Game Recap

In a masterful performance on the mound, Rangers righty Andrew Cashner pitched a complete-game with 13 strikeouts, but the Texas offense was unable to muster enough to pull out a victory Monday evening.

Cashner (5-4) took the loss despite only having two major mistakes on the game — home runs allowed to second baseman Jonathan Schoop and third baseman Manny Machado — due to the Rangers’ inability to get anything going offensively. Second baseman Rougned Odor saw his hitting streak snapped at thirteen games, going 0 for 4, and the top four in the Rangers’ order (Odor included) went a combined 0 for 16 at the plate. Jonathan Lucroy was 3 for 4, including a home run in the second inning, and Joey Gallo was 2 for 3 with a walk to lead the sputtering offense.

Orioles righty Dylan Bundy (4.2 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 6 K) left after just 71 pitches with what the team called “back stiffness”. Five relievers combined for 4.1 scoreless innings to secure the win.

Also notable were two impressive defensive plays in the eighth inning. In the top half, Rangers right fielder Nomar Mazara threw out catcher Welington Castillo at third base — his sixth outfield assist of the year, and second in three games. Not to be outdone, Orioles right fielder Mark Trumbo made a sliding catch in foul territory to end the bottom half of the inning, stranding runners on first and third base.

Team news:

RHP/1B Luken Baker, the team’s fifth-round selection, signed with a bonus of $150,000. Baker, a local kid from Dallas who pitched at Texas Christian University, has been assigned to the team’s AZL affiliate. It is still unclear whether he will be developed as a pitcher or a hitter — or if the team will attempt to develop him as a two-way player following a similar path to 2017 third-rounder Jackson Lamb, who played for the AZL Rangers in 2017, making 10 starts on the mound with a 4-1 record and 4.22 ERA and 9 starts as the designated hitter hitting .296/.387/.407.

We also made a trade with Houston. Sent to Houston were RHP Tony Barnette (0-1, 7.04 in 14 MLB games; 1-1, 1.93 in 4 AAA games), LHP Joe Palumbo (2-2, 6.02 in 8 AAA starts), and OF Drew Vettleson (.242/.294/.352 at AA). Acquired were SS/CF Kyler Murray (HOU’s 8th-round pick this year), OF Derek Fisher (.305/.406/.550 at AAA), and 2B Kobie Foppe (HOU’s 33rd-round pick last year).

Game Recap

In a wild, back-and-forth game, Texas rallied late once again to take a 7-5 victory over Baltimore Tuesday night.

The game got off to an explosive start, with a four-run first inning for the Orioles against Rangers starter Cole Hamels. The Rangers countered with three runs of their own, including the fourth leadoff home run of the year by Nomar Mazara and the first of two home runs on the night by Joey Gallo.

Both starters settled down from there, though Hamels allowed another run to score in the sixth, with Baltimore catcher Chance Sisco driving in the run with a double. Hamels finished with 6 innings pitched, 5 runs allowed, and 4 strikeouts.

In the bottom of the seventh, Texas pounced on relievers Eric O’Flaherty and Darren O’Day, scoring on a sacrifice fly and Gallo’s second homer of the day — taking a 6-5 lead on the latter. Mazara would add an RBI single an inning later to give us the final score of 7-5.

The two-homer game was Gallo’s third of the year (4/18 at KC, 5/10 at DET). He now has 17 home runs on the year, tied for fourth in all of MLB (Nomar Mazara, with 20, is in second place).

Team news:

RHP Nate Riddle, our 3rd-round selection, has signed with a bonus of $150,000. He has been assigned to the AZL team. Riddle, 18, was 9-2 with a 1.70 ERA in his senior year of high school.

Additionally, RHP Vic Snuffer, our 9th-round selection, has refused to sign and will attend college instead.

This leaves us with only two picks (1st-rounder Tim Borden and 4th-rounder Mason Englert) still in negotiations, and three picks (Snuffer, 2nd-rounder Chandler Day, and 15th-rounder Ryder Green) unsigned.

Also, RHP Yu Darvish will make his first rehab start at Round Rock (AAA) tomorrow. He is expected to throw around 40 pitches.

Game Recap

In a back-and-forth affair that saw two players leave with injuries and a 52-minute rain delay, Baltimore prevailed over Texas, 7-4.

The Rangers got out to an early lead with a two-run homer by Joey Gallo, his 18th of the year, in the second inning. But the Orioles came right back and scored in the fourth on a two-run double by Chris Davis. A third run almost scored in the inning, but Drew Stubbs’ throw from center field was in time to catch Manny Machado at the plate.

Following a rain delay in the fifth, the Orioles scored two more runs in the top of the sixth inning, with a Jonathan Schoop triple and Hyun-Soo Kim single plating a run each. The Rangers came back to tie the game in the bottom half, scoring on a dropped fly ball and a Dalton Pompey single.

In the top of the seventh, Baltimore DH Trey Mancini led off with a solo home run off reliever Tanner Scheppers (0-1). Scheppers recovered to finish the inning and strike out the side in the eighth, but Texas could not score despite having runners on first and third base in the seventh. Another two runs scored in the ninth against reliever Matt Bush, and the Rangers once again failed to capitalise, this time with the bases loaded and just one out against Baltimore closer Zach Britton. The game ended when first baseman Eric Hosmer, a defensive substitute in the ninth, grounded out to the pitcher.

Also of note: Rangers infielder Hanser Alberto, starting at second base in place of Rougned Odor (rest), left with a back injury in the third. He was replaced by Andrew Romine, who was 0 for 2 with a walk. Odor later pinch-hit for Romine and singled in his only at-bat.

Orioles infielder Manny Machado also left due to an injury in the fifth inning. He was replaced at third base by Johnny Giavotella.

Team news: Infielder Tim Borden, the team’s 1st-round pick in the 2018 draft, signed with a bonus of $320,000. He was assigned to the AZL Rangers. This leaves only 4th-rounder Mason Englert unsigned.

In what quickly became a lopsided affair, the Rangers rode home runs by Joey Gallo and Nomar Mazara all the way to victory Friday night at Yankee Stadium.

After Gleyber Torres led off the bottom of the first with a home run, Rangers starter Yohander Mendez (7-2) settled down, loading the bases but striking Torres out to end the threat in the second inning, and giving up only one more run, on a home run by Gary Sanchez in the sixth.

Meanwhile, the Rangers offense went to work against Yankees right-hander Chad Green (1-6). Joey Gallo struck first, crushing a 444-foot home run in the fourth inning. Nomar Mazara gave Texas the lead (which they would not relinquish) with a 325-foot blast in the fifth, scoring two runs. From there, six insurance runs scored, including Mazara driving in another pair of runs with a double.

Worrisome, though, were the three errors committed by the team — two by Delino DeShields in left field, and one by Eric Hosmer at first base — something that has plagued the Rangers all year long. “We’re trying to prioritize defense, but guys have off days,” Finn Fletcher said postgame. “Hosmer’s had a rough year offensively, but I like what he did today, drawing two walks and beating out that infield hit. He’s been working hard every day to get back to that All-Star level, and we know we can continue to put faith in him and let him work things out.”

Team news:

RHP Yu Darvish made his first rehab start last night in Oklahoma City, pitching 3.1 innings with 2 runs allowed on 1 hit and 2 walks, striking out 2 on 40 pitches. He will make another start with a pitch count of roughly 70 pitches before possibly returning to the big leagues.

RHP Nick Martinez was optioned to Round Rock after throwing 48 pitches in relief. RHP Jose Leclerc was recalled from the Express. Additionally, OF/INF Ryan Rua was recalled to serve as the 26th man for tomorrow’s doubleheader. Since the doubleheader was scheduled more than 24 hours in advance, Rua will be eligible to play in both games, but must be optioned back to Round Rock immediately after the second game (or have another player sent down in his place).

In one of the sloppiest baseball games of all time, the Yankees rallied to take an 8-4 victory over the Rangers in Game 1 of Saturday’s doubleheader.

The slop started in the first inning, when Elvis Andrus doubled with two outs. A wild pitch allowed the shortstop, batting third with several regulars out of the lineup for rest, to move up a base. Then another wild pitch allowed him to score the game’s first run, all before Joey Gallo got a chance to swing his bat. When he finally did, it was strike three, but another wild pitch, though he was thrown out at first base.

The Yankees came right back in the bottom of the first, scoring their first run also with two outs on a Greg Bird single. In the second, the Rangers scored (with two outs, surprise), as Drew Stubbs singled, stole second, and scored on a Ryan Rua single.

The game remained scoreless until the sixth inning, when with the bases loaded, a passed ball by Gary Sanchez allowed Gallo to score from third base. Sanchez compounded his mistake by committing a throwing error in the seventh, allowing another run to score and making it 4-1 in the Rangers’ favor.

In the bottom half, Tanner Scheppers entered with a runner on second base and one out. On his first pitch, Gleyber Torres singled to left, scoring a run. The very next pitch resulted in a double play to end the inning. Scheppers’ third (and last) pitch was to Gary Sanchez, who led off the next inning with a home run to cut the lead to one run.

Alex Claudio entered and promptly got a grounder from Greg Bird — but first baseman Eric Hosmer, usually one of the most reliable defenders in the game, booted it for an error. Three batters later, the bases were loaded with one out. Right-hander Matt Bush entered and immediately walked in the tying run, then with two outs, gave up the go-ahead grand slam to Torres.

In the ninth, Jonathan Holder (??????) pitched a 1-2-3 inning, with all three putouts made by Greg Bird.

Whatever.

News:

The second game of today’s scheduled doubleheader has been moved to tomorrow instead. The Rangers and Yankees will now play two games tomorrow evening. OF/INF Ryan Rua will stay with the team and will be eligible to play in both games.

The second All-Star voting update has been released! Rangers outfielder Nomar Mazara is now the leading vote-getter in the American League, with 1,444,693 votes! Also in the running are catcher Jonathan Lucroy (2nd), second baseman Rougned Odor (2nd), and relief pitcher Alex Claudio (5th).

A trade has been made with Pittsburgh! Backup catcher Robinson Chirinos (.235/.311/.346 in 35 G) has been sent to Pittsburgh in exchange for infielder David Freese (.205/.307/.282 in 34 G), minor-league infielder Gift Ngoepe, minor-league outfielder Keegan Curtis, and cash. Catcher Jose Trevino was recalled from Triple-A, and infielder Hanser Alberto was designated for assignment as a corresponding move.

In a closely contested game, the Rangers outlasted the Yankees in the first game of Sunday’s doubleheader, 3-2, thanks to clutch hitting and an incredible steal of home.

The game got off to a quick start with Yankees shortstop Gleyber Torres driving in the first run with a single in the first inning. From there, Rangers center fielder Dalton Pompey tied the game with a solo home run. In the fourth, Joey Gallo singled, but when Jonathan Lucroy was thrown out going first to third, Gallo advanced to second. However, Lucroy was injured on the play, and had to be replaced behind the plate by rookie catcher Jose Trevino. Gallo scored on the following single by Elvis Andrus.

In the fifth inning, with Pompey at the plate and one out, Delino DeShields pulled off one of the rarest plays in baseball — the straight steal of home. Eluding the tag from New York catcher Gary Sanchez, DeShields slid home on a 70-mph breaking ball from Mike Leake.

A sixth-inning double by Jung-ho Kang scored the game’s final run. Impressive relief work from Jerry Blevins (0.1 IP), Jose Leclerc (0.1 IP), and Alex Claudio (2 IP) sealed off the win for the Rangers.

Game Recap

Facing former teammate A.J. Griffin, the Rangers pounded the Yankees by the score of 10-3 Sunday night in Game 2 of a doubleheader.

Griffin (2-3), who was released by Texas last year and picked up by New York as a free agent, only lasted 66 pitches. He was scored on five times, including a three-run homer by Ryan Rua in the second inning. Reliever Jonathan Holder later allowed four runs in the seventh, including a two-run homer to Rougned Odor.

Recent trade acquisition David Freese made his Rangers debut, pinch hitting in the seventh inning and striking out in his only at bat. He then played three innings at third base.

Utility infielder Andrew Romine made his first (but probably not last) pitching appearance of the year, recording the final out.

It is unknown whether Freese or Romine was to serve as the emergency backup catcher with starter Jonathan Lucroy out due to injury and backup Jose Trevino having already caught 6 innings in the previous game. However, Trevino was able to catch all 9 innings of this game, and will benefit greatly from a day off tomorrow.

After the game, OF/INF Ryan Rua was sent back to Round Rock, and RHP Tanner Scheppers was also optioned to the Express. No corresponding move has yet been announced.

(Update, 6/19:

The contract of catcher/first baseman Brett Nicholas was purchased from Triple-A Round Rock. Nicholas, 29, has appeared in 37 games for the Express this year, with a .311/.363/.606 slash line. He has mostly played first base, but has also appeared once as a catcher. Nicholas has played in 26 career games at the major-league level, with a .260/.325/.438 slash line across 80 plate appearances.

Also, fourth-round draft pick, RHP Mason Englert, signed with a bonus of $2.6 million and has been assigned to AZL Rangers.)

The Rangers were once again haunted by defensive miscues in a 5-1 loss to injury-riddled Washington.

The Nationals struck first, scoring on an infield single by Trea Turner. Bryce Harper led the Nationals to a narrow but thrilling victory over the Rangers in the second of a two-game set at Nationals Park.

Harper, the Nats’ star right fielder, doubled to drive in the game’s first run in the third inning, then homered two innings later. He added a defensive highlight, throwing out a runner at third base in the eighth to end the Rangers’ biggest offensive rally. Harper did commit a throwing error in the third that led to a run, though.

In the ninth, Eric Hosmer homered with two outs to make it a one-run game, but pinch-hitter Rougned Odor struck out to end the game.

Team news:

Catcher Jonathan Lucroy was diagnosed with an intercostal strain. Lucroy, who is hitting .307/.381/.508 this season as the Rangers’ starting catcher, is expected to miss 2-3 weeks, and has been placed on the 10-day disabled list. RHP Keone Kela (0-0, 3.68 ERA in 13 ML appearances; 2-0, 3 SV, 2.08 ERA in 10 AAA appearances) was recalled from Round Rock to take his place on the active roster.

RHP Yu Darvish (rotator cuff) made his second rehab start at Round Rock last night! In an 8-7 win over Colorado Springs, Darvish went 4 innings, giving up 1 run on 3 hits and 3 walks, striking out 5 and throwing 73 pitches. He is expected to rejoin the major-league club at some point in the next week.

Ariel Jurado turned in another quality start, Adrian Beltre had two hits and two RBI, and Nomar Mazara delivered the walk-off single to give Texas a 4-3 win in Game 1 of Friday’s doubleheader.

Jurado came away with a no-decision after pitching seven innings, allowing two runs on five hits and two walks, with two strikeouts, on 100 pitches thrown. He has now thrown three quality starts in four total starts since joining the big-league club on June 5, and has a 3.08 ERA and a 3.26 FIP.

Beltre doubled twice in four at-bats, including a two-run, ground-rule double in the sixth that hopped over the center-field wall and onto Greene’s Hill, scoring the first two runs of the game for the Rangers. Elvis Andrus followed with a single to make it 3-2, but a throwing error by center fielder Dalton Pompey gave the Blue Jays a run back in the eighth.

In the ninth, first baseman Eric Hosmer led off with a double into the right-field corner. Veteran outfielder Drew Stubbs entered to pinch-run, and after David Freese was intentionally walked, catcher Jose Trevino popped out foul, bringing up Mazara with two on and one out. He laced a single the other way, and Stubbs raced home from second to score the winning run.

“A thrilling moment, no doubt,” said Stubbs, who has seen his playing time decrease in recent weeks but knows there is still a role for him due to his speed and defensive range. “I’m just trying to help the team win, whether that’s from pinch-running, coming in for defense, or playing all nine innings,” the tenth-year vet from small-town Atlanta, Texas commented to reporters.

For Mazara, it was his second walk-off hit in 2018 after hitting a pair of walk-off home runs in 2017. “I was looking for a fastball, and I got one,” Mazara said with a smile. He offered the following statement through his translator: “This has been my best season yet and I’m happy that the fans keep coming out to see us. We are looking forward to winning more games and hopefully the playoffs this year.”

Right-hander Nick Martinez was called up as the team’s 26th man for Game 2.

In a high-octane Game 2 of Friday’s doubleheader, the Blue Jays downed the Rangers 8-2 on the strength of three RBI apiece from Josh Donaldson and Rowdy Tellez.

Third baseman Donaldson batted third and drove in three runs on a first-inning home run to right field, measuring 339 feet. Across the diamond, first baseman Tellez hit a solo home run in the seventh inning and added two more with a double in the ninth.

Toronto right fielder Jose Bautista also had a home run, with his also coming in the seventh inning and measuring 410 feet to dead center.

The Rangers, meanwhile, scored their runs on a double play and a bases-loaded walk. Leadoff man Nomar Mazara did his job, going 3 for 5 on the day.

With many of their regulars out of the lineup, the Rangers still managed to take down the Blue Jays, 6-3, in a rainy Saturday afternoon game.

The game started at 1:05, but did not finish until 5:56 due to a pair of rain delays — a 67-minute delay in the 6th inning, and another 17-minute delay in the 9th inning. However, the Rangers were able to overcome the delays and keep themselves in the game, specifically after starting pitcher Cole Hamels left the game in the sixth after giving up back-to-back home runs off the bats of sluggers Jose Bautista and Josh Donaldson.

“This is a situation where, maybe it’s not our best lineup, but we still feel confident in the players we put in there,” manager Finn Fletcher said. “You saw that pay off today. Jose Trevino had an RBI and threw a guy out. Brett Nicholas had two RBI. David Freese had two RBI, drew a walk in the seventh inning that led to Brett’s hit. Just guys coming in and having quality at-bats, working the count, setting themselves and others up for success.”

In a tightly contested game, Martin Perez led the Rangers to a close victory over Toronto on a windy Sunday afternoon.

Perez (5-4) turned in one of his best outings of the season, pitching seven strong innings. On the other side of the ball, second baseman Rougned Odor catalysed the offense, going 2 for 3 with two RBI, a run, and a stolen base. He drove in the game’s first run with a double to right field in the first inning, and tallied another RBI with a perfect squeeze bunt in the third. He then scored the game’s third run, racing home on a throwing error by center fielder Wily Mo Pena — in the game only because starter Kevin Pillar had been ejected in the top of the third for arguing balls and strikes.

From there, the Blue Jays clawed back to score in the fifth inning on a groundout and the sixth inning on a sacrifice fly, but the Rangers pitchers held strong, with lefties Jerry Blevins and Alex Claudio coming in from the bullpen to hold the lead. Claudio picked up his fourth save with a perfect ninth inning, lowering his ERA to a ridiculous 0.44 in the process.

In a high-octane ballgame, Texas outlasted its division rival Angels Monday night on the strength of four home runs.

The game featured seven home runs in total, with six coming with the bases empty. Dalton Pompey’s three-run, two-out homer in the fourth inning was the only exception. Nomar Mazara struck first, with his fourth leadoff bomb of the season. Also homering for Texas were Brett Nicholas and Adrian Beltre. Los Angeles got home runs from Luis Valbuena, Ramon Flores, and Mike Trout, and also scored on a Trout double in the third.

Alex Claudio recorded his fifth save, pitching a scoreless ninth after Sam Dyson pitched the eighth inning. Despite this, manager Finn Fletcher said there has not been a formal shakeup in the bullpen. “We’ve always viewed the closer role as a very fluid situation. Sam has the flexibility to pitch the ninth, pitch the eighth, come in and go one out if we need him to. Alex has been one of the best pitchers in the league this year. The situation tonight, we wanted to have Sam face the top of the order in the eighth, with four righties due up, and Alex came in and got the job done in the ninth.”

The Rangers have completed a minor trade with Boston. Right-handers Tanner Scheppers and Connor Sadzeck were sent to the Red Sox for cash considerations. Scheppers, 31, pitched in 11 games for the Rangers this season, posting an 0-1 record and 2.93 ERA. He also pitched in 12 games at Triple-A Round Rock, with a 1-2 record and 6.27 ERA. Sadzeck, 26, made his major-league debut this year, going five innings and allowing two runs in his only MLB start, a win. He also started 7 games for Round Rock, going 2-3 with a 5.92 ERA.

In a narrow win, Texas rode the strength of their bullpen to a 4-2 defeat of Los Angeles on Tuesday evening.

After starter Ariel Jurado (5 IP, 1 ER) left after throwing just 85 pitches due to short rest, left-hander Mason Melotakis took over and pitched two shutout innings. Matt Bush followed, pitching the eighth inning, and Jerry Blevins faced the first batter (a lefty) in the ninth before Sam Dyson entered to nail down his 13th save of the year.

On the offensive side of the ball, the biggest runs were scored in the bottom half of the seventh inning with Angels righty J.C. Ramirez on the mound. With two outs, Nomar Mazara doubled to right field. Eric Hosmer followed with a single to right-center, scoring Mazara. Rougned Odor then laced a triple into the left-field corner to score Hosmer from first. On the day, Hosmer, Odor, and Elvis Andrus all had two hits.

Team news:

Right-hander Yu Darvish has been activated from the 10-day DL and will start tomorrow’s contest with the Angels. In two rehab starts with Triple-A Round Rock, Darvish pitched a total of 7.1 innings with 3 earned runs allowed.

Right-hander Koji Uehara was claimed off waivers from the Dodgers. Uehara, 43, has pitched in 27 games this season, with an 0-1 record and 4.15 ERA. The team believes that his 3.75 FIP and 5.00 K/BB point to underlying signs of success, and manager Finn Fletcher plans to throw him into the middle-relief and setup mix to start.

Left-hander Tom Windle was claimed off waivers from Philadelphia. Windle, 26, pitched in 39 games at Triple-A Lehigh Valley this year, going 3-1 with 2 saves and a 0.79 ERA. He made his major-league debut in 2017, pitching in 16 games with a 5.59 ERA. He has been assigned to Round Rock.

To make room for Darvish and Uehara, right-handers Jose Leclerc and Keone Kela were optioned to Round Rock. Leclerc, 24, has pitched in 4 games since last being recalled, pitching a total of 3.1 innings with one earned run allowed. Kela, 25, pitched in just one game since his latest recall on June 20th, pitching 1.1 shutout innings with a walk and two strikeouts against Toronto on June 23.
