After making the postseason in back to back years for only the second time in franchise history, expectations are high again for the New York Mets entering the 2017 season. Despite not signing any notable new free agents to add to a talented, yet injury-prone roster, the Mets will try to build on an 87-75 2016 season in which they rallied around several late-season injuries to make the playoffs, only to lose at home to the San Francisco Giants in the Wild Card Game.

After the season, GM Sandy Alderson was able to retain many of the team's 2016 key players. Second baseman Neil Walker stayed in New York, accepting the $17.2 million qualifying offer. The Mets also brought back relievers Fernando Salas and Jerry Blevins, and outfielders Jay Bruce and Yoenis Cespedes. Bruce had his $13 million club option picked up as a safety net in case Cespedes, who re-signed to a 4 year, $110 million contract, left the team. However, Cespedes opted to stay in New York, and should again be the top offensive player on the Mets for seasons to come.

Alderson, however, let veteran starting pitchers Bartolo Colon and Jon Niese walk, feeling confident in the rotation depth with the younger pitchers the Mets already had. However, starters Steven Matz and Seth Lugo both suffered injuries in Spring Training, and both are not expected to return to the Mets until late May/early June. These injuries have forced the Mets to put Zack Wheeler into the Opening Day rotation. Wheeler, who has not pitched since 2014 due to various injuries, will carry an innings limit with him throughout the season of around 120 innings. Alderson was also hoping that third baseman David Wright would be able to play this season, but Wright was diagnosed with a right shoulder impingement, and his ability to play this season is in jeopardy.

Despite the Spring injuries, the Mets still have a talented roster that should be able to compete with the best of them. Noah Syndergaard was named the Opening Day starter and will lead the rotation, looking to build off an excellent 2016 campaign. Wheeler, Jacob deGrom, and Matt Harvey all look to return strong from injuries, and Robert Gsellman will also try to continue the success he had late in 2016. In the bullpen, Addison Reed will serve as the team's closer until Jeurys Familia is activated off the suspended list. On offense, the Mets have power bats all around, with Cespedes, Bruce, and Curtis Granderson, who all hit at least 30 home runs last season, starting in the outfield. Neil Walker and Asdrubal Cabrera both homered 23 times last season, and Lucas Duda, when healthy has been a 30 home run hitter in the past. Fan favorite Jose Reyes figures to man the hot corner until Wright is able to return.

The team’s Opening Day roster is as follows (2016 stats in parentheses):

Starting Rotation

RHP Noah Syndergaard (14-9, 2.60)
RHP Jacob deGrom (7-8, 3.04)

Atlanta Braves (0-0) at New York Mets (0-0)

Matchup: Julio Teheran (7-10, 3.21 in 2016) vs. Noah Syndergaard (14-9, 2.60 in 2016)

Game Recap

The Mets were able to pounce on Julio Teheran early, as Neil Walker (357 ft) and Lucas Duda (369 ft) both hit home runs in an impressive 6-1 victory on Opening Day. Walker and Asdrubal Cabrera also added RBI doubles, and Curtis Granderson hit an RBI single to lead New York's offensive attack against Atlanta. Teheran (0-1) was unable to make it out of the fifth inning, allowing five earned runs on five hits and two walks against five strikeouts in 4.1 innings pitched. It was a rare showing from Teheran, who in the past has dominated the Mets. However, it was Noah Syndergaard's day to dominate the opposition instead. Syndergaard (1-0) recorded a brilliant start, allowing just one run on five hits and three walks, while striking out 9 Braves in 7 innings. Jerry Blevins and Addison Reed both pitched scoreless innings to seal the win. The Mets have an off day tomorrow before resuming their series with Atlanta on Wednesday, April 5th. Jacob deGrom will start for New York against the lefty Jaime Garcia.

Atlanta Braves (0-1) at New York Mets (1-0)

Matchup: LHP Jaime Garcia (10-13, 4.67 in 2016) vs. RHP Jacob deGrom (7-8, 3.04 in 2016)

Game Recap

Despite only collecting three hits in the game, two of them by the same player, the Mets were able to rally from a 3-0 deficit to come back and beat the Braves, 4-3. Jacob deGrom struggled early, allowing 3 earned runs in the first 4 innings, including a Nick Markakis sac fly, a Freddie Freeman RBI single, and an Adam Walker 360 ft home run. However, the Mets came back thanks in large part to Atlanta's sub par defense, as two throwing errors by Rio Ruiz and Jaime Garcia in the bottom of the fourth brought home two Mets runs. In the bottom of the fifth, Jose Reyes blasted a go-ahead and eventually game-winning 355 ft two run homer off Garcia (0-1) into the Coca-Cola corner. After being given some run support, deGrom (1-0) was able to bounce back and deliver a strong 7 innings, allowing just the three runs on five hits and two walks while striking out 9 batters. Just like they did on Opening Day, Jerry Blevins and Addison Reed delivered shut out 8th and 9th innings, the latter picking up his first save of the season. The Mets look to go for the sweep tomorrow night vs the Braves, with Matt Harvey getting the ball for New York. In his first start back from another surgery on his right arm, he'll take on Mike Foltynewicz for Atlanta.

Atlanta Braves (0-2) at New York Mets (2-0)

Matchup: RHP Mike Foltynewicz (9-5, 4.31 in 2016) vs. RHP Matt Harvey (4-10, 4.86 in 2016)

Game Recap

The Mets were denied a sweep of the Braves, as Atlanta came back to score in the late innings and won 4-1. Matt Harvey did well in his start since July 4th, 2016, but left early with an injury to his pitching arm. Harvey was only able to make it through 4.2 innings, only allowing one hit and one run and walking two while striking out 6 batters. After Harvey left with the score tied, the Mets bullpen could not carry the load, as Josh Smoker, Fernando Salas, and Josh Edgin all allowed runs to put the game away. Smoker (0-1) was charged with the loss, although his run was unearned as it came via a sac fly after an Asdrubal Cabrera error. Salas came in after, and although he got out of a bases loaded jam in the 6th inning, made matters worse by surrendering a 387 ft home run to Kurt Suzuki in the 7th. Atlanta scored again with a Rio Ruiz double in the 8th off Josh Edgin. The Mets offense was stymied by Mike Foltyzewicz, who held the Mets to a run, (via a Neil Walker first inning RBI single), four hits and 2 walks while striking out 4 in 6 stellar innings. The Atlanta bullpen did their job the rest of the way through, with Jim Johnson picking up his first save of the year. The Mets received news on Harvey after the game. He was diagnosed with a tired arm, and might not be ready to make his next start, although no move has been made yet. New York stays home at Citi Field to take on the Miami Marlins in a weekend series.

Miami Marlins (2-1) at New York Mets (2-1)

Matchup: RHP Dan Straily (14-8, 3.76 in 2016) vs. RHP Zack Wheeler (possibly dead in 2016)

Game Recap

In his first start in the major leagues in over two years, Zack Wheeler gave the Mets a great outing, going 6.1 innings pitched while only allowing a hit, walk and run, all while striking out 5 batters. He left with the lead and picked up the win thanks to clutch hitting late in the game by New York. After falling back 1-0 early, the Mets struck twice in the 6th as Jose Reyes walked to lead off the inning and came around to score on a Yoenis Cespedes single. Cespedes would later score himself in the inning as Lucas Duda drove him in with a sac fly. The Mets put the game away in the bottom of the 7th as Jay Bruce hit a pinch hit double, and Wilmer Flores cracked a two-run, 347 ft home run to make it 4-1 New York. That would prove to be the final score as well, after Addison Reed picked up his second save of the season.
