I've made nine success mode characters, every single one said NO to throwing away his glove, and only one made it so far to have Dad and Becky's Dad speak about the "diamond in the rough", but no farther.

It's too random for me.

Maybe you have to use the Challenge card.
I know it costs $70 but it puts Dad in a better mood, so maybe it's worth it. The only other thing I know is to make sure you study or practice when your Dad says he's going to visit you, either to give or take money.

Even if you use the challenge card there is no text saying Dad's in a better mood.

Oh, guess I'm a bit delusional. I'd assume $70 and a game of catch would make anyone happy. Guess not for Dad.

I finally got to the conclusion of dad's story line with a pitcher with my latest player (Nolan Ryan - posted his stats/password in the password exchange forum). It went like this, in the form of "event (card played)"

* throw away glove (NO card)
* dad stops you and Alvin in town and asks about home maintenance (YES card)
* dad gets job (practice, study, or rest - do not work or date)
* dad loses job (practice, study, or rest - do not work or date)
* dad bumps into Mr. Fox (random event, nothing for you to do)
* dad talks to Mr. Fox again, gets challenged to train you (random, nothing for you to do)
* dad shows up and asks if you want to work on your breaking ball (CHALLENGE card, at which time you'll get to name your pitch and pick your upgrade to it).
* dad shows up and continues training, get to upgrade your pitch again

I don't know if there's a way for you to get him if you play a Marvin card, but I do know that I've saved/reloaded with this character that I'm currently making so much that there is no way it can be completely random. If a Marvin card can work, there must be some other factor...

Using a Marvin card when asked to help for a job also works.

How do upgrade the custom pitch? Is it the same as everything else, or is there something special?

The upgrade is different, although if the pitch you choose to have dad train isn't at level 7 you'll be able to continue to use experience towards it on the boost abilities screen. The difference there is that it now is at the bottom of the list of breaking pitches with a name of "ORIG" (like original).

No, with dad's upgrades it is him asking you what you want the pitch to do and you get 4-5 choices like "sharper break," "bigger curve," and so on. You choose the one you want and after a cut scene it tells you your named pitch has improved. This happens during the event where you actually name the pitch, but also dad can come back for future events to further upgrade your pitch. I had him come back once afterwards, but I think I remember someone on the gamespot forum saying they had like 3-4 follow-up visits from dad.

So, let's say my guy has a level 7 screwball, when my dad comes to upgrade it, it will stay at level 7 and not reset back to 1. Good. I was worrying about that so I upgraded the pitch I wanted to change the last. No more worries there.

Is a follow up from my Dad also random?

A possible theory for this just popped into my head. Maybe if you want your dad's storyline to continue, you need to become captain of the team? Has anybody gotten their dad to train you when they weren't the captain? I'm only guessing here but I hate being captain so I avoid it normally but it might be the reason I can't get this to happen.

I wasn't captain and I got my dad to lose his job, but nothing happened after that.

I've only used the Challenge card when training a fielder and I got experience points and a 5 clutch ability. Pretty useful but no where near the gain you'd receive if you were a pitcher.

And as for a pitcher...during the dad story line each event is still random. Which means you can do everything right but if the random events dont come up you have to save/quit until they do. And once he comes to train you he can come back. Just reload it during a week with a random event and he can come back many many times. Along with the help from Dr. Good Job you can create very strong players.

I've made two pitchers, both got a custom pitch. Not much save/reloading. First time i offered training after 4-5 storylines with him, but the second took 7-8 storylines (i.e. losing job, getting job, etc.) before he trained me.

The 2nd time he came back 7 times, so I was able to upgrade 7 times, obviously. the upgrades are this:

1. Less slowdown
2. Sharper pitch
3. Better changeup
4. Better slowball
5. Better breaking ball

My question is are the upgrades cumulative? for instance My custom was a variation on my H-SLD. Obviously, I don't want option 3 or 4 (those may even make it worse).

So i selected 1 twice, 2 twice, and 5 thrice. But i have no idea if the upgrades are cumulative, or pick an upgrade once, that's it. Also will option 3,4 actually help a faster pitch, solely because they're upgrades?

I don't know if it's even possible to figure it out (don't see how), but if anyone knows, much appreciated.

And lastly, what do Points in this forum do? I've donated some to people for answering questions, but not sure what their purpose is...
