Game Recap

A late rally from the Rangers turned an ordinary blowout into a wild and exciting finish Wednesday night at Globe Life Park.

The Angels chased starter Yu Darvish early, with a two-run homer from Luis Valbuena in the fourth, a two-run triple from Jahmai Jones in the fifth, and an RBI groundout in the fifth all being charged to the right-hander, who exited after just 73 pitches as he continues to work back from a rotator cuff injury. Andrew Cashner, who has started 13 games this season for the Rangers, pitched the last 4.2 innings of relief, throwing 76 pitches in total.

Meanwhile, Angels starter Marco Estrada carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning before catcher Brett Nicholas led off that inning with a single.

Valbuena added a two-run double in the ninth to make it 7-0, a score that sent many fans to the exits as Estrada took the mound for the bottom of ninth, seeking to finish off a complete-game shutout.

Right fielder Drew Stubbs, an eighth-inning substitute, led off with a double into the left-center gap. First baseman Eric Hosmer then reached base on an error by second baseman Wilmer Flores, and was replaced by pinch-runner Elvis Andrus. Second baseman Rougned Odor hit a fly ball to left field, but an amazing catch from the Angels’ Seiichi Uchikawa resulted in out number one — however, Stubbs raced home to score the Rangers’ first run, and the out was credited to Odor as a sacrifice fly. Third baseman Joey Gallo then stepped to the plate and belted a long, high drive to right field. Aided by the wind, the ball hooked just inside the foul pole for Gallo’s 20th home run of the year, landing some 361 feet from home plate. Designated hitter David Freese was next at bat.

“Estrada into the windup, and the 2-2 pitch… hits Freese! And he charges the mound!” called radio announcer Eric Nadel. “The benches have cleared! Freese not happy with the pitch from Estrada… and he’s letting him know!”

Freese and Estrada were both ejected and slapped with two-game suspensions from the league for their actions in the brawl.

Meanwhile, in the game, backup catcher Jose Trevino entered as a pinch runner for Freese, and southpaw Greg Mahle came in to pitch for Los Angeles. Center fielder Dalton Pompey resumed play with a single to left field, and Adrian Beltre (pinch-hitting for Delino DeShields) singled to center against closer Mike Morin to load the bases with one out.

Brett Nicholas hit a routine ground ball to the second baseman. “I thought that was it,” he said. “The game-ending double play.” Instead, the relay throw never came from shortstop Erik Gonzalez, and with Trevino scoring from third base, the score was now 7-4. Shortstop Andrew Romine then came to the plate, representing the tying run.

“Obviously, a lot of pressure in that situation. And I’ve never been known as a guy who’s gonna do too much with the bat. So I wasn’t really worried about tying the game,” the veteran infielder quipped. Romine was called out on strikes for the final out of the game. “Really, I was surprised by the call in the moment. But looking at it again, it was just a very nice slider on the black. I don’t know that I would’ve been able to do anything with it, maybe foul it off at best.”

Team news:

Outfielder Delino DeShields was optioned to Triple-A Round Rock. DeShields, 25, has started 40 games in left field for the Rangers this season, but was slashing just .216/.298/.364 and has been ice-cold in the month of June, posting just a .148 average and .483 OPS. His speed has been an asset, with 27 steals in 33 attempts, but the team hopes that some time in the minors will help DeShields fine-tune his work with the bat.

Infielder Max Muncy was recalled from Round Rock in a corresponding move. Muncy, 27, has hit .341/.491/.512 over 40 games with the Express this season, and can play first, second, and third base capably. He was part of the team’s Opening Day roster, but has just 5 MLB appearances on the season (in which he is 0 for 5 with a pair of strikeouts).

Game Recap

C.J. Cron’s triple powered the Angels to a 4-2, ten-inning victory over the Rangers to salvage a series split on Thursday afternoon.

The Angels broke the game open in the fourth inning, getting RBI singles from Adonis Garcia and Andrelton Simmons. The Rangers cut the deficit in half with Adrian Beltre’s RBI double in the sixth inning, and Max Muncy tied the game in the seventh with his first home run of the year.

The game went to the tenth inning still tied at 2, and right-hander Sam Dyson took the mound to face the 9-1-2 hitters in the Angels’ order. Andrelton Simmons singled to lead off the inning, but was taken out on Jahmai Jones’ fielder’s choice groundout. Jones then stole second and advanced to third on a groundout, and Mike Trout was intentionally walked to put runners on the corners for Cron, who tripled off the right-field wall to score the winning runs. The Rangers managed two singles to lead off the bottom half, but couldn’t muster anything else.

Rangers, White Sox Announce Blockbuster Trade

In a stunning deal, the Rangers and White Sox have agreed to a major seven-player trade.

Heading to Texas are first baseman Jose Abreu and right-hander Michael Kopech, along with cash to offset a portion of Abreu’s contract.

Abreu, 31, is hitting .334/.381/.594 with 22 HR and 56 RBI on the year. He carries a career .306/.362/.526 slash line in 5 seasons, and is a two-time All-Star, two-time Silver Slugger, and was the 2014 AL Rookie of the Year.

Kopech, 22, is from Mt. Pleasant, TX, and is a high-ceiling right-hander who can touch triple-digits with his fastball. He has made 17 appearances at the ML level this season, going 1-1 with a 5.32 ERA, but he will likely be sent to Triple-A for further seasoning after skipping the level this year. Kopech has also started 4 games at the Double-A level this year, going 2-1 with a 1.88 ERA.

In exchange, Chicago will receive five minor-leaguers: outfielders Delino DeShields and Eric Jenkins and infielders Juremi Profar, Isiah Kiner-Falefa, and Josh Morgan.

DeShields, 25, was recently optioned to Triple-A after hitting just .216/.298/.364 in 64 games with Texas. Across parts of four major-league seasons, the speedy DeShields is hitting .245/.321/.367 with 100 stolen bases.

Jenkins, 21, has hit .280/.336/.440 in 41 games at Triple-A this season. He is an excellent defender and possesses great foot speed.

Profar, 22, is the younger brother of Oakland second baseman Jurickson Profar, and has hit .333/.387/.510 in 39 games at Triple-A this season. He is able to play first, second, and third base, and is known as a good contact hitter.

Kiner-Falefa, 23, is hitting .321/.368/.444 at the Triple-A level in 2018. He can play second base, third base, and shortstop, as well as catcher. He is a slap hitter with decent speed.

Morgan, 22, has hit .321/.382/.369 in 54 games at Triple-A this year. He has also played one game at the major-league level, going 0 for 4 in his lone start. Morgan can play second base, third base, and shortstop, and is a slap hitter with an excellent throwing arm and good defensive range. He was named MLB’s #107 prospect in the preseason rankings.

L: Hughes (2-7) — 6.1 IP, 11 H, 5 R (5 ER), 1 BB, 1 K

Game Recap

Three-hit games from Nomar Mazara and Brett Nicholas and an incredible seventh-inning firestorm powered the Rangers to a 9-7 victory over the Twins on Friday night.

Every player in the Rangers’ starting lineup recorded a hit in the game, including Mazara and Nicholas with three hits each, and Rougned Odor, Jose Abreu, and Joey Gallo with two hits apiece. Mazara and Odor also added home runs, with Mazara’s mammoth blast measuring at an impressive 454 feet.

In the seventh inning, with the Rangers down 3-2, a frantic rally started against Twins right-hander Phil Hughes.

Dalton Pompey led off with a single. Elvis Andrus doubled, advancing Pompey to third. Nicholas singled to center, scoring both men. Drew Stubbs’ double scored Nicholas, though Stubbs was thrown out going to third on the play. A reliever, lefty Buddy Boshers, entered and promptly gave up a single to Mazara and a run-scoring double to Odor. Following an intentional walk to Jose Abreu, Adrian Beltre drove in a run with a single to center, and Joey Gallo singled to load the bases. Pompey (batting for the second time in the inning) grounded out to second, scoring another run. Finally, after Andrus was intentionally walked, Nicholas grounded out to end the inning.

Team news:

Left-hander Alex Claudio has agreed to a seven-year, $41.4 million extension! The contract includes guaranteed salaries through 2024 and a team option for 2025. Claudio, 26, has been the Rangers’ top relief option this season, with a 2-2 record, 5 saves, and a 0.42 ERA. In parts of five major-league seasons, he has a 13-8 record, 7 saves, and a 2.84 ERA.

Finn’s Commentary

Still doing pretty well. We’re starting to gear up for hopefully a long playoff run, though I’m not sure if we’ll make more trades before the deadline. Possibly looking to grab another bullpen arm or two, if we can find the right deal. Overall, a lot more consistency this month, and much improved performance from our starting rotation, in particular Perez, Jurado, and Mendez.

The return of Jonathan Lucroy from the DL in a week or two should only help boost our lineup and defense, with Trevino and Nicholas currently splitting time behind the plate and mostly hitting out of the nine-hole. Overall, I think we’re in a great position to succeed going into the month of July. I really like where our depth stands, in terms of our bench and the guys we have at Triple-A, but it’s possible we make some minor moves to upgrade that as well.

Game Recap

“We simply couldn’t capitalise with runners on base.”

That’s how Rangers manager Finn Fletcher explained the result of his team’s loss to Minnesota on Sunday night, in a game where the Rangers left a total of 22 men on base.

The Rangers got out to an early lead when Rougned Odor hit a solo home run to right field, and Eric Hosmer’s two-run double made it 3-0. However, the Twins came right back and scored three runs of their own on a trio of RBI singles to tie the game. Both teams had three runs and five hits in the first inning, but after that, the game slowed down for both pitchers. Twins righty Kyle Gibson left after four innings due to short rest, while Rangers starter Ariel Jurado was able to last six innings but also gave up a two-run homer to Byron Buxton (giving him three RBI on the day) in the fifth.

In the eighth inning, the Rangers loaded the bases with no outs, and Elvis Andrus drove in a run with a single to left field. However, they were unable to capitalise any further, and in the ninth inning, they also left runners on first and second base.

“Plenty of opportunities to score, but we just couldn’t take advantage,” said Fletcher. “We’ll get over it.”

S: Andrew Cashner (1) — 3 IP, 3 H, 1 R (1 ER), 2 BB, 7 K

Game Recap

In another offensive explosion from Texas, the Rangers prevailed over the Angels by the score of 13-5 Tuesday night.

Rangers starter Yu Darvish, still working back from a rotator-cuff injury that kept him out two months, pitched six innings, throwing 85 pitches before exiting. He allowed four runs, all coming in the third inning that saw a two-run homer from Mike Trout and a two-run single from Erik Gonzalez. “It was very encouraging to see Yu come back after those four runs and get out of the inning, and be able to work efficiently and give us six innings today,” said catcher Brett Nicholas, who was 2 for 5 with a home run in the eighth inning.

The Rangers’ biggest inning was the top of the fourth, when they scored a total of seven runs — six coming before an out was recorded — on the strength of a two-run Joey Gallo double, a Dalton Pompey grand slam, and a Jose Abreu RBI single.

Right-hander Andrew Cashner worked the final three innings, allowing one run and striking out seven batters to record his first save as a professional. “It’s a very different role for me,” the veteran said. “I’m used to starting, but this helps take the pressure off and I’m able to just go out and let loose and pound the zone and help us win some ballgames in a different way.”

Game Recap

In a low-scoring affair, the fireworks came after the game as the Angels toppled the Rangers 3-1 on July 4th.

Elvis Andrus drove in the game’s first run — and Texas’s only run of the game — with a bases-loaded groundout in the second inning. Jefry Marte answered with a solo shot to left in the bottom half, and an Andrelton Simmons double gave the Angels the lead for good. Anthony Recker added an RBI double in the sixth to make it 3-1.

Rangers lefty Cole Hamels (7-4) exited after 5.2 innings (92 pitches) due to back spasms. He is not expected to miss any starts.

Team news:

The team has come to terms with international free agent Luis Torrez, an infielder from the Dominican Republic! Details were not announced.

Game Recap

“A comedy of errors” — that’s how Rangers manager Finn Fletcher described his team’s poor play in Thursday night’s blowout loss to the Angels.

For the game, the Rangers committed three errors, threw two wild pitches, were caught stealing twice, and served up two home runs. Two of the errors were committed by second baseman Rougned Odor, who was later pulled in the eighth inning.

Utility infielder Andrew Romine pitched a shutout eighth inning, working around a hit and a walk, but it wasn’t enough to reverse his fate, as he was designated for assignment by the team later in the evening. 26-year-old infielder/outfielder Drew Robinson was recalled from Round Rock (AAA) to provide depth.

Big Trade Completed With Los Angeles

In a stunning trade finalised late Friday night, the Rangers and Dodgers made a nine-player swap involving several hot prospects.

The Rangers will acquire the following players: 28-year-old infielder Erisbel Arruebarrena, 22-year-old first baseman/outfielder Cody Bellinger, 23-year-old second baseman Willie Calhoun, and 23-year-old right-handed pitcher Walker Buehler, in addition to cash to offset Arruebarrena’s $5 million salary.

Arruebarrena was signed in 2014 to a five-year deal that will go down as one of the least productive signings in Dodger history. The native of Cienfuegos, Cuba played in only 22 major-league games for Los Angeles, hitting .195/.255/.220 in a late 2014 cameo. He has spent all of 2018 at Tulsa (AA), hitting .210/.262/.322. The Rangers are expected to place him on release waivers.

Bellinger, the son of former major-leaguer Clay Bellinger, was named the #33 prospect in 2017 and the #39 prospect in 2018 by MLB.com. He plays an above-average first base, but with Eric Hosmer (and Jose Abreu) blocking his path, Bellinger is likely to spend most of his time in the outfield. He has hit .328/.387/.548 in 80 games at Oklahoma City (AAA) this season, and has not yet made his MLB debut. Bellinger is expected to join Round Rock (AAA) by the end of the weekend.

Calhoun, a member of the 2017 World Series champion Dodgers, is also a highly regarded prospect, albeit one outside of the league’s top 100. He played in 32 games for the Dodgers last year with a .184/.226/.245 slash line, but has taken a step forward in 2018, hitting .242/.316/.400 in 34 major-league games and .341/.417/.635 in 22 games for Oklahoma City. Calhoun is a below-average defensive second baseman, and could improve his chances of getting called up by working in the outfield (where he has never played as a professional). Calhoun is also expected to join Round Rock.

Buehler is a promising young righty who has been bothered by arm issues throughout his career. He has pitched in 34 games, recording 11 saves with a 6.75 ERA for Rancho Cucamonga (A+) and 9 saves with a 3.38 ERA for Tulsa (AA). Buehler is expected to be assigned to Frisco (AA) and work out of the bullpen.

The Dodgers will acquire the following players: 43-year-old right-handed pitcher Koji Uehara, 25-year-old outfielder Dalton Pompey, 23-year-old first baseman Ben Miller, 27-year-old right-handed pitcher Tyler Wagner, and 22-year-old catcher Melvin Novoa.

Uehara was recently claimed off waivers by Texas (from the Dodgers ??????), and only made three appearances with the team, though apparently his 1:4 K/BB ratio in those three innings pitched was enough for the team to send him packing. He has posted a combined 4.03 ERA in 30 games, with a 31:10 K/BB in 29 innings.

Pompey had been a major surprise for the Rangers, starting 53 games and becoming the team’s starting center fielder due to a .274/.340/.435 slash line and excellent defense in the outfield after being claimed from Toronto.

Miller came flying through the Texas system after being picked in the 21st round in the 2017 draft, making his ML debut with a 5-game cameo in late May where he hit just .125/.176/.188. He was then demoted to Round Rock, where he hit .182/.224/.309 in 14 games before going back to Frisco, where he has put up a .393/.455/.708 line in 22 games this season.

Wagner is a veteran right-hander who has bounced around the league recently. He has pitched in 10 games (all relief appearances) this year for Round Rock, with an 0-2 record, 4.82 ERA, and 27:21 K/BB in 28 innings. In six career ML games (three starts), Wagner has a 1-2 record and 4.94 ERA.

Novoa, a native of Nicaragua, was playing in the DSL, and had hit .320/.455/.640 in 19 games for the DSL Rangers (1).

As corresponding moves, the Rangers recalled right-hander Preston Claiborne and purchased the contract of outfielder Jose Cardona from Round Rock.

Claiborne, 30, has pitched in 19 games at Triple-A with a 2-2 record, 4 saves, and a 2.28 ERA. He has also made four major-league appearances, with a 1.93 ERA and 10:4 K/BB in 9.1 innings pitched.

Cardona, 24, has played in 54 games at Triple-A with a .325/.377/.431 slash line. He is viewed as the team’s center fielder of the future, combining good speed and defense with a well-rounded offensive game.

Atlanta Braves (41-38) at Texas Rangers (48-32)

Matchup: RHP Aaron Blair (4-7, 5.38) vs. LHP Yohander Mendez (9-3, 3.55)

Linescore

ATL…1-1-0-0-0-0-0-0-0…2-8-0

L: Blair (4-8) — 5 IP, 5 H, 4 R (4 ER), 5 BB, 4 K
S: Alex Claudio (6) — 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K

Game Recap

In a low-scoring but exciting game, Texas outlasted Atlanta Friday night on the strength of its bullpen and big hits from some unlikely sources — the 7, 8, and 9 hitters in the lineup.

After lefty Yohander Mendez left with just four innings on his ledger (94 pitches), right-hander Andrew Cashner took over and fired three shutout innings, hitting up to 102 on the radar gun and keeping the Rangers in the game while their offense took over.

In the fourth inning, Drew Robinson doubled to drive in the Rangers’ first run, and Jose Cardona followed with a clean hit to left-center to collect the first hit and RBI of his major-league career. Both players were called up after yesterday’s big trade.

Meanwhile, catcher Brett Nicholas took advantage of a big opportunity in the sixth inning, as Braves starter Aaron Blair walked the bases full (throwing eleven straight balls to begin the inning) for the lefty, who promptly hit a single to center against reliever Akeel Morris, scoring two.

From there, left-handed relievers Mason Melotakis and Alex Claudio pitched shutout eighth and ninth innings, respectively, with Melotakis picking up his first hold and Claudio his sixth save of the year.

Team news:

International free agent Juan Jacobo, a right-handed pitcher from Venezuela, has agreed to terms with the Rangers. Details of the contract were not announced.

Division rivals Houston and Los Angeles agreed to a trade. Houston will acquire right-hander Mike Morin, while Los Angeles will receive catcher Evan Gattis. Morin, 27, is 2-8 with 13 saves and a 5.53 ERA on the season. Gattis, 31, is hitting .216 with 6 home runs and 14 RBI on the year.

Game Recap

It wasn’t the Fourth of July, but the Rangers still had plenty of fireworks left to shoot off during Saturday’s afternoon matchup with the visiting Braves.

The two teams combined to hit five home runs, with solo shots accounting for all three of Texas’s runs. Rougned Odor homered in the fourth, and Elvis Andrus and Jose Abreu both homered in a ninth-inning rally. Rio Ruiz and Ozzie Albies homered for the Braves, who were led on the mound by right-hander Mike Foltynewicz, who lowered his season ERA to 2.99.

“I just tried to attack the bottom of the zone,” said Foltynewicz after recording 12 ground-ball outs in the game, including 1 double play.

Also of note: Rangers left-hander Jerry Blevins was injured on the final pitch of the eighth inning. He is reportedly dealing with a finger injury but will only be out a day or two.

Team news: RHP Preston Claiborne was designated for assignment after pitching three innings of relief. RHP Nick Martinez was recalled from Round Rock (AAA) to serve in long relief (due to Andrew Cashner being used two days ago).

Also, catcher Jonathan Lucroy (intercostal strain) will begin his rehab assignment with Round Rock tomorrow! He is expected to DH on Sunday, take Monday off, then catch Tuesday and Wednesday before possibly returning in Seattle.

Also, the latest All-Star voting update is out! Representing the Rangers among top finishers are:

RF Nomar Mazara (overall leader with 3,289,697 votes)
C Jonathan Lucroy (2nd)
1B Jose Abreu (1st)
2B Rougned Odor (2nd)
RP Alex Claudio (5th)

Also, INF/OF Andrew Romine has been outrighted to Round Rock.

Game Recap

In a thorough team victory Sunday afternoon, the Rangers rode big games from Joey Gallo and Yu Darvish to an 8-1 win over the visiting Braves.

Gallo, who has settled in as the team’s primary left fielder, went 3 for 4, including a solo home run in the first inning, an RBI triple in the third (he later scored), and another home run in the eighth inning. The home runs measured 340 and 348 feet, respectively.

Darvish, who is still working back to full strength coming off of a rotator-cuff injury, pitched six very strong innings, allowing just one run on two hits, and striking out a season-high seven. He needed just 86 pitches to earn the win. Nick Martinez pitched the final three innings for his third save of the season, working out of a bases-loaded jam in the eighth by inducing two ground balls and a strikeout.

Rougned Odor and Jose Abreu also homered for the Rangers, who recorded their 50th win.

Team news:

Jonathan Lucroy (intercostal) went 1 for 3 with a double, a walk, and a strikeout as the DH in Sunday night’s Express game.

RHP Nick Martinez was optioned to Round Rock, and RHP Keone Kela was recalled to take his place.

League news:

Twins first baseman Joe Mauer, 35, has recorded his 2000th career hit! Mauer is currently hitting .242 on the season, with 6 home runs and 29 RBI. We will face Mauer and the Twins for a three-game series starting tomorrow night!

Players of the Week have been named! White Sox 2B Yolmer Sanchez (.591, 3 HR, 8 RBI) and Marlins CF Marcell Ozuna (.400, 4 HR, 12 RBI, 6 R) are this week’s winners!

Game Recap

In a high-scoring shootout, Texas used clutch hitting to take down the Twins, 11-9, on Monday night.

A fourth-inning outburst was crucial to the Ranger victory. Down 4-3 entering the inning, Nomar Mazara turned the game around with a two-run homer to right field, his 24th of the year, with two outs in the inning. Adrian Beltre followed with an RBI single three batters later, and Joey Gallo followed with a three-run homer of his own, his 23rd of the year.

Mazara also made a pair of incredible outfield assists, throwing out runners in the fifth and sixth innings — both trying to score from second on a base hit.

Texas first baseman Eric Hosmer (0 for 4) was the only starter for either team not to record a hit. “I’ve been pressing a little bit,” Hosmer admitted after the game. “I think it may be good for me to take a little break and try to get things back to where they were last year.” In 2017, Hosmer was an All-Star, Gold Glove winner at first base, and hit .300 with 24 home runs and 98 RBI, but the 28-year-old has had a disappointing 2018, hitting just .238 with 3 home runs and 21 RBI. He has hit just .143 since the start of July (3 for 21).

Team news:

The team’s final J-2 target, Dominican 16-year-old Luis Curiel, has signed with the team on a minor league contract! Curiel was believed to be one of the top-five prospects in this year’s international class, and shows potential to be a skilled contact hitter with gap power and a strong arm at third base.
