i think early team captaincy is much better if you are a pitcher. it's easier since you're a good pitcher already and you can suppress the other team's runs even if you're not directly pitching all the time. worth the ecxtra effort if you're a pitcher.

Regardless, of your ability i've found that the scout's fate-card question before the game directly affects the score coming into the 8th inning as captain.

Yes- tied or +/- 1 run
No/Marvin - anywhere from -3 to +2
Challenge - always down 2+ runs

Wow, thanks MaxDSterling.

I never noticed that. I always thought Challenge would be the best. What happens if you answer NO?

Also, what about answers to Willy?
I know that NO just makes him leave.
YES has him possess you - does this make the game easier to win?
MARVIN has him possess a teammate - does this make them better hitters?
CHALLENGE has him possess an opponent - does this make it any harder? When he possessed Zero Gibson of the Champ Rings (I only had Challenge cards), my team won.

using Willy is generally discouraged (don't get the 50$ bat from Bison) as it lowers the EXP gained drastically and Willy becomes a high prob random event every week.

I usually avoid him, but I'll consider his effects once we've established the bulk of the rest of the methods.

I did use Willy to see what would happen, and in the games I need to win he'd belt a few over the fence, so even though we lost to the Champion Rings and other high level teams I got enough of a scout rating to make it to the minors

The percentages of how often you enter the 8th +/- a certain number of runs maybe be effected by what card you play, but it definitely is not a hard and fast rule. I always play a challenge (if I have one) with the scout, because if you play well (even if you don't win the game) you get a higher boost to your eval. If I'm going for max experience, I reload as many times as it takes to win. I'll enter the 8th anywhere from -4 to +3 even using a challenge every time.

Kind of late to this thread, but from what I gather here the positives of being captain are:

1) being more in control of team issues (lineup, training upgrades)

2) increase in pts received from games

Does that about sum it up or is there something else?

You also get sole decision on changing practices, like Free Weights and stuff. Not a big deal I guess since those are widely random events too.

Not related to being captain or not, but related to how many xp points you get from games is the Rookie Charm. While it makes things easier, it reduces the xp you get from games.
