volquez and Daniel Ray Herrera to the Reds for outfielder Josh Hamilton. This trade has received positive reviews for both sides, as each player made an All-Star appearance with their new team and both teams made the playoffs in the 2010 season. Hamilton has emerged as one of the biggest stars in the game, winning the 2010 AL MVP and establishing himself as an elite offensive performer. Since the trade, however, both have moved on to different teams - Hamilton to the Angels through free agency in 2012 and Volquez via a trade to the Padres for Mat Latos.

On August 25, 2008, the Blue Jays traded C Robinzon Diaz for OF Jose Bautista in a deal that could later best be described as terribly one-sided. Diaz has bounced around 5 teams since 2008, mostly in the minors, while Bautista blossomed into an All-Star with immense power - 2010 proved to be a breakout year as he hit 50 home runs.

The Rays selected SS Tim Beckham of Griffin High School (Georgia) #1 overall in the 2008 Draft, while the Marlins picked C Kyle Skipworth of Patriot High School at #6. Beckham was rated by publications such as Baseball America as the top high school baseball prospect in the nation and described as a potential five tool player at the major league level. He's not reached the majors as of 2013 and was suspended in May of 2012 for drug abuse (his second positive test), while experts now predict that his future is as a utility infielder rather than a shortstop. This is despite him being named to the All-Star Futures Game in 2011. Skipworth is set to debut at the age of 23 in 2013 after being named Gatorade High School Baseball Player of the Year Award in 2008.

Available for the Rays to possibly pick were 3B Pedro Alvarez, 1B Eric Hosmer, SP Brian Matusz, future All-Stars Buster Posey and Aaron Crow, C Brett Lawrie, 1B Yonder Alonso, OF Aaron Hicks, 1B Ike Davis, SP Gerrit Cole, SS Lonnie Chisenhall, and SS/SP Casey Kelly. Supplemental first rounders available included pitchers Jake Odorizzi, Mike Montgomery, Lance Lynn, and Wade Miley.

David Dellucci leaving the Phillies to go to Cleveland back in 2006 or so had a big impact on multiple teams, though it wouldn't be felt until a few years later. His departure led to the acquisition of Travis D'Arnaud as compensation, who would later be traded to Toronto for Roy Halladay then recently traded to the Mets for R.A. Dickey.

A good reason the Pirates haven't been contending is really missing on some draft picks, especially in the 2000s.
Bryan Bullington in 2002 was a complete bust, considering who they could have gotten: Joey Votto (steal at 2nd round, 44 overall), Jon Lester, Jon Broxton, Brian McCann, Denard Span, Granderson, Matt Cain, Prince, Greinke, Swisher, Hamels, B.J. Upton, Josh Johnson, Brandon Weeden.. Then again, how can you blame them when the guy was ranked by Baseball America as "having the best breaking ball and best command among all college pitchers" and set records + led conferences in ERA/strikeouts/wins in college.

As was Danny Moskos (current White Sock, I guess you could say) though to a lesser degree. Pittsburgh missed out on David Price, Mike Moustakas, Matt Wieters, Madison Bumgarner, JHey, Ben Revere, Travis D'Arnaud, and Todd Frazier. Not as bad, but still a miss. There's been plenty more like.. 2001 picking John Van Benschoten (wow what a name), though there weren't too many other 1st rounders who turned out to anything big other than #1 pick Joe Mauer, #5 pick Mark Texeira, and a guy that they actually could have got instead at #8 - Hickory High School 3B by the name of David Wright (he went at #38 as a supplemental pick). There was plenty in the 2nd round though - the main ones being Ryan Howard, C.J. Wilson, J.J. Hardy, Edwin Jackson, Youk, Uggla, and a bunch of other successful MLB players. Jury's still out on Tony Sanchez, 2009 #4 overall pick. They could have had Zack Wheeler, Mike Minor, Mike Leake, Drew Storen, Aaron Crow, Tyler Skaggs, and of course.. Mike Trout.

Pittsburgh was lucky to have not missed like KC did with Hochevar or Colorado with Greg Reynolds at #1 and #2 in '06, though they weren't fortunate enough to land Longo (#3). They went with Brad Lincoln at #4, who's a good bullpen piece for the Blue Jays at the moment. However, Clayton Kershaw, Drew Stubbs, Max Scherzer, Kyle Drabek (who I suppose they could have traded for an ace like Halladay later on, just maybe), Ian Kennedy, Joba, and Chris Perez were still on the board. Not a terrible pick, but hey.

Pirates minor league starter Gerrit Cole's story is a little interesting.
The 22-year old pitched to a 8–2 record and a 0.47 ERA, while also recording 121 strikeouts in 75 innings in his senior year of high school, and was named to the USA Today All-USA high school baseball team. His other accolades in his last season at Orange Lutheran High School (California) - Baseball America rated him the 17th best prospect available in the 2008 Major League Baseball Draft, he was named the ESPN RISE Athlete of the Month for three consecutive months in March, April, and May 2010, and was the starting pitcher of the 2008 Orange County North-South All-Star Game. The Yankees selected the right-hander in the first round of the '08 Draft (#28 overall) and had planned on offering a $4 million signing bonus, above the recommended amount for the slot, but by that time Cole had decided to follow through with his commitment to play college ball for UCLA. Even the money couldn't entice Cole's agent, the infamous Scott Boras. In 2010, Cole and Trevor Bauer lead the team to the best record in the history of the school (51-17) and the second best in the USA. Cole had a 11–4 win–loss record, a 3.37 ERA, and 153 strikeouts in 123 innings; his 153 strikeouts placed Cole third in among all collegiate pitchers. Although his team lost to South Carolina in the 2010 NCAA Championship Series and his stats declined in 2011, he was selected first overall by the Pirates in the June draft of 2011 (while teammate Bauer went to the D'Backs two picks later).

Prior to the 2013 season, Cole was ranked as the 9th best prospect in baseball by MLB.com. He grew up as a fan of the Yankees, as his father raised him in Syracuse, New York, and passed down his affinity for the Yankees to his son. Cole attended the 2001 World Series where the Yanks fell to the Diamondbacks.

On March 22, 1962, the Mets and Yankees met for the first time in a Spring Training game. Former Yankees skipper Casey Stengel was at the helm for the National League's newest team (the expansion Mets) and lead them to a 4-3 win at Al Lang Field.

"If you're going to burn the flag, don't do it around me. I've been to too many veterans' hospitals and seen too many broken bodies of guys who tried to protect it." Rick Monday is well-known for grabbing the American flag away from protesters in April 1976 while playing for the Cubs (the former Marine Corps reserve still has the flag and has been offered up to a $1 million to sell it), as well as the "Blue Monday" home run and being a broadcast announcer currently. But an important side note on the center-fielder is that he was the first pick of the inaugural First-Year Player draft in 1966, by the Kansas City Athletics.

John Danks was 22 in the 2008 season. In only his second season in the bigs, he ranked among the league leaders in ERA all season and took no-hit games beyond the fifth inning on several occasions. Danks set career bests in nearly every major statistical category that year, finishing with a 12-9 record, 3.32 ERA (fifth in the American League) and 1.23 WHIP in 33 starts. He finished just short of the benchmark 200 regular-season innings, hurling 195.

Detroit's Andrew Miller became the first player from the 2006 Draft to reach the Major Leagues. He debuted in relief during a doubleheader at Yankee Stadium on August 30. He would make eight relief appearances for the Tigers during their pennant-winning season. He currently pitches in the Boston Red Sox organization and has also played for the Florida Marlins. Tim Lincecum was the first 2006 draftee to be selected to an All-Star Game. Lincecum was selected in 2008, and joined shortly thereafter by Evan Longoria, who was selected via the Final Vote. Longoria was the only one to play in the game. Longoria would later be voted Rookie of the Year. Lincecum was also the first to win a Cy Young Award (2008 and 2009) in the National League. Clayton Kershaw, 7th in the draft, went on to win the 2011 NL Cy Young Award and played in the 2011 and 2012 All-Star Game. Andrew Bailey, 6th round pick by the Oakland Athletics, became the 2009 American League Rookie of the Year and participated in the 2009 All-Star Game in St. Louis and 2010 All-Star Game in Anaheim. He is currently the closer for the Boston Red Sox. Chris Coghlan, a supplemental first round pick, was the 2009 National League Rookie of the Year. He is currently a Miami Marlins outfielder.

1B Mike Jacobs once hit 32 homers in a season but had a -2.2 WAR.

San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Kyle Williams was drafted in the 47th round of the draft by the Chicago White Sox in '06. He chose not to sign, however, and opted to play for Arizona State University and ultimately the 49ers in the NFL.

Pitching accounted for 18 of the 30 selections in the first round of the 2006 First-Year Player Draft, including the top choice, right-hander Luke Hochevar, who was chosen by the Kansas City Royals. The University of Tennessee product pitched for the Fort Worth Cats of the Independent League after not reaching terms with the Los Angeles Dodgers, who selected him in the sandwich round (40th overall) of the 2005 First-Year Player Draft.

In 2006, Jamie Walker nearly broke the major league record for most appearances in a season without a decision (no wins or losses). By September 29 (with three games left in the season), he had pitched in 54 games without being credited with a win or a loss. However, he would surrender four runs on three home runs against his former team (the Kansas City Royals) in the top of the 11th inning and was charged with a loss.

P Jamie Walker crossed the picket lines and participated in Spring Training during the 1994 strike in the MLB as a replacement player. He was banned from membership in the MLBPA and his name could not be used in MLB video games. He was also prevented fom being listed among Tigers players on their 2006 ALCS championship merchandise.

OF Tike Redman was the Orioles' starting center fielder from August 9th until the end of the 2007 season.

In 2007, Trevor Miller broke Scott Aldred's 9-year-old record for most appearances in a season without a decision.
He pitched in 76 games without earning a win or taking a loss, shattering the mark Aldred had set at 48 in 1998 as a member of the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. On August 3, 2008, Miller won a decision against the Detroit Tigers, ending this modern record at 121 games.

On October 4, 2005, John Hart announced he was stepping down as GM of the Rangers. His replacement was young assistant general manager Jon Daniels. At the age of 28 years and 41 days, Jon Daniels became the youngest GM in baseball history, which he remains currently (35 years old). Meanwhile, Hart serves as senior adviser to baseball operations for the Rangers.

A trade made in December of 2005 by the Rangers sent pitcher Chris Young, outfielder Terrmel Sledge and 23 year-old first baseman Adrian Gonzalez to the San Diego Padres for pitchers Adam Eaton and Akinori Otsuka as well as catcher Billy Killian. While Otsuka filled a valuable role as the Rangers closer, the oft-injured Eaton only pitched 65 innings with an ERA of 5.12. Dallas-native Chris Young pitched 180 innings for the Padres, racking up 164 K's and posting an ERA of 3.46. Adrian Gonzalez (considered a prized prospect) batted .304 for the Padres while hitting 24 home runs. This is generally considered the worst move of Rangers GM Jon Daniels' career to date.

On July 31, 2007, Jon Daniels made two career-defining trades as GM of the Rangers, one with the Atlanta Braves, the other with Boston Red Sox. Daniels first agreed with Atlanta Braves General Manager John Schuerholz to trade coveted slugger Mark Teixeira and relief pitcher Ron Mahay for catching prospect Jarrod Saltalamacchia. The Rangers were also able to obtain four minor leaguers in the trade. The first of these prospects, left-hander Matt Harrison, emerged as a starter in the 2009 Rangers rotation. The second of the these prospects acquired from the Braves, Elvis Andrus, now widely hailed as an elite young shortstop. Another, Neftalí Feliz, is a well regarded power pitcher who joined the Rangers bullpen in 2009. Both Andrus and Feliz were named as All-Stars in 2010, a season in which Feliz was voted AL Rookie of the Year.

Another trade made by GM Jon Daniels was sending Laynce Nix, Kevin Mench, and Francisco Cordero to the Milwaukee Brewers for minor leaguer Nelson Cruz and All-Star left fielder Carlos Lee. The trade was completed just before the trade deadline of the 2006 season. Lee was the most sought after trade target during the season and provided the Rangers with a strong bat in the middle of the lineup. Lee then signed a $100 million free agent contract with the Houston Astros, giving the Rangers the #17 and #35 draft picks (Blake Beavan and Julio Borbon, respectively) in 2007 as compensation. Cruz emerged as a power-hitting All-Star in the 2009 season for the Rangers, and became a mainstay in the lineup during the World Series years.
