Riptide ready to open season, Mariners will be first opponent

San Jose- The Riptide have come home. After what coach Jimmy Dugan dubbed a "learning experience" of a training camp, the squad will workout as a full team for the first time today at Cisco field before opening a four game in division series with the Seattle Mariners.
"I'm ready to go," said starting left fielder Chad Williams, whom is one of three teenagers on the opening day roster. "It's exciting to be here and be playing at this level. Just over a year ago I graduated high school and now I'm here; It's pretty awesome."
" I'm just glad I don't have a chaperone following me everywhere," said catcher Dotti Hinson, referring to how the AAGPBL kept track of their players. "That makes two of us!" Quipped closer Rick Vaughn from two lockers away.
Hinson was also asked about the pitching staff, which, to say the least, had a rough spring. "We are a young team and we are going to figure it out. These guys work hard everyday and I do everything I can to get on the same page with them and help them through the games."
"Dottie has been a big help," said starter Shane Wells. "She has played on a professional level before and it shows. She is always ready with scouting reports, advanced reports, and knows exactly what she's doing when she gets back behind the plate."
The man at the top of the lineup was also ready to go, "Let's do this," said an enthusiastic Willie Hays as he clapped his hands together. Hays had a decent spring. While he hit just .245, Hays did steal 8 bases. "That's what we do," said Hays, "get on base and cause issues for opposing pitchers."
When asked what we can expect from this team this year, manager Jimmy Dugan said, "We are going to play had, hustle and play the right way. And, if we don't, these guys will be hearing a lot of my voice at very high volumes."

Seattle Mariners VS. San Jose Riptide: 4/2/2007

Tide hold on in inaugural game to squeek out a close win

San Jose- On the inaugural game in franchise history, the San Jose eeked out a 7-6 win against the Seattle Mariners tonight at Cisco park.
"It was definitly an rollorcoster ride, a lot of back and forth," said right fielder AJ Wright who had a base hit and a stolen base in the game. "We would hit them and they hit right back."
The Riptide and starting pitcher Ryan Dunne got off to a good start in the first. After allowing a leadoff base hit to Ichiro, Dunne struck out the next three batters in a row to end the inning.
The Tide would draw first blood in the second inning. After a leadoff base hit from Benny Rodriguez and a wild pitch by Batista and a ground out by Hinson, Rodriguez scored on base hit by DH Zach Goodwin.
Dunne would run into some trouble in the third, allowing a 2 run triple off the bat of Jose Bautista and a weak flare off the bat of Jose Guillen that scored Vidro from third.
The Tide would retake the lead in the bottom of the inning, getting a base hit and a stolen base by Hays to open the inning followed by an RBI double by Mario Cirelli and a RBI base hit by Benny Rodriguez. Hays would join the RBI party with an RBI single in the fourth.
The Mariners and Riptide would exchange home runs in the sixth, the Mariners getting a solo blast off the bat of Kenji Johjima, and Mario Cirelli hit a three run home run in the bottom of the inning - which was the first in franchise history.
Dunne would exit the game after the seventh, his final line being 7IP, 4ER, 7H, 7K.
"I don't think Ryan pitched that bad," said manager Jimmy Dugan "He really only gave up two hard hit balls; the triple by Bautista and the homerun by Johjima. Other than that, everything else was not hit hard at all."
"I felt like I pitched OK," said Dunne "Obviously I don't like giving up the four runs and feel like I can pitch better."
"We were working off his fastball most of the night, but eventually Seattle began to catch up to it and we had to start throwing more breaking stuff to keep them off it, "said catcher Dottie Hinson, who also got the first hit by a female in major league history in the seventh and got a nice hand from the crowd. "Hopefully that is just the first of many."
Seattle tried to battle back in the ninth against closer Rick Vaughn, getting an E-5 from Cirelli and an RBI single from Jose Vidro before Vaughn got Ben Brussard to fly out to right to end the game.

Box Score
WP: Dunne (1-0)
LP: M. Bautista (0-1)
SV: Vaughn (1)
Mariners: Vidro 3-5, 3B, 3RBI; Ichiro 3-5 2R

Oakland A's VS. Riptide 4/6/2007

Tide end losing streak by doubling up A's

San Jose- The Riptide ended their three game losing streak last night by beating the Oakland Athletics 6-3 behind a good pitching performance by John Kessel. Kessel went six strong innings giving up just one earned run and striking out three. The Tide had struggled over the last few games but got some big hits when they needed them to score some runs to support Kessell.
"This was a good game for us offensively being able to get some hits and score some runs," said Willie Hayes who had 2 hits and a stolen base in the game.
"John pitched a great game," said shortstop Benny Rodriguez "He was able to keep his pitches down and get a lot of groundballs."
The A's were able to take a 1-0 lead in the first following a throwing error by Mario Cirelli. The Riptide would take the lead in the fourth; following back to back singles by Dottie Hinson and Lou Newman, Zach Goodwin would drive them both in with an 2RBI double and would score later in the inning on a SAC fly by Joe Martino. The Tide would tack on another run in the fifth on an RBI single by Lou Newman.
Then the fireworks started. In the sixth inning, Dan Johnson hit a slow bouncing ball through the right side that somehow got past both Lou Newman and Joe Martino. Bobby Crosby, who was on first, took off and headed for third and just barely beat a terrific throw from right fielder AJ Wright. Tide manager Jimmy Dugan didn't see things that way. After Crosby was called safe, Dugan immediately exited the dugout and started arguing with third base umpire Joe West. West let Dugan have his say, but threw him out after Dugan pointed at the front of the base where he believed Cirelli made the tag. Dugan finally left the field when both Jake Taylor and Roy Hobbs came out and just about dragged him back to the dugout.
The Tide would tack on two more runs on RBI singles by Mario Cirelli in the sixth and the eighth.
"Mario is off to a fantastic start," said hitting coach Roy Hobbs. "He is getting hits, and driving in big runs."
The A's got a run back in the 9th before Vaughn closed out the game by getting Jason Kendall to ground out.

Box Score
OAK:3
SJR:6
-----------------------------
WP: Kessel (1-0)
LP: DiNardo (0-1)
A's: Kendall 2-5, R; Scutaro1-1, RBI
Riptide: Kessel 6 IP, 7H, 1ER, 3K; Cirelli 2-5, 2RBI
