I've found it easy with the Cincy Reds since they have a decent hitting core (get rid of Griffey or trade him, he's a has-been) and just need some pitching. Small market team with alright talent, a few success mode characters will solidify and guarantee some World Series

Pirates are a good choice, too. Jason Bay has got decent power, and there are enough players at each position to do some crafty trading.

Don't skip through every game. Skipping through the games will prevent you from gaining the in-game points. You don't have to play every one though. First find out the average amount of points you receive each game you play. The amount of points you lose each day is equal to your salary divided by 162. Use this to calculate how many games you'll need to play in order to keep you net balance at least 0.

I keep reading people saying this, but it simply isn't true. Watch your point counter when you're simming a series games, if your payroll is lower than your points earned per game you'll see that your owner points are going up even while you're simming. Also, after you get to the start of a new month and your assistant gives you last month's financials, you have income (owner points) even if you simmed the entire month.

So you *do* gain the in-game points, it is just that they get simmed like all your other stats. With my current roster I'm making around 20,000 points a month from games while actually playing no more than 4-5 games, with points for awards coming on top of that.

Fine, lets be more general concerning the points.

Allowing the computer to do the work for you may get you the "draw a walk" bonus, but very little else without your personal intervention.

It all comes down to ensuring you build up enough points each game to compensate for the running salaries you pay out each month. The hottest and most expensive guys may be slumping, and are not pulling in the point totals they are worth...

You can equate this to fantasy sports... A guy may be a superstar, but he may not be able to post the "fantasy numbers" that make him a hot fantasy player. This takes the same effect. Being a "Star" may get you those clutch moments, but they don't translate into the points you think they should.

oh, really? i'm sorry.

But getting a payroll that low must mean you're using an expansion team, right?

No worries. Actually I've got two seasons going, neither an expansion team. The first, which I'm in year 8 on, is a St. Louis Cardinals team. Although at this point the only player left from the Cardinals is Pujols, who I'm paying 20,000 a year to of my current 80,000 payroll. When I started with them, I whittled the payroll down from like 112,000 to around 50,000 the first year, and through trading and adding success mode players I've kept my salary mostly in the 65,000 - 75,000 range each year.

My second team, which is in season 2, is an "arrange team in season mode" team (Omaha JediKnights). I built them entirely from success mode players, and in year 1 my payroll was 38,000 and I went 148-14 -lol- I raised the game level up to All-Star and gave the CPU lock-on 5 (none for me), which has helped some in season 2. My payroll is 64,000 at this point, so I'm still making money hand over fist.

Yeah but some of the success mode players can cost over 10k points easily they're first year if you exploit the hell out of success mode. I made a SS that has everything you could want for a lead off guy with power to boot. His first year cost is 11,500 points a year, lol.

Also, I think the expansion team mode is a pretty decent challenge, although I haven't tried yet. My goal is to make a core 6 players and try to build a team through draft and trades and sim out a world series champion without getting fired.

Registering success mode players keeps their cost down. 1st year payroll for me with all success mode guys is 36000 compared to 180000. After 1st year i have 350000 points.

Do the first year salaries for registered players increase the next year or do they last 6 years?

I don't really want to play with an arranged team of success players though.

I was more in line with trying out an expansion team with 6 players, and I've unlocked the first two point upgrades in season mode already.

So 11,500 for a star player isn't that bad I take it?

I wish they did, but they increase and are supposed to represent the arbitration process. Their salaries do get much higher. My second year payroll is around 80,000.

I am going to gut the KC Royals and fill in gaps with Success Mode characters. Playing in Kaufman will be a lot like playing in the suburban stadium with the Tulips.
