Eric Taylor Wins Titans Coaching Job

Coach Eric Taylor from Texas has been hired over Ken Whisenhunt to be the Head Coach of the Tennessee Titans. The coaching battle lasted three weeks with both coaches having multiple interviews with the team. At one point late this week, both teams met with practice teams, including some of the players from the Titans, in a scrimmage game. Neither one of them had stood out on defense, but in the second half Coach Taylor came out with a crazy rushing attack and took the win 38-17. That might have been the icing on the cake for Steve Fowler as Taylor was hired the next morning.

Coach Taylor was a high school football coach from 2006-2010 for two teams, both in the town of Dillon, Texas. With the notorious Dillon Panthers he was 25-5 with and 8-2 playoff record, winning one state championship trophy in two appearances. He then continued he career at East Dillon High School with a football program that started from scratch. His first season there, he went a crazy 0-8 before finding a true natural starting quarterback in Vince Howard and winning the last two games. His next season with stars Howard and starting running back Luke Cafferty Taylor took his once rattled team to a 9-1, 4-0 in the playoffs, and a state championship ring year. Vince Howard took his playing skills to the university of Ohio State and is attending camps after going undrafted, rumors going around that Taylor might bring him aboard to help settle the QB situation.

Taylor started his college coaching career at the Texas Methodist University as a QB coach. After his first season he was promoted to head coach. Two seasons of 9-2 each and a bowl game win in 2013 got him in the conversation of being a NFL coach. This will be an interesting new part of Coach Taylor's life.

I will be doing this blog from the perspective of a Journalist that has followed Eric Taylor since he coached high school.

Taylor's First Thoughts on New Team

Coach Eric Taylor had called a press conference this morning to decide on how he felt upon seeing the teams roster before tonight's preseason game versus the Green Bay Packers. According to Taylor there is many position battles to be decide this preseason. The biggest discussion for many Dedicated Titan fans is who will be the starting QB, a team cannot run without a leader. Taylor said that the Competition for the starting position is between three main candidates, Charlie Whitehurst, who is expected to take the job, and two rookies Zach Mettenberger drafted out of LSU and recently signed undrafted free agent Vince Howard out of Ohio State University. In my last post I mentioned Vince Howard as a man who won Coach Taylor his second Texas State Championship ring. At OSU he came just short of being a top ten QB in NCAA after replacing the injured Braxton Miller. In my opinion it was a complete shocker that he wasn't drafted.

One of the other two big position battles on offense are at the halfback position between Shonn Greene, Dexter McCluster, and second round pick Bishop Sankey. Even though many expect Sankey to win the battle to get many of the reps in Taylor run heavy offense, He has made it clear that both Greene and McCluster could win the job with good performances. The other battle is at the center position. Veteran Chris Spencer is catching up on young center Brian Schwenke.

On defense every postion is up for grabs except for SS, RE, and the top corner position. Those spots being filled by Benard Pollard(FS), Jurrell Casey(RE), and Jason McCourty(CB). All other spots will be up to anyone who can show the coaching staff that they can perform.

Almost every position on special teams is available as rookie kickers Nate Freese and Travis Coons battle it out. At punter, Brett Kern has the job locked down as there is no other competition. For returners, rookie halfbacks Antonio Andrews and Lache Seastrunk can make the team as specialists as the designated kick returner. Dexter McCluster will be returning punts for the team.

Prediction for tonight's game: Tennessee-14 Greenbay-35

What a game! On paper our boys were supposed to get destroyed by this team. Don't get me wrong, the Titans secondary is not terrible compared to most teams, but we're definitely not the best in the league. McCourty is showing why he is the defensive back of the future, Mettenberger has made a huge jump in the QB competition, and McCluster showed up big when Sankey wouldn't. Ghee has made the secondary CB battle talk with 12 tackles in one game. Overall, this team wasn't a team in the first half but came alive in the 4th quarter. I guess that's why they say Coach Taylor owns the 4th Quarter.

COACH TAYLOR'S COMMENTS
This was a hard fought game. Some things have been shown from players I am looking to lead this team. That's all I have to say today.
