I have a 6 man rotation yet they make my relievers start several games. Most recently my knuckleballing ace reliever Maholm (not ace by his stats, but he can do pretty good) and he has poker face so I didn't know I overworked him until every other pitch was a fastball down the middle. I don't know if this has to do with it but he seemed to start worse than his relieving is it because of his unlucky ability? When he starts he does worse.

If you are playing your own games, then nothing apart from organization.

If you are simming, it will make a difference.

I usually find I have to go to a 6 man rotation for most of the season. Unless all of your starters have "A" stamina, you will probalby have to. If your players have less than "B" stamina, count on having long relievers. I usually keep only 2-3 players on the bench, and fill up my roster with pitchers. That way, I have a couple long relievers plus a swing man. They get used every so often, depending on how beat up a starter gets.

Most of the time, your set up man and closer will only come in when needed, unless your relief staff is completely shredded.

for me, most of the time my closer will come on even during an 11 run lead.

like Kupo! said, long relievers are life savers when your starters get shredded early.

In some parts of the season you may end up with a reliever starting (I'm guessing this is the swing man who starts every once in a while; you can change who is the swing man in the roles menu), but don't take that if you think someone else should be starting. Check your lineups and don't be afraid to switch pitchers if one of your starters are ready to go.
