April 27th, 2013

"Don't you want to watch, Phil?"

My mother sat across the room from me, phone nearby, as she grabbed the remote from the coffee table. She held it up, as if to turn on the television, but waited for my response.

"No," I said, shaking my head. "We'll get the call."

She sighed and put the remote back down. Truthfully, I was merely too nervous to watch, but I would never admit that.

We sat in silence for a few minutes before I stood and walked into the kitchen and sat down in front of the desktop computer that resided next to the refrigerator.

Always inquisitive, my mother broke the silence. "What are you doing?"
"Nothing."

I opened up the browser and began killing time playing mindless games. I wasted about twenty minutes trying to beat my brother's high score on one game in particular, but failed. I blamed the nerves. From my left, I heard the TV spring to life.

"And with the 9th pick in the 5th round of the 2013 draft, the Tennessee Titans have selected-"
"Mom!"
"Sorry, sorry!" she turned it off again.

The clock seemed to slow as I did all I could to distract myself. As time passed, I became more and more nervous. I decided to take a peek at NFL.com. The Raiders had just selected a tight end, Nick Kasa out of Colorado, and the Broncos were on the clock. I quickly closed the window.

Walking back into the family room, I sat down in an armchair while my mother read. I shifted my position a few times. My mother looked up.

"Don't worry so much."

I didn't respond. A minute passed, perhaps a little less, before she set her book down and let out an exasperated sigh.

"Can we just turn it on?"

I thought for a second, then motioned for her to go for it. She quickly flipped the TV on. The Chargers were on the clock with the 11th pick of round 6. They selected a defensive end. The 49ers then used their pick on a linebacker, the Raiders on a running back. I looked on helplessly as, with each pick, my chances dwindled. The Panthers were up. I suddenly realized how tired I was. I closed my eyes. The phone rang. They shot open.

I stared at my mother, and she stared back. I hopped out of the chair and over to the phone. I cleared my throat and picked up.

"Hello?"
"Mr. Rheinhold, this is Don Gregory, head of college scouting with the Carolina Panthers. I'm pleased to inform you that you that you have been selected by our organization in the 6th round of the NFL draft. Congratulations."
"Oh... t-thank you, sir!"
"Training camp begins July 25th. Be ready."

I stood with the phone to my ear, processing the call. I looked to my mother, beamed, and dropped the phone to the ground. She congratulated me and we hugged. Soon after, my brother called to congratulate me as well. I excused myself from the room as my mother dialed everyone she could think of. I walked into the bathroom and leaned against the counter, still in a haze. I smiled.

I was a Carolina Panther.

I usually appreciate most all puns, but that's just bad...

And cool. What positions is our dear Phil?

He'll be learning the ways of the tight end under one of my favorite players, Greg Olsen.

July 25th, 2013

I arrived at the team hotel in Spartanburg, South Carolina around noon. The first practice wasn't until the following day, but we were instructed to report a day early. I wasn't entirely sure what "reporting" entailed, but my agent, Tim Maser, told me not to worry about it. My room wasn't ready, so I took a seat in the lobby and pulled out my phone. I texted my mother to let her know I'd arrived and was waiting, then played around with a couple games.

It was around 12:30 when I looked up to see another player arriving. I recognized him immediately and jumped to my feet to introduce myself.

"Mr. Olsen!"

He turned, and I extended my hand to shake.

"It's great to meet you," I said as we shook. "I'm Philip Rheinhold, a rookie."
He nodded. "I've heard of you. You play tight end, right? Coming for my job, eh?" He said with a smile.
"No, I would never!"

He laughed and excused himself to check in. I went back to where I had been sitting and texted my mom that I'd met Greg Olsen. She replied, "Who?"

I edited this post to copy the format, but accidentally submitted it rather than cutting and pasting it to a new post. :picard:

Preseason, Week Two
August 15th, 2013

Carolina Panthers (1-0) vs. Philadelphia Eagles (0-1)

Once again, I didn't get very many snaps with the first team offense (and thus with starting quarterback Cam Newton). I was in for about ten plays with him, mostly in 2-TE formations or when Olsen was moved out to the slot. Of those ten plays, seven or eight were run plays, and I was targeted once on the two or three pass plays, making an 8-yard reception. Once Derek Anderson came in, Olsen took on the backup role and I was effectively the starter. I was targeted about six times in the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th quarters, making three receptions for 29 yards while also committing two drops. I actually led the team in receptions, as our coaching staff decided to take on a run heavy approach for this game (43 of 70 plays were rushing plays). Wide receiver Ted Ginn had five more yards than me, but I was second.

From a blocking standpoint I was okay, but I got beat on my assignment causing run plays to get blown up at least a couple times. That's definitely my biggest area to improve on.

Final Score
Panthers - 23
Eagles - 7

Game Stats
4 rec, 37 yards, 2 drops

Preseason stats
9 rec, 121 yards, 1 TD, 2 drops

He accidentally edited it out. Rheinhold had 5 receptions for 85 yards and a touchdown.

Yeah, rather than redo the headings, I generally edit the last post, just changing all the info to that of the game played most recently. What I meant to do was cut and paste this edited version of week one to a new post, but instead I submitted it as an edited version of the week one post (i.e. week one became week two). When I realized what I'd done, I edited the week one post to what it says now while cutting and pasting the week two info from there to a new post.
