NFC Wild Card Round: Giants Pull Off Miracle in Battle of Defenses
Image

From the time the tailgate lots opened, Soldier Field was buzzing. It was the Bears' first home playoff game since the 2010-11 NFC Championship Game, in which their hearts were shattered by the Green Bay Packers. This Bears team has a much different vibe. While the 2010 team was led by defensive veterans and QB Jay Cutler. This Bears team is much younger, led on defense by second-year record-setter Leonard Floyd, and an offense led by a rookie and a second-year running back. They were going up against a team led by a 36-year old QB and many other veterans. The game got off to a great start, as Mitchell Trubisky fired a 43-yard TD pass to Kevin White. The Giants responded by taking a 10-7 lead to the half. The second half was a quarterback's nightmare. Both quarterbacks threw 3 second half interceptions. 2 of Trubisky's interceptions were thrown past the Giants' 30-yardline. Eli Manning's 3rd INT was returned for a TD by Kyle Fuller, giving Chicago a 20-10 advantage with about 5 minutes left. However, Eli Manning showed his poise, marching the Giants on a late scoring drive, shrinking New York's deficit to 3. The Bears recovered the onside kick, but New York still retained three timeouts. New York once again shut down Jordan Howard, forcing Chicago to punt. Pat O'Donnell came through, pinning New York at their own 8. It took only one play to break Chicago's hearts. A medium pass to rookie TE Evan Engram turned into a 92-yard game-winner after some excellent blocking by Giants receivers. Chicago's secondary suffered a complete breakdown, the final blow to their season. Max Richards spoke after the defeat:
Max Richards wrote:
It was a total team loss. We couldn't execute our gameplan offensively. Credit to New York for stuffing the run. They showed their experience. I think this loss, while disappointing, gives us needed experience. I can assure you that Mitchell will learn from this game and come back even stronger next season.

BEARS EXTEND HICKS, MEREDITH, BARTH, AND FULLER AMONG OTHERS

Image Image Image Image

The Chicago Bears announced multi-year extensions to several key players, including defensive standout Akiem Hicks and playoff hero Kyle Fuller. A big resigning was WR Cameron Meredith, who missed the entire 2017 season due to a preseason injury. It will be intriguing to see if he can replicate his 2016 production next season. K Connor Barth had a breakout year, missing only 4 field goals and 1 blocked extra point.

2018 NFL DRAFT
Image

The Chicago Bears had a clear focus in the 2018 Draft: size and depth. This was evident in their first round pick, RT Solomon McDonald out of Auburn. McDonald's strength is run blocking, but has improved in the area of pass blocking, which was one of Chicago's biggest weaknesses in 2017. Lamont Glaud adds to Chicago's immense depth at the TE position. The remainder of Chicago's picks highlight the focus on improving depth. The only expected starter is Solomon McDonald, but the other draftees hope to fight for a spot in camp.

Drew Brees to the *team name redacted for political incorrectness*? That's a shocking move.

2018 Week 1: Let's Burn the Tape
Image

The Bears were once again humiliated on national telivision by their division rivals. Mitchell Trubiksy threw four interceptions before being benched to prevent him from further embarrassment. Christian Ponder tried his best to save the day, but the Bears could not recover from an astoundingly bad 6 turnovers. Leonard Floyd, Cody Whitehair, and Pernell McPhee will all miss multiple weeks due to injuries. This leaves Chicago's offensive line extremely vulnerable. They will look to erase the bad taste next week against Miami.

2018 Week 2: Bears Stun Dolphins on Taylor Gabriel's Missed Field Goal Return
Image
Image

It was a game to forget for Dolphins kicker Dan Carpenter, who shanked a 43-yard field goal in the second qurater that would have extended Miami's lead. Carpenter had a chance to redeem himself in the fourth quarter with a 56-yard attempt. Carpenter horrendously missed once again, allowing new Bears acquistion Taylor Gabriel to return the kick. Taylor Gabriel reminded Bears fans of Devin Hester returned the kick 108 yards to give the Bears their first victory of the season. The game was not entirely filled with positives, as Mitchell Trubisky continued to struggle, throwing one interception and only completing 4 passes before tearing his groin. Christian Ponder managed the game well enough to lead the offense down the field, but it was Jordan Howard's resurgence that led the Bears to victory. Max Richards talked about Trubisky's injury during the post-game press conference, stating:
Max Richards wrote:
It's extremely unfortunate. It hasn't been a very good stretch for Mitch since Week 17 of last season. Obviously, everyone would hate suffering their first major injury at such a time. For the next four weeks, Christian will start at QB. His mobility and command of the offense so far has been superb. He can carry us through this difficult time period.

He's so slow. With how many sacks there are in this game, he's basically unplayable.
