Here's a new one that turned out well - hall of fame closer Bruce Sutter (1982 Cardinals). The B stamina might look funny for a closer, but Sutter pitched a lot of his career during the time closers routinely pitched 3 innings, and he did that a few times a week. So I wanted him to stay pretty strong throughout the season.

I love the guy - but Gossage is better - and I love the names you get for custom pitches, my names would be obvious ones like fireball or tornado, but nothing like yours.

My suggestion for the next one - Sizzle.

I wouldn't say Gossage was better, but equal :) I had to do Sutter first because I grew up a Cardinals fan, but I've got Gossage on my list to do. The only problem with the named pitch is that you can only do it for one of your breaking pitches. With Nolan Ryan I wanted to rename his fastball and call it "The Express," but it wasn't an option. So I ended up having to rename his curve instead. With Gossage, your suggestion of "Sizzle" would be cool if you could rename his fastball that, but it'd have to be his slider that got renamed.

I was happy to get both the named pitch and Intimidator for Sutter, that was pretty cool. I spent most of year 3 dating Becky, though it worked out because if I had spent all that time with the gambler's ring I would have had a hard time keeping his stats realistic.

i did make a tug mcgraw in success mode, but when i brought him into my season his screwball got inexplicably pounded. his era was over 5. he did have a pretty low control score to reflect the high number of walks he threw, but nothing that would account for such a shoddy performance. plus, he wanted almost 3000 owner points during contract renewal! i might have to try to make a better tug sometime. the tugger deserves better; may he rest in peace.

I'll take Gossage - I'm thinking:

B control, low B stamina - 104 top speed - level 3 changeup and curveball.

All I know from Wikipedia is that he regularly pitched from 98-102 (I picked 104 because you usually can only hit 3 mph below the top speed), and pitched primarily fastballs with only occasional change and curve. He threw with "pinpoint accuracy" but still only managed a 2:1 K:B ratio - not that great, but solid. He was a "workhorse closer."

Abilities:
Fastball Life
Dr. K
Intimidator (???)
W/RISP
Str Finisher
Battler
Poise

Anything else is icing.

Look reasonable?

Yep, looks like a good template. The only suggestion I'd have would be to add the green Power Pitcher ability, so that he throws mostly fastballs when you're simming.

I'll do a position player next since I've done a couple of pitchers in a row now (once I finish up DS' player this evening, assuming I don't get paged again by work). Thinking about maybe doing Wade Boggs, but I haven't decided for sure.

Yeah, I forgot about green abilities - I looked on Odawali's wiki page for the list of abilities. I have to finish my catcher first, though.

I got a few more abilities than originally planned, including gd low pitch, recovery, consistency, vs lefty, and gd delivery. The top speed will only 100, though, because 1) He could only throw 99 and 2) my gambling ring broke and I saved by accident. Shoot. - Still have the weeks after the championship game and will play the superstar game. I got Intimidator - I hope - ten hearts with Becky and married.

Edit:
Finished Gossage, camera out of batteries over weekend, and can't do until next weekend. forgot about gambling tickets, so now it's 101 top speed. Had extra points so I added a level 1 2SFB (makes his fastball even better), and a level 2 Slider. Intimidator was acquired. Pretty much better than I had hoped for. Birthdate, appearance, uniform number are all correct. Made him age 27 - his first year with Yankees. I'm going to make all HOF'ers age 27 (so they don't gain abilities to fast, but don't get worse either).

I might do Hoyt Wilhelm next - after a few other made up guys.
What team - Orioles (1958-62), Giants (1952-56), or the White Sox 1963-68)?
Probably:
Closer
Knuckleball - 7
95 top speed
High B stamina (170) - once a starter
High B control (140)

Abilities:
Breaking Ball P
W/RISP
VS LH
Poise
Spin - good breaking balls - I don't know about knucklers, though?
Recovery
Consistency
Good Low Pitch
Groundball P
Str Finisher
No Dr. K (the first pitcher I've made without it)
Battler
Gd Delivery
Should I go with Intimidator or Safe Pitch (Becky or Annie)?

Let's be racially diverse and add some Negro leaguers up here:
All age 19, because they had a great deal of untapped potential

Buck O'Neil (1B)- great contact and fielding, below average power and speed.
Josh Gibson (C)- great power, arm strength, fielding, contact, average speed
Cool Papa Bell (CF)- great speed, fielding, contact, average (or below) power, good arm strength
Satchel Paige - already mentioned in Request? topic thread
Rube Foster - great stamina, good control, great fastball, decent breaking pitches

I think he's been mentioned, but: Sadaharu Oh.

Make sure to check the "Post your characters" thread, as there is a different Cy Young, Mickey Mantle, and slightly inaccurate Lou Gehrig.

I made a spreadsheet of a few old players and college players showing all their data and ideal abilities (contact, power, stamina, etc.). I you want to see it just, e-mail me.

I finished Wade Boggs this evening, he turned out well other than I got stuck with firstball hitter :( Boggs was famous for his plate patience and rarely swinging at the first pitch, so that ability doesn't fit at all. Other than that he is pretty much what I envisioned - rally hitter, hot hitter, contact hitter, push hitter, spray hitter, clutch 5, vs lefty 5, refined, slap hitter, patient hitter, star, and maybe something else I'm forgetting. I'll post him tomorrow, it's getting late tonight :)

I'm starting Wilhelm now, should be much easier because gambling for breaking balls is easier than top speed where the % will fall down to below 10 after a while. I'll probably have some breaking points left over, so I'll add a knuckle-curve (it's similar to his famous knuckler). I'm hoping for an earlier gambling ring, again from room-cleaning. I'll opt for him on the Giants.

im pretty much done with wilhelm and i kind of screwed up.

the pitches and abilities are good - but I mixed up the numbers for control and stamina, so my control is a C and stamina an A - Im using heavyweight to bring it back down.
