Can players you pick from the draft become great, because every time i draft players they are terrible and don't seem to get better.

If you "practice them" they'll become good. There usually are some decent players in the draft including pitchers with high-80 to 90 mph fastballs. Like in real baseball, practice for a few years and they could become all-stars.

most likely, your team is picking last, if you won the world series or did well in the previous year. In my first year as the Indians, I picked 12th and was able to pick up a 5-star potential guy with decent starting stats.

but yeah, all players can end up being decent if you practice them enough.

What's the potential for? Does it really have any benefits?
I don't think it impacts the beginning stats.

If you make an expansion team, where in the draft do you pick?

potential is just a math equ to a 1-5 star system based on stats, both in quality and overall all-around-ness. It makes it easier to spot high-qual players without scanning and analyzing each one... but if you're going to be picky... you're going to be looking for a particular style of player anyways.

Yeah, but I saw a guy who had 5-star potential, but the stat graph was nearly empty. And vice-versa.

this is just a guess, but i'd assume players with higher potential gain stats quicker in practice. like, i've noticed a lot of the aged players in the game (randy johnson, roger clemens, etc.) gain stats very slowly, if at all, so their potential is probably 1 or 0, while a drafted character with 5-star potential will gain stats faster.

I wish expansion teams didn't suck at the beginning. Thank god for the dream draft.

I got some nice abilities from people in the draft. I got a guy with Dr. K and Intimidator!

The stats for the guys changes considerably. Just reload if there isn't a guy with great stats.

The expansion teams seem to suck, but almost all the expansion players become stars if you develop them as every single player on your team is like a draft player.
Be careful that your roster isn't full for the draft. You won't be able to exit the screen to release players and they won't let you go over so you are forced to forfeit your picks.

I won the world series in my second year with an expansion team. (No Dream Draft) Simulating every game. No extra points at the start either. I won only .135% of the games in the first year, but in year 2 I just barely won the Wild Card spot and then went on the win the world series. Every year after that is a cake walk to the world series.

Just train contact and top speed the first year. By the end of the year, top speed will be at least somewhat respectable and your contact will be A for almost every player. (Although you may need the Spring Training to finish it up.) In year 2, continue training top speed but depending on how many points you have try to put some money into offspeed pitching. Try to make it so that all the offspeed pitches of your various pitchers are at least a 3, preferably 4. Top speed is more important though.

Winning the World Series in year 2 through pure simulation is pretty hard. It's more qualifying for the playoffs that's the hard part as your team will only be mediocre (although drastically better than last year) for the first half of the season but will play much better during the second half.

3rd year+ - Stop training or things will get too easy.... try to keep your salary as low as possible. (25,000 should be easy to maintain) Don't resign any players who want more than 2,000 a year - you have tons of players in the minors with A contact and 95 mph top speeds who will play for 400. See how many points you can accumulate.
