Game Recap

In a wild extra-innings game, the Twins took down the Rangers in no small part due to Eddie Rosario’s two home runs.

Rosario hit a two-run home run in the seventh inning to give the Twins a 4-3 lead, and hit a solo shot in the ninth to tie the game at 5, ultimately sending the game to extra innings.

The early part of the game was not without its drama. After Brian Dozier hit a sac fly to score the game’s first run in the first inning, Jose Abreu came back in the third with a two-run bomb to left field, at an estimated distance of 444 feet. Then in the fourth inning, Drew Stubbs managed a steal of home on a botched squeeze attempt. Dozier then cut the lead in half with a solo homer to left field before Rosario’s first home run of the day.

In the eighth inning, the Rangers led off with five straight batters reaching base — though none recorded a hit. David Freese was hit by a pitch (for the second time in the game), then Drew Stubbs and Drew Robinson both walked to load the bases. Then, Jose Cardona also walked, scoring one run. Eric Hosmer pinch-hit for Jose Trevino and was promptly beaned to score another run. However, Rosario’s ninth-inning homer erased that lead.

Team news:

Jonathan Lucroy (intercostal) batted third and caught all eight innings of Tuesday’s Express loss, going 1 for 3 with two walks. He is expected to catch Wednesday’s day game before flying to meet the Rangers in Seattle, where they begin play on Thursday.

Game Recap

Rougned Odor finished a single shy of the cycle as the Rangers defeated visiting Minnesota, 7-6, in Wednesday afternoon’s getaway game.

Odor, starting at second base, was 3 for 5 with a double, a triple, a sixth-inning solo home run, and three runs scored. He was one of the key catalysts in the Rangers offense today. Jose Abreu also recorded three hits (all singles), and Drew Stubbs had two hits, including a two-run single in the fifth inning.

For Minnesota, home runs from Miguel Sano and Eddie Rosario weren’t enough to overcome a weak start from right-hander Kyle Gibson. Rosario’s homer was just his 10th of the season, but his fourth in the three-game series. The left fielder also drove in a run with a seventh-inning groundout.

League news:

The Mets and Astros have completed a trade! New York will acquire 26-year-old left fielder/second baseman Tony Kemp (.290, 5 HR, 23 RBI, 39 R), and Houston will acquire 32-year-old center fielder Lorenzo Cain (.344, 1 HR, 19 RBI, 20 R).

The Red Sox and White Sox have completed a trade! Boston will acquire 31-year-old starting pitcher Tyson Ross (4-7, 5.31 ERA, 62 K in 98.1 IP), and Chicago will acquire 29-year-old catcher Sandy Leon (.238, 6 HR, 31 RBI, 32 R).

Game Recap

Rookie hurler Ariel Jurado pitched a complete-game shutout, striking out five as the Rangers put down Seattle by the score of 7-0 Thursday night.

Jurado threw 106 pitches, allowing six hits, walking one and recording a remarkable 16 groundouts, including 2 double plays. “The bottom line was I just kept the ball down,” Jurado said. “My breaking stuff was down. Everything was down.”

Meanwhile, on the other side of the ball, the Rangers got big games from Rougned Odor (2 for 5, 3-run HR in 7th), Jose Abreu (3 for 5, solo HR in 7th), and Adrian Beltre (3 for 5, 2 doubles, RBI single in 1st). Odor and Abreu both were able to coax balls out of the yard despite a 16-mph wind blowing in from center field that kept several long flies in the yard earlier on in the game.

Jonathan Lucroy, in his first MLB game since returning from the disabled list, batted fifth, started at DH, and went 0 for 5 with three strikeouts. “My timing is still a bit off,” said the veteran backstop. “I’ll be back in form in no time.”

Game Recap

In a wild Friday the 13th game, the Mariners defeated the Rangers 12-8 on the strength of two five-run innings and a big game from Michael Conforto.

Against Rangers starter Yu Darvish, the Mariners dropped five runs in the fifth inning, then scored another five in the fifth inning with four of the runs charged to Darvish and the fifth charged to reliever Matt Bush, who allowed a three-run home run to Nelson Cruz.

Conforto, meanwhile, hit a first-inning grand slam and finished 2 for 3 with a walk, 5 RBI, and two runs scored.

The Rangers frantically tried to fight back, hitting solo home runs in four consecutive innings — Eric Hosmer in the sixth, David Freese in the seventh, Brett Nicholas in the eighth, and Joey Gallo in the ninth. Gallo’s shot off Edwin Diaz was estimated at an incredible 523 feet, making it likely the longest home run hit in the majors this season.

Rougned Odor also added three hits, including a solo home run in the third and an RBI double in the fifth.

Of note: DH Jose Abreu left in the first inning with a hand injury after sliding into second on a run-scoring double; he was replaced by Freese, but is day-to-day and could rejoin the lineup tomorrow, as the injury is said to have little to no impact on his hitting but would affect his ability to throw from first base.

Game Recap

Cole Hamels pitched seven shutout innings, Nomar Mazara drove in three runs, and the Rangers used a six-run fifth inning to propel them to a 7-1 victory over Seattle on Saturday night.

Hamels threw 98 pitches over seven innings, allowing five hits, two walks, and striking out seven. He did not allow a hit until Jean Segura’s leadoff single in the fourth inning.

Meanwhile, Seattle starter Francisco Liriano took a no-hit bid into the fifth inning, but loaded the bases with a trio of walks. Nomar Mazara doubled to right-center for the first Texas hit, scoring two runs; Rougned Odor’s two-run single and Adrian Beltre’s two-run homer made the score 6-0.

Mazara added an RBI single in the sixth, and Segura homered in the eighth against reliever Keone Kela to score Seattle’s lone run. Segura finished 3 for 4, and was a triple shy of a cycle.

Injured in yesterday’s game, Jose Abreu (hand) returned to the lineup as the DH, but went 0 for 4 with three strikeouts and was replaced late by David Freese as the Rangers emptied their bench.

Manager Finn Fletcher made an interesting comment regarding tomorrow’s game, which is the Rangers’ last before the All-Star break. “We’re going to treat this like a Game 162 or 163 situation, get real aggressive with the bench, bullpen with that four-day break coming up,” said Fletcher.

Team news:

DH/1B Jose Abreu has been placed on the 10-day disabled list due to a hand injury. Due to the All-Star break, Abreu will only have to miss six games if he returns when first eligible. Also, RHP Keone Kela was optioned to Round Rock (AAA).

OF/1B Ryan Rua was recalled from Round Rock to replace Abreu. Rua has made several trips up and down this season, hitting .176/.282/.294 in 11 games at the MLB level and .233/.321/.442 in 36 games at AAA.

1B/OF Cody Bellinger was also recalled from Round Rock. Bellinger, the preseason #39 prospect in MLB, was acquired on 7/6 in a trade with the Dodgers, and is hitting .330/.389/.537 in 88 games at Triple-A this season. He has not yet made his major league debut.

Game Recap

Josh Tomlin came one out away from a complete-game shutout, and the Rangers struggled to get anything going in a 5-1 loss to Seattle going into the break.

Tomlin exited after throwing 108 pitches with two outs in the ninth inning and the bases loaded. His replacement, All-Star closer Wade Davis, walked in a run before striking out the final batter.

Rangers starter Martin Perez struggled, lasting only four innings before giving way to the bullpen. Perez allowed four runs and a total of eleven baserunners in his short outing, throwing 86 pitches.

The Rangers’ ninth-inning rally was the only inning in which the team got more than one runner on base.

Also of note: rookie Cody Bellinger made his major-league debut, batting third and starting at first base. Bellinger was 0 for 4 with a strikeout.

Team News

— The Rangers have completed a blockbuster trade with the division rival Angels, acquiring center fielder Mike Trout (!!!!!) and three prospects in exchange for 1B/OF Cody Bellinger, OF Jose Cardona, C Jose Trevino, RHP Ariel Jurado, and OF Leodys Taveras!

The prospects acquired are: OF Shelton Schimming (LAA’s 28th-round pick in 2018), C Oswaldo Garcia, and OF Jimmy Barnes.

Additionally, RHPs Michael Kopech and Nick Martinez were recalled from Triple-A Round Rock. Kopech had 3 saves and a 1.23 ERA in AAA since being traded from the White Sox on 6/29. Meanwhile, Martinez has been up and down for the Rangers, serving in a swingman role. He will work in long relief for now, with Andrew Cashner moving back into the rotation.

Game Recap

A three-run homer in the first inning proved to be too much for the Rangers to overcome, as the visiting Indians defeated them 3-2 on Friday evening.

Steve Pearce’s aforementioned home run off Rangers starter Yu Darvish was the only time Cleveland scored in the game, but the 371-foot shot was all they needed due to the strong pitching of Corey Kluber.

Kluber pitched 6.1 innings, allowing just 2 runs on solo home runs by Mike Trout and Adrian Beltre. Trout, making his Rangers debut, was 1 for 4 as the center fielder, with the home run his only hit.

Recent callup Michael Kopech also made his team debut, striking out the side after a leadoff single in the seventh.

Team news:

The team has signed veteran outfielders Carlos Gomez, Peter Bourjos, and Chris Heisey to minor-league contracts. All three have been assigned to Triple-A Round Rock.

Gomez, 32, spent all of 2017 with the Rangers, making 67 starts in center field and hitting .262/.306/.422 with 8 home runs and 13 stolen bases.

Bourjos, 31, spent 2017 with the White Sox, making 77 starts in center field and hitting .185/.229/.281 with 3 home runs and 0 steals.

Heisey, 33, has played in 30 games with the Rockies in 2018, with a .222/.276/.433 slash line, 5 home runs, and no steals while playing all three outfield positions.

The Rangers then immediately traded Heisey, along with minor-league infielder Andrison Pena, to the Braves for two prospects: outfielder Randy Ventura and left-hander A.J. Minter.

Ventura, 21, has spent time at three levels this year, most recently playing at High-A, where he has batted .273/.366/.379 in 34 games. He will be assigned to High-A Down East.

Minter, 24, has spent time at High-A and Double-A this year, with a combined 12 saves and 4.01 ERA in 24 games. He will be assigned to Double-A Frisco.

League news:

The Brewers and Diamondbacks have completed a trade! Arizona will acquire 32-year-old second baseman Neil Walker (.250, 9 HR, 33 RBI, 40 R), and Milwaukee will acquire 34-year-old starting pitcher Zack Greinke (4-7, 5.81 ERA). Arizona will retain a portion of Greinke’s remaining contract (a total of $126.5 million through 2021).

Cole Hamels pitched a complete-game gem, leading Texas to a 4-1 victory over Cleveland on a hot summer evening.

Hamels worked through his fair share of trouble, but was helped out by a strong offensive performance, with the key hit coming in the third inning, when Adrian Beltre doubled to drive in two runs. Insurance runs came on an error in the fifth inning and a sacrifice fly in the seventh, giving Hamels a comfortable three-run lead and allowing him to stay in the game. The veteran left-hander needed 105 pitches to complete nine innings, and lowered his ERA to 5.37 in the process.

Game Recap

Danny Salazar delivered a dominating performance and was backed by Francisco Lindor en route to an 8-4 Cleveland victory on Sunday afternoon.

Salazar struck out 14 batters while only allowing 5 baserunners over 7 innings, earning his sixth win of the season. “Feels good to get the job done,” he said after the game.

Lindor had three hits, including a two-run single in the first, a solo home run in the third, and an RBI double in the fourth. The Rangers offense was slow to get going all afternoon, but home runs from Mike Trout and Ryan Rua at least made it somewhat competitive in the late game.

Game Recap

Thanks to excellent relief pitching and some clutch hitting, the Rangers snuck a 5-4 victory over the Yankees on Monday night.

New York and Texas took turns scoring in the second and third innings, and the Yankees made it 4-3 with a Greg Bird solo shot in the fifth. Texas didn’t answer until an inning later, when Joey Gallo homered with one out to tie the game. A Ryan Rua single three batters later scored the go-ahead run.

Once Texas had the lead, they did everything in their power to hold it, with four relievers combining to pitch three scoreless innings. New acquisition Erasmo Ramirez was the first out of the bullpen, followed by left-hander Alex Claudio, right-hander Matt Bush, and closer Sam Dyson, who struck out the side for his 15th save.

Team news:

The Rangers have signed RHP Pat Neshek to a minor-league contract. Neshek, 37, last pitched with the Tampa Bay Rays this season, compiling a 6.26 ERA in 17 games before being released on June 18. He will be assigned to Triple-A Round Rock.

We have also completed a trade with Kansas City, sending minor-league first baseman Ronald Guzman to the Royals in exchange for two minor-leaguers, left-hander Colin Rodgers and outfielder Dalton Griffin.

Game Recap

A pair of Nomar Mazara home runs and five shutout innings from Nick Martinez helped the Rangers overcome a slow start to defeat the Yankees, 9-8.

Rangers starter Andrew Cashner lasted just two innings, giving up seven runs on 62 pitches before Martinez replaced him. Only two of the runs were earned, as New York scored five runs in the second inning after Rougned Odor’s error extended the inning.

Martinez came out of the bullpen and kept the team in the game, scattering five hits and two walks while striking out five and throwing 92 pitches. “I did what I had to,” Martinez said after the game. “Sometimes, things don’t go your way, and that second inning kinda spiraled out of control on us, so I had to come in and do my job to keep us in the ballgame.”

Meanwhile, the Texas offense came to life with Martinez on the mound. Rougned Odor’s 441-foot blast had scored their first two runs, but it wasn’t until Mazara’s third-inning solo shot that the scoring really picked up. In the sixth, the Rangers picked up another two runs on a double play and an RBI single from Ryan Rua, and in the seventh, a two-run single from Jonathan Lucroy tied the game at 7.

Then in the eighth inning, Mazara hit his second home run of the day (and fourth hit overall) off of Yankees reliever Jordan Walden, taking the lead for the first time all game. Sam Dyson managed to get out of trouble in the ninth inning, working around two hits and two walks to escape with the save, striking out catcher Gary Sanchez with the bases loaded to finish off the come-from-behind win.

In the losing effort, Yankees designated hitter Starlin Castro was 5 for 5 at the plate.

Team news:

RHP Nick Martinez was optioned to Round Rock (AAA) after the game. RHP Jose Leclerc was recalled in his place. Also, DH/1B Jose Abreu (hand) has rejoined the team and will likely be activated for Friday’s series opener in Miami.

Catcher Eddy Rodriguez has been signed to a minor league contract. Rodriguez, 32, will report to Round Rock and is expected to serve only in a depth role.

Also, the team traded minor-league pitchers Wandy Peralta and Collin Wiles to the Cubs for cash considerations.

Philadelphia and Los Angeles have agreed to a trade! The Phillies will receive 29-year-old right-hander J.C. Ramirez (3-3, 6 SV, 2.18 ERA) and the Angels will receive 25-year-old outfielder Tyler Goeddel (.221, 13 HR, 39 RBI in AAA).

Joey Gallo drove in three runs, and the Texas bullpen threw four scoreless innings to preserve a 5-3 victory, sweeping the Yankees in the process.

Gallo drove in two runs with a single in the first inning after Mike Trout had doubled to score the Rangers’ first run. Eric Hosmer then singled to drive in the fourth run of the inning for the Rangers. Yankees DH Asdrubal Cabrera homered to pull his team within one, but the Texas bullpen refused to give in, and a seventh-inning homer from Gallo gave the Rangers a key insurance run. Gallo finished 2 for 4, and also stole a base in the win.

Right-hander Michael Kopech recorded his first save as a major leaguer, pitching a scoreless ninth while working around a hit and a walk. The 22-year-old struck out slugger Greg Bird to end the game.

Team news:

OF/1B Ryan Rua was optioned to Triple-A after the game. Rua has played in a total of 15 games at the major-league level this season, with a .204/.291/.347 slash line across 55 PA. He is expected to continue shuttling up and down as his positional versatility, power potential, and athleticism make him a valuable asset off the bench.

In a corresponding move, DH/1B Jose Abreu (hand) was activated from the 10-day disabled list. Before his injury, Abreu had slashed an outrageous .456/.500/.684 in 15 games after being acquired via trade on June 29.

Nine minor-leaguers have been released. The players released are: pitchers James Dykstra, Adam Quintana, Jeff Springs, Tyler A. Stubblefield, Christian Torres, Jose Valdespina, Kelvin Vasquez, and Mark Vasquez and infielder Gift Ngoepe.

Game Recap

A five-run second inning did the Rangers in on Friday night, as their offense came up short against Dan Straily and the Marlins in a 5-2 defeat.

Cole Hamels pitched well aside from the second-inning outburst, with runs scoring on a Miguel Rojas single, an Ildemaro Vargas two-run single, and a J.T. Realmuto two-run double. Hamels only finished 5 innings, throwing 98 pitches, but he said he felt good after the game. “Just need to limit those big innings,” he said. Michael Kopech came out of the bullpen and threw three shutout innings, needing just 29 pitches. “Michael was very strong, very efficient today. 21 of 29 [pitches] for strikes. Very good work from him today,” said manager Finn Fletcher.

Meanwhile, Marlins righty Dan Straily continued his breakout season with a quality start, striking out 8 in 7 innings of two-run ball. Joey Gallo’s second-inning home run and an infield single in the seventh from Elvis Andrus were the only plays to score runs for the Rangers, though catcher Jonathan Lucroy did have a three-hit game.

“Overall, I like what I saw, even if we did lose,” said Fletcher. “We went up against a very talented team and a very good pitcher today who got the best of us.”

Also cool fact of the day: Nomar Mazara (who doubled today) now has at least one extra-base hit in his last five games. Over that span, Mazara is 8 for 21 with 3 doubles, 1 triple, 3 home runs, 5 RBI, 7 runs scored, and 2 strikeouts.

Team news:

A trade has been completed with the Cubs! We have acquired 33-year-old right-hander Tyler Clippard, while sending 29-year-old minor-league outfielder Jared Hoying to Chicago.

Clippard has pitched in 34 games for the Cubs, going 3-0 with a 1.32 ERA and 42 K/10 BB in 41 innings. He is signed through 2020, and due to the Cubs including cash in the trade, we will only be responsible for about $10 million of the remaining contract. Clippard is currently on the 10-day disabled list with a sore elbow, but should be able to return within a few days.

Hoying had spent all of 2018 in Triple-A, hitting .233/.305/.356 in 33 games with Round Rock. He has 39 games of major-league experience, with a .217/.265/.261 slash line in those games.

On the one-year anniversary of the greatest cinematic experience of our time, Jose Urena pitched six strong innings to lead the Marlins to a 5-3 victory over the Rangers.

Urena (4-12) turned in one of his best performances of the season, allowing just one run in six innings On the offensive side, Ildemaro Vargas did the heavy lifting with an RBI double in the fourth and a solo home run in the sixth.

For the Rangers, lefty Martin Perez wasn’t able to make it out of the fifth inning. “We definitely need to have some discussions about our pitching recently,” said manager Finn Fletcher postgame. “We know the talent level we have is much higher than what we’re seeing on the field.”

For their parts, Mike Trout and Rougned Odor each homered and had two hits. The only other player to record a hit was first baseman Eric Hosmer, who was 1 for 3.

Team news:

We have completed a trade with Toronto! We will receive 34-year-old right-hander Joakim Soria, 23-year-old catcher Owen Spiwak, and cash considerations, in exchange for 35-year-old infielder David Freese.

Soria has pitched 35 games this year, with a 1-3 record, 1 save, and a 4.02 ERA. Due to a previous trade, we only owe him $1.8 million this year. Soria also has a $10 million team option, with no buyout, for 2019. He will be activated on Monday.

Spiwak has played at Single-A this year, hitting .200/.234/.233 in 26 games. Last year he had a .861 OPS in Low-A. Spiwak will be assigned to Down East (A+).

Freese had hit just .163/.359/.265 in 23 games since being acquired from Pittsburgh.

Right-hander Jose Leclerc was sent down to Triple-A. Leclerc had pitched 3 innings today, allowing 1 run with 4 strikeouts. On the season, he is 1-0 with a 2.40 ERA in 12 games at the major-league level.

Left-hander Tom Windle, a waiver claim in late June, was recalled from Round Rock. He has combined to go 4-1 with 3 saves and a 1.40 ERA at Triple-A this season.

Willie Calhoun was also recalled from Triple-A. Calhoun had hit .411/.500/.554 in 18 games since being acquired from the Dodgers on 7/6, and while he isn’t a very good defender, he is able to fill in at second base, shortstop, and left field, and will likely be used mostly as a pinch hitter and DH fill-in.
