MONDAY after week 1
COACH BERNHART: First off, I want to thank all of you guys for coming out today. It was a great win for the boys and I sense that we want to go back to work later today to improve upon some weaknesses and continue to build on our strengths. For example, Nate [Sudfeld] needs to take care of the ball better; he threw two interceptions, but other than that did a great job keeping us in the ballgame. One of those picks was on a route over the middle where there was no backup option other than either take the sack or try to run; that’s on us as a coaching staff to tell Nate to tuck it and either run or fall down there. From a special-teams standpoint, Mitch Ewald was tremendous for us on Saturday, but we still have some questions in the punting game and in the return game; I’ll address those later. Now, I’ll open it up for questions. REPORTER 1: Mitchell Paige left the game with an injury. Do you know anything about that? Have you sent him in for tests? COACH: Yes, we sent Mitchell to the hospital, actually during the game, for an MRI. That injury is a partially torn MCL in I believe his left knee. He’ll be out for the next seven weeks, the doctors said, and after that we’ll determine whether he can return to practice during those two weeks of practice before the Maryland game in week 10. If he can come back, that would be a great asset to our return game and he also provides depth as an inside receiver. REPORTER 2: You gave a long list of redshirts for this season, including the likes of Tevin Coleman, Shane Wynn, Cody Latimer…I could go on, but a bunch of guys that we thought would be starters for this team. Can you explain some of those decisions? COACH: We felt like we had enough depth at all of those positions where we could afford to have Tevin, Shane, Cody, T.J. [Simmons], Dan [Feeney] and all of that bunch sit out a year and focus on increasing their strength and quickness, while also getting to know the new playbook without having to go through a “trial by fire” situation…We know we’ve got some very talented players in that group who almost certainly will be starters next season, once some of these seniors get out of the way. [Laughter] REPORTER 3: Can we discuss the special teams now? COACH: Sure, I love talking about special teams. They’re underrated. Anyways, at the kicker position, obviously with Mitch Ewald we’re set there, and Griffin Oakes, a freshman walk-on, will sit out and learn the ropes of the college game from him, and be ready to take over next season after Mitch graduates. At the deep snapper, long snapper, whatever you want to call it, we have Matt Dooley, back for his third season. Josh Pericht is our backup, he’s another freshman, he’ll be redshirting this year unless something happens to Matt. At punter, we have Erich Toth, a sophomore, and Nick Campos, a freshman. Both of them have already redshirted, so we’re going to try and utilize them both based on their unique skill sets. For Erich, he’s got more of a leg, he’ll be our “boomer” type punter, the more traditional type of punter, where his main goal is to punt it fairly high and really deep. Nick, on the other hand, has more of an accurate leg, he’s going to be our directional punter, if we need to pin the opposing team close to their goal line, that’ll be his job. For example, you saw his punt Saturday in our game, we were in an odd situation at the 37 where we don’t want to kick that 54-yard field goal and potentially miss - not that I’m not confident in Mitch, but he may not quite have that kind of range - and couldn’t go for it either, on fourth-and-long. So we brought out Nick, and I think if the coverage unit had gotten there a second faster, we would’ve had them at the 1 or the 2, it was a great punt, but bounced out of the end zone unfortunately. Return-wise, we have Nick Stoner, Ricky Jones, several others that could come into the mix, Mitchell Paige before his injury. Stoner’s gonna be our guy for the time being, but he knows that we have capable replacements if he messes up, and hopefully that keeps him focused out there. REPORTER 1: One final question. Who are your players of the week for the Hawaii game? COACH: First on offense, I’m giving that one to Stephen Houston, he started off the year rolling with 104 yards and our first touchdown of the season. Defensively, [Michael] Hunter and [Ryan] Phillis both had solid games, Michael with four tackles, a pick and a pass defensed, Ryan with just three tackles, but two for losses. Special teams, I have to give that one to Mitch Ewald, he did a tremendous job, no nerves with this guy, two of four touchbacks on kickoffs as well. And for our scout team player of the week, I’m giving that award to Cody Evers, a member of our offensive line, a fourth-year junior that really came in to compete this week, we feel he could be a good player later this year or down the road next year. Again, want to thank all of you for coming out, we’ll see you again in a week! [Exits.]

Week 2 Preview
UTSA seems to be a weak team, coming off a 40-14 loss to New Mexico. They are led by tailback David Glasco II, who rushed for 92 yards against UNM. Quarterback Eric Soza threw for 2 touchdowns, 2 interceptions, and only 79 yards, going 9 for 21 passing and adding 46 yards on the ground (though he did fumble). Defensively, tackles Ashaad Mabry (8 TCK, TFL, FF) and Richard Burge (7 TCK, 3 TFL) and outside linebackers Steven Kurfehs (7 TCK) and Dalton Miller (11 TCK) lead the Roadrunners.
