Riptide @ Mariners 4/9

DeNunez hurls a gem as Riptide sink Mariners

Seattle- Kenny DeNunez pitched a masterful game last night against the Seattle Mariners going 8 innings not giving up a run and striking out nine.
"I felt good tonight," said DeNunez. "Seattle has a good lineup and I was happy to keep them off balance and pitch a good game."
"He spotted his fastball well and mixed in his breaking stuff effectively and pitched a great game," added manager Jimmy Dugan.

The Riptide got all the runs they would need from just two people.
Benny Rodriguez had an RBI single in the first and an RBI in the third inning by Dottie Hinson.
The Tide would get their third run in the fifth when an error by Yunieski Betencourt allowed Rodriguez to score from second.
Seattle did threaten in the eighth by loading the bases with just one out, but DeNunez bared down and didn't allow a run by striking out Adrian Beltre and getting Jose Vidro to fly out to left.
The only blemish on the evening was homerun in the ninth by Ben Broussard against Rick Vaughn, who is off to a rough start.
"Ricky will be fine," said pitching coach Chet Steadman. "He is just off to a rough start, eventually he will settle down."

Riptide @ A's 4/17/2012

Cirelli, Hays lead charge as Riptide ace A's

Oakland- The Riptide used a big first inning to jump out to a big lead and tacked on four more late as the Riptide ended a brief two game losing streak.
"We were able to see the ball well and do some damage early," said left fielder Chad Williams "It's nice when you can get right out of the gate and have such a big lead.
The red hot Mario Cirelli started the scoring party with an RBI double and was followed an RBI singles by Zach Goodwin, a ground rule 2 RBI double by Lou Newman and a two out two RBI single by AJ Wright.
"Guys came out ready to hit and we didn't miss much." said Cirelli, who stayed hot in this game hitting a solo homerun in the fourth.
"He is just on fire right now," said second baseman Joe Martino. "You can't really throw this guy much without him getting a hit."
Dotti Hinson, who is off to a slow start, was dropped in the lineup and came up with two hits of her own. "That's what happens when you hit .215." said Hinson. "I'm only upset with myself."
The A's would try and fight back getting two homeruns from Nick Swisher and another from Erich Chavez, but would fall short as the Tide added two more runs in the eighth and one more in the ninth to seal the win

Angels VS. Riptide - 4/20/2012

Riptide comeback comes up short, lose slugfest
San Jose- The Riptide lost a wild high scoring game tonight as the first place Angels increased their division lead by beating San Jose 9 to 8; a game in which they once lead 4 -0.
"We can't build those types of leads and give them away like that," said Willie Hays. "This is a game we had to win.
The Riptide built their big lead with and RBI single by Chad Williams in the first, and RBI double by Joe Martino in the second. The Tide would Also get a homerun from Benny Rodriguez and an RBI single by Lou Newman in the third.
"We felt good about ourselves after we got those runs and felt like we had a good chance to win the game," said shortstop Benny Rodriguez.
But the Angels began to fight back, getting an RBI double from Mike Nappoli in the fourth and an 2RBI double and an RBI double from Juan Rivera in the fifth to pull even.
The Angels would take the lead in the seventh on back to back RBI singles from Murphy and Hillinbrand.
In the bottom of the inning, Tide manager Jimmy Dugan was tossed out of the game, his second ejection of the year, for arguing balls and strikes with the home plate umpire.
"I wasn't happy with the umpiring from the beginning of the game," said Dugan. "I'm actually surprised I wasn't thrown out of the game much early since I opened my mouth pretty much from inning one."
Dugan's ejection did spark a small rally. With two outs, Dotti Hinson doubled and Lou Newman drove her in with and RBI single. Zach Goodwin and Joe Martino also followed with singles and Hayes drove in two with a base hit to tie the game at 6.
The Angels would retake the lead when Gary Matthew Jr hit a no-doubt, three run home run to put the Angels up three.
The Tides comeback bid would come up short. After scoring two off closer Franky Rodriguez, Zach Goodwin was thrown out trying to score.

My inital plan was to create a 25 man roster and Smalls was going to be on it. But I decided I didn't want to make a full roster; to time consuming. So when I decided to just crate just a few good players, there was no way he was going to make the cut, there are just to many good players ahead of him.

Riptide @ Angels - 4/24

Riptide overcome late deficit to sink Angels despite two HR's from Matthews Jr.

Anaheim- In a game in which appeared to get out of hand for the Tide in the eighth inning; a game which no one would have blamed them for folding up the tents and just going home, the Riptide fought back against the Anaheim Angels and pulled out an improbable, come-from-behind ninth inning comeback win.
"We never gave up. Not even after we fell behind after the eighth, and against a good team and an excellent closer." said catcher Dotti Hison, who had 2 RBI's in the game. "This game gives us confidence going forward that no game is out of reach."
The game looked as it may end up a low scoring affair, as both starting pitchers pitched 6+ innings and only gave up a run apiece. But after taking out starter Bill Berg after 6.1 innings of well pitched ball and the game tied at one, the Tide bullpen, as they have done all year, struggled to hold the Angels down.
Gramhe Hill entered the game for Berg and promptly served up a solo homerun to Gary Matthews Jr, who also had an RBI single, and then surrendered an RBI double to Vladimir Guerrero to give the Angels a 3-1 edge.
But the Riptide fought back in the top of the eighth. Benny Rodriguez doubled in Mario Cirelli and after Zach Goodwin singled, Dotti Hinson drove in Rodriguez with an infield single to tie the game at three.
The Tide would give it all right back the next inning as reliever Ower Ruan gave up an RBI single to Chone Figgans and, two batters later, Gary Matthews Jr did it again, hitting what looked like a crushing 3-run homerun to left center that gave the Angels a 7-3 lead.
"I was trying to get it down and in and didn't quite get it in enough." said Rune after the game.
"This guy is absolutely killing us. I think he has like nine homeruns this year and about seven are off of us; we may never pitch to him again." said manager Jimmy Dugan then finished by saying, "Our bullpen has not been good, we need to figure out how to get these guys straightened out."
But the Tide were not done, as they mounted their comeback against one of the best closers in the league in Frakie Rodriguez. After getting three straight base hits to load the bases Mario Cirelli grounded out, but Joe Martino scored from third and Rodriguez hit a sac fly to center to score Willie Hays from third. The suddenly red hot Dotti Hinson followed with a booming RBI double to right center to pull the tide within one. Zach Goodwin was then hit by a pitch to reload the bases and AJ Wright delivered the final blow with a two RBI single to right to give the Tide a one run lead.
Rick Vaughn came on and pitched a perfect ninth to close out the game and preserve the one run win.

Riptide @ Royals 4/28/2007

Riptide wash away Royals in all around win

Kansas City- The San Jose Riptide ended a three game skid today by handily beating the Kansas City Royals eight to three. The Tide got a good pinching performance by Kenny DeNunez, who went 8 2/3 for the win.
"I was able to spot my fastball well today and mix in breaking balls; get strikeouts when I needed and was able to keep the ball down." said DeNunez after the game.
"He pitched a good game. The only reason he didn't get the complete game is because he just ran out of gas." Said Manager Jimmy Dugan.
The Riptide got most of their runs in the games first three innings. Already up 1-0 in the top of the second, Dottie Hinson was hit by a pitch, and was followed by a Lou Newman base hit. AJ Wright then doubled plating Hinson and Joe Martino followed with a 2RBI single.
After KC got on the board in the bottom of the second, the Riptide added three more runs on a Dottie Hinson RBI double, that just missed being a homerun. Lou Newman scored when Royals starter Oliver Perez uncorked a wild pitch and AJ Wright followed two batters later with an RBI single.
The Royals and Tide then went back and forth trading solo homeruns; John buck hit a monster, 425 foot homerun in the fifth and Benny Rodriguez answered back in the sixth with a homerun to left center. Mike Sweeney ended the power show in the eighth with his own homerun.
Angel Berroa and John buck had back to back two out singles in the ninth. And with Kenny Denunez tiring, Dugan was forced to bring in Rick Vaughn to close out the game.
"I don't like using Rick in non-save situations, but the guys in the pen are all taxed," said Dugan "We need to get those guys rested up."
