Wilson out, Bernhart in as #iufb coach

By TIM CORMIER | [email protected] | @timmyc16

Head football coach Kevin Wilson has resigned, effective immediately, to spend more time with his family, reports freelance writer Jim Slow via Twitter (@Sloooooooowwww). His replacement will be former graduate assistant Parker Bernhart, who was given a seven-year contract. Bernhart has a bachelor's degree in sports management from Wittenberg University in Springfield, Ohio, and a master's degree in education from IU-Bloomington. He was a graduate assistant for both the basketball and football teams for the past two years after playing basketball and baseball at Wittenberg; he started 15 games his senior season in basketball, averaging 4.2 points and 6.1 rebounds, and was a key member of the Tigers' bullpen, with a 3.58 ERA over 101 career appearances. Bernhart plans to bring a balanced attack to Bloomington; he says the team, under his direction, will "go fast at times, and chew clock at others; be able to run and pass effectively; be able to defend both the run and the pass; and play hard at all times."

Bernhart followed that up by releasing the team's preseason two-deep, and a list of intended redshirts:

INTENDED REDSHIRTS:

RB: Coleman SO
WR: Latimer JR, Wynn JR
TE: Friend FR

Bernhart has decided to redshirt some very talented players (such as Coleman, Latimer, Wynn, Spriggs, Feeney, Latham, and Simmons) that could be starting this year, with a focus toward their development for the years still ahead of them. He has also started scouting prospects to bring in for next year's class: the Hoosiers' main needs are at quarterback, running back, and linebacker.

Hawaii 14
Indiana 16

Hawaii won the toss, and decided to kick off to Indiana, who started off hot on a 74-yard touchdown run by Stephen Houston in just 16 seconds. Hawaii responded with their own sub-minute drive, scoring on a 14-yard scamper by tailback Joey Iosefa. It wasn’t until 1:08 was left in the half when another score occurred, though - Mitch Ewald drilled a 31-yard field goal. Hawaii started off the second half well, with a 13-yard score from Sean Schroeder to Billy Ray Stutzmann. Indiana scored again on a 29-yarder from Ewald late in the third quarter. With 2:40 left in the ballgame, Hawaii’s Scott Harding was forced to punt for the fourth time. His punt was short, and the Hoosiers started at the Warriors’ 42. They drove an even thirty yards, and with two seconds left, Indiana called a timeout. Hawaii responded with their own, trying to “ice the kicker”. Indiana called time again to cool down Ewald’s nerves a bit. Junior Matt Dooley, reliable as ever, sent back the snap; backup quarterback Nate Boudreau placed the hold; and the senior, Ewald, knocked the 27-yard field goal straight down Broadway to win the first game with Parker Bernhart as head coach.

Week 1 (vs. Hawaii) Press Conference

NOTES: Indiana lost the toss, and is now 1-0 when losing the toss this season.
Indiana received in the first half, and is now 1-0 when receiving in the first half this season.
Indiana wore Crimson/Crimson/White uniforms (helmet/jersey/pants), and is now 1-0 when wearing the C/C/W combination this season.

MONDAY after week 1

COACH BERNHART: First off, I want to thank all of you guys for coming out today. It was a great win for the boys and I sense that we want to go back to work later today to improve upon some weaknesses and continue to build on our strengths. For example, Nate [Sudfeld] needs to take care of the ball better; he threw two interceptions, but other than that did a great job keeping us in the ballgame. One of those picks was on a route over the middle where there was no backup option other than either take the sack or try to run; that’s on us as a coaching staff to tell Nate to tuck it and either run or fall down there. From a special-teams standpoint, Mitch Ewald was tremendous for us on Saturday, but we still have some questions in the punting game and in the return game; I’ll address those later. Now, I’ll open it up for questions.
REPORTER 1: Mitchell Paige left the game with an injury. Do you know anything about that? Have you sent him in for tests?
COACH: Yes, we sent Mitchell to the hospital, actually during the game, for an MRI. That injury is a partially torn MCL in I believe his left knee. He’ll be out for the next seven weeks, the doctors said, and after that we’ll determine whether he can return to practice during those two weeks of practice before the Maryland game in week 10. If he can come back, that would be a great asset to our return game and he also provides depth as an inside receiver.
REPORTER 2: You gave a long list of redshirts for this season, including the likes of Tevin Coleman, Shane Wynn, Cody Latimer…I could go on, but a bunch of guys that we thought would be starters for this team. Can you explain some of those decisions?
COACH: We felt like we had enough depth at all of those positions where we could afford to have Tevin, Shane, Cody, T.J. [Simmons], Dan [Feeney] and all of that bunch sit out a year and focus on increasing their strength and quickness, while also getting to know the new playbook without having to go through a “trial by fire” situation…We know we’ve got some very talented players in that group who almost certainly will be starters next season, once some of these seniors get out of the way. [Laughter]
REPORTER 3: Can we discuss the special teams now?
COACH: Sure, I love talking about special teams. They’re underrated. Anyways, at the kicker position, obviously with Mitch Ewald we’re set there, and Griffin Oakes, a freshman walk-on, will sit out and learn the ropes of the college game from him, and be ready to take over next season after Mitch graduates. At the deep snapper, long snapper, whatever you want to call it, we have Matt Dooley, back for his third season. Josh Pericht is our backup, he’s another freshman, he’ll be redshirting this year unless something happens to Matt. At punter, we have Erich Toth, a sophomore, and Nick Campos, a freshman. Both of them have already redshirted, so we’re going to try and utilize them both based on their unique skill sets. For Erich, he’s got more of a leg, he’ll be our “boomer” type punter, the more traditional type of punter, where his main goal is to punt it fairly high and really deep. Nick, on the other hand, has more of an accurate leg, he’s going to be our directional punter, if we need to pin the opposing team close to their goal line, that’ll be his job. For example, you saw his punt Saturday in our game, we were in an odd situation at the 37 where we don’t want to kick that 54-yard field goal and potentially miss - not that I’m not confident in Mitch, but he may not quite have that kind of range - and couldn’t go for it either, on fourth-and-long. So we brought out Nick, and I think if the coverage unit had gotten there a second faster, we would’ve had them at the 1 or the 2, it was a great punt, but bounced out of the end zone unfortunately. Return-wise, we have Nick Stoner, Ricky Jones, several others that could come into the mix, Mitchell Paige before his injury. Stoner’s gonna be our guy for the time being, but he knows that we have capable replacements if he messes up, and hopefully that keeps him focused out there.
REPORTER 1: One final question. Who are your players of the week for the Hawaii game?
COACH: First on offense, I’m giving that one to Stephen Houston, he started off the year rolling with 104 yards and our first touchdown of the season. Defensively, [Michael] Hunter and [Ryan] Phillis both had solid games, Michael with four tackles, a pick and a pass defensed, Ryan with just three tackles, but two for losses. Special teams, I have to give that one to Mitch Ewald, he did a tremendous job, no nerves with this guy, two of four touchbacks on kickoffs as well. And for our scout team player of the week, I’m giving that award to Cody Evers, a member of our offensive line, a fourth-year junior that really came in to compete this week, we feel he could be a good player later this year or down the road next year. Again, want to thank all of you for coming out, we’ll see you again in a week! [Exits.]

Week 2 Preview

UTSA seems to be a weak team, coming off a 40-14 loss to New Mexico. They are led by tailback David Glasco II, who rushed for 92 yards against UNM. Quarterback Eric Soza threw for 2 touchdowns, 2 interceptions, and only 79 yards, going 9 for 21 passing and adding 46 yards on the ground (though he did fumble). Defensively, tackles Ashaad Mabry (8 TCK, TFL, FF) and Richard Burge (7 TCK, 3 TFL) and outside linebackers Steven Kurfehs (7 TCK) and Dalton Miller (11 TCK) lead the Roadrunners.

UTSA 14
Indiana 17

Indiana won the coin flip and elected to kick off. Wearing their “White Out” uniforms, Indiana stifled the Roadrunners’ ground game, allowing running back David Glasco II only fifteen yards on nine attempts. Indiana outgained UTSA 367 to 203 in total yards; this was mainly due to the Hoosiers having 99 rushing yards and 201 passing yards to the Roadrunners’ 16 rushing and 135 passing yards. Both quarterbacks, Nate Sudfeld and Eric Soza, accounted for one touchdown rushing and one touchdown passing. And in the third quarter, Mitch Ewald’s 20-yard chip-shot field goal turned out to be the game-winner when it was all said and done.

Week 4 Preview

NIU is 0-3, with losses to Iowa, Purdue, and Arizona State already. Indiana will be their third B1G opponent of the season. The Huskies will be without star QB Jordan Lynch (broken thumb) and starting receiver Tommylee Lewis (dislocated elbow). In Lynch’s place, sophomore Matt McIntosh has completed 41% of his passes, with one passing TD, one rushing TD and two interceptions. The NIU offense is led by senior tailback Akeem Daniels, who averages 5.2 yards per carry. He and junior Cameron Stingily (3.7 YPC) split carries evenly. The Huskies are led defensively by defensive linemen George Rainey (26 tackles, 9 TFL, 3.5 sacks) and Ken Bishop (18 tackles, 5 TFL, 2.5 sacks) and middle linebacker Boomer Mays (23 tackles). Kicker Mathew Sims is 1 for 6 on field goals, though all five misses have come from 40-49 yards.

Indiana was simply unable to stop NIU tailback Akeem Daniels in this one. NIU started with the ball after winning the flip, but no scoring happened until the second quarter, when Stephen Houston and Daniels traded short rushing touchdowns. Nate Sudfeld responded with an 18-yard touchdown strike to tight end Ted Bolser, but Huskies kicker Mathew Sims hit a 25-yard field goal and sophomore QB Matt McIntosh threw a 3-yard TD pass to Daniels to take the lead for good. Indiana’s receivers combined to drop five passes in the game.
