Post subject:  Using Categories

Please remember to add your pages to their proper categories, otherwise there will be no way for anyone to get to them (links to this page= none )

at the bottom of the page just add the category to which it belongs using this format

[[Category:category]]

where category is the category the page is to be added to.

For example: [[Category:Success Mode]] adds pages to the Success Mode list of pages.

Edit: you can have multiple categories, just place the tags on their own line.

Thanks,

Glad you brought that up because I had a question about it. Where do we put the scheduled(?) fate card events? I didn't think we should put them on the random event page because obviously they're not random. Should we just scrap the random page and make one "Fate Card Events" page, and then distinguish between random and scheduled? Maybe there's already a spot for it and I just missed it...

As of now, there are two categories... Random Events and Key Events (note: both are PLURAL!) which handles all the 'set' events.

I haven't set up the Key Events page (it'll show as red) but it's there :D

To clarify, random event do not always involve fate cards, most do, but like Marvin's Music does not (and a few others that don't come to mind).

Also, key events (like 3rd year captainship) doesn't involve fate cards, but some do (Becky's lipstick- ewww).

We can put another tag on fate card events. Just add it: [[Category:Fate Card Event]]

Awww .... I forgot about those crazy no-fate-card events. But I think I got it... every event will either be in the key events or the random events and then if they use cards also the fate card events. Who's on 1st? Anyone?

Okay, I moved Random Event back to being plural... makes more sense. I'm going through to ensure the links are reset proper.

Remember, wiki links only auto-capitalize the first letter, so if you need to make your link grammatically correct, but still link use a pipe ( | ) to "rename" the link.

for example
This is a [[Random Events | random event]] that occurs in [[Success Mode | success mode]].

will look like:

This is a random event that occurs in success mode.

and the links will be correct. Do take care to DOUBLE CHECK the links by using Preview and checking that the links are BLUE or PURPLE (not red) if you know they exist already.

note: so if you write [[shop]], it will still translate into the "Shop" (capitalized) page, but two words like [[success mode]] will goto "Success mode" which will NOT be a page (case sensitive).

Thanks,

We should make custom players with names like that!

Edit: Sorry I just realized this thread is like......ancient!

I think we need a category for MLB Life (and possibly better page titles). There are pages that sort of jump in your face without explaining what mode they are taking about.

For example:
wiki/index.php?title=Important_Items_2008 :Important items in Success Mode? Season Mode? MLB Life?
wiki/index.php?title=Books_2008 :Probably an MLB Life item page, but no way to telling from the information available on the page.

I'd go around editing these myself, but I haven't really touched MLB Life, so I'll have to leave it to the wiki contributors who have.

edit: wth, I'll do it anyway.

I agree, the MLB Life guide, while vastley imrpoved, is still rather lacking in terms of items, detailed describtions, practices, ect.

Post subject:  Re: Using Categories

I don't think there will be enough guides for MLB Life and Season Mode for those to have their own category, so
I'd like to suggest a general category for guides, Maybe [[Category:General Guides]], for non-Success Mode guides.

Cownip's Arrange Team Guide wiki/index.php?title=Guide_to_Creating_a_Strong_and_Original_Arrange_Team
Max's Credit Exploit wiki/index.php?title=Credit_Exploit

could both go in there, as well as (any future) guides for hitting, fielding, pitching etc. What does everybody think?

Using Subcategories

Use SubCategories to fill the pages with information, don't add the information manually.

To add a sub category to a category, place the larger category tag on the sub category page so you have a hierarchy. Since there aren't that many game platforms being used, there is no need to create 3 levels of categories.

Category: Custom Teams

Subcategory: Custom Teams- Wii 2007
Subcategory: Custom Teams- PS2 2007
Subcategory: Custom Teams- Wii 2008
Subcategory: Custom Teams- PS2 2008

Do not place BOTH the Custom Teams and the Sub Category tags on the team page, just the sub category page. We don't want categories to 'double dip' pages.

Should we re-tag other pages that are tagged with a bunch of "parent" categories? I do see the point of only using the tag farthest down the category hierarchy, for example right now Category:Success Mode 2008 is a mess because it has pages about items, events, characters (pages that have their own sub category) on one page, making it difficult to find "general" pages about Success Mode 2008.

Post subject:  Re: Using Categories

For clarification, the hierarchical scheme is desired by the wikipedia staff, although it may not be strictly enforced.

Like Odawali said, it's an attempt to de-clutter one massive category in favor of a "general" parent category and "detailed" sub-categories.

For Example, we've wanted to divide the 2008 Success Mode Events into 2 categories of 2 sub categories each (Discussion here).

These could all be subcategories for the 2008 Success Mode category:
  • Characters
  • Events - I don't do more than 2 tiers as there aren't more than 3-4 sub categories in that tier.
    • Key Fate Events
    • Random Fate Events
    • Stand Alone Free Events
    • Side Story Free Events
  • Commands
  • Success Mode Statuses/Abilities (e.g. Toothache) - these can be drawn from the main abilities list.
  • Items
  • Guides

Post subject:  Re: Using Categories

The thing is, then it would conflict with the "Tag All 2008 Pages [[Category:MLB Power Pros 2008]]" rule (per PM "MLB Power Pros Wiki editing is resuming" Mon Aug 04, 2008 8:24 pm). When that rule came into play, I simply assumed every page should be tagged with any categories it belonged to, starting with 2007/2008 and all the way down the hierarchy.

Was that more of a temporary rule till we got things in order?
