As I waited on deck, I watched the opposing pitcher, Larry Stevens, pitch to my teammate/best friend Evan. I had been closely observing Stevens all game, and I was confident that I could handle him. After watching him strike out Evan, I calmly stepped into the box.

That's when everything changed...

October 15, 2013

I woke to the sound of Yoda yelling for me to fulfill my destiny. I checked my alarm clock: 4 A.M. Who would call me this early? I didn't worry about finding out. I quickly pushed ignore and went back to sleep.

I woke back up just in time to panic, get dressed and run by Hardee's before school. I had to sneak in through the back door of the classroom while Mr. Turner had his back turned.

"Where have you been? You're half an hour late!" "Got up late." "Again? You really need a better alarm clock." Jacob always gives me a hard time about sleeping in, and today was no exception. "Wasn't my fault," I replied. "Someone called me at, like, 4. It messed up my routine." "Who was it?" "I don't know, I was too tired to check."

Now that I thought about it, who was it that called me? My curiosity consumed me for the rest of class. As soon as I got out, I checked my phone. The number was unfamiliar, and my phone showed that the call was from someone in Hawaii.

Hawaii???

Maybe I should call back...

----------------------------------------------------------------------

What do you guys think? Hoping I can stick with this.

October 15, 2013 (Part 2)

After school, I decided to call back.

"Hello?"

"Hello, this is Joseph Wellington. Is this Mr. Gray?"

"Yeah..."

"Thank you for calling me back, Mr. Gray. I wanted to discuss a business matter with you."

...Is this guy a lawyer or something?

"Ok..."

"As you may have heard, the MLB is expanding to 32 teams. I am heading a group that is purchasing the team."

"Ok, and you're calling me because..."

"I want to offer you a job..."

An internship? That would be nice.

"As GM."

What?

"Um, sir, you do realize I'm only 20, right?"

"Yes, I do."

"Then why would you want to hire me?"

"Because I know that you have the knowledge to run a successful baseball team. You may only be 20, but from what I've heard you know a thing or two about baseball. I trust that you know enough to lead this team."

"But I don't have any experience."

"Neither do I!" At this Wellington let out a loud laugh. "Look, the point is that I want you to be GM. Do you want the job?"

"Yes! Yes! Definitely!"

"Perfect! I'll purchase your tickets and see you here tomorrow."

"Ok. Bye."

"Bye."

As I hung up the phone, I almost passed out from the shock. ME? GM?

I quickly texted Jacob and Evan to come over. I needed some advice.

October 15, 2013 (Part 3)

Half an hour later, my friends and I were at Dairy Queen, ordering.

"Let's see... I'll have an Oreo Blizzard, a chocolate ice cream cone, a large order of fries..." Evan has one heck of an appetite, huh?

After we got our food, we went and sat in our booth.

"So Kevin, why did you call us out here?" Jacob asked curiously.

"Well, I got a call from a guy named Joseph Wellington..."

At this, Evan choked on his Blizzard.

"...And he offered me a job as GM of a new MLB team."

And Evan passed out.

When he came to, he only had two things to say. "Did you take the job?" and "Is my Blizzard melted?"

"Yes, I took the job! And no it's not."

"Then gimme!"

He spent about a minute wolfing down the rest of his food, then turned to us.

"Now, what is it about this job?"

"I'm leaving for Hawaii tomorrow."

"Hawaii?" And down went Jacob.

When we revived him, he said one thing: "TAKE ME WITH YOU!!!"

"Me too!" Evan chimed in."We could be useful!"

I thought about this for a minute. "You know, you guys may be right. I'm gonna call Mr. Wellington back."

*RING...* *RING...* "Hello, this is Mr. Wellington's office. How may I help you?"

"Hello, I'd like to speak with Mr. Wellington, please."

"And who is this?"

"Kevin Gray."

"Ok, Mr. Gray, I'll put you through right away."

........

"Hello?"

"Hello, Mr. Wellington? This is Kevin. I had a question for you."

"Alright, then go ahead."

"Well, I have a couple of friends who go to school with me, and I was wondering if you could hire them as well."

"Absolutely..."

Great!

"Not."

:wtf!: Really?

"Um, sir?"

"Yes?"

"We're kind of a package deal..."

Mr. Wellington thought about it for a minute.

"Well," he finally replied,"I guess, since you're the GM, you have that right. I'll purchase two more tickets for your friends."

"Thank you, sir! You won't regret this!"

"I hope not..."

---------------------------------------------------

And thus I completed my first transaction as GM. Hopefully there are many more to come.

---------------------------------------------------

How am I doing so far?

EDIT: Accidentally posted Part 2 twice. Wish I could delete. Oops.

I woke up and got dressed, packed up my stuff, and told my mom goodbye. It was a little emotional, as I had never lived away from her yet. I gave her a hug and kiss, threw my stuff in my car, and started off for the airport. I picked up Evan, who looked exhausted, and Jacob, who was literally hopping up and down from the excitement of getting to go to Hawaii.

When we arrived at the airport, Jacob grabbed his stuff and literally ran into the airport. Evan had to go catch him, as I had a lot to carry as well as a bad knee. We proceeded to the first-class section and boarded the plane. (First-class, huh? I could get used to this...)

As we flew, I knew we were in for a rough ride. Evan had gotten a TON of food, and if he got airsick, there would be no barf bag big enough to contain it.

Somehow, we made it through without Evan puking. Mr. Wellington greeted us upon arrival, and we took his limo (Yeah, baby!) to the newly-purchased executive office of the Honolulu Wild. We were introduced to Ms. Lauleneke, who was to be my new assistant. As I looked around my beautiful new office (Beach view!), I asked a question: "So, who's on the team?"

Mr. Wellington started to sweat. "Well... um... we don't... exactly... have any players..."

WHAT???

"So you're telling me that I have to build the roster from scratch in less than four months?!?!?"

"...Yes."

:fear:

"How am I supposed to do that?!?!?"

"That's up to you. But we need a roster of at least 25 players before we can start Spring Training."

 "Ok then." I turned to Evan and Jacob. "Time for your first job, guys. Evan, I need you to scout the U.S., Canada, and Mexico. Jacob, I need you to scout Japan, China, and anywhere else you think is fit in that region. And please, don't get distracted by girls." Jacob, who had been staring at Ms. Lauleneke the whole time, turned and responded "What? Me? Distracted? I would never..." and at this he turned and started staring again. Let's hope he survives.

After giving ourselves a few days to get settled, I drove Jacob and Evan to the airport, where they boarded their planes, both excited (but for different reasons). Meanwhile, I had some work to do.

I headed for the University of Hawaii, where I had scheduled an open tryout for anyone wanting to come. I had heard big things about some players there, and wanted to check them out as well as anyone else who I could find.

When I arrived, I was greeted by the coach, who was EXTREMELY surprised that I was only 20. But he got past it and we got the tryouts started.

After several hours, I had only found one guy I wanted, but man, he was GOOD. Here are my ratings of him:

Name: Akoni Kailolu
Age: 19
Position: RF
Bats: R
Throws: R

Trajectory: 3
Contact: C(10)
Power: C(122)
Running Speed: C(10)
Arm Strength: A(14)
Fielding: B(12)
Error Resistance: A(14)
Clutch Hit 4
Gold Glover

Star
Aggressive STL
Aggressive RUN

Poise 4( :P )

I immediately called him after leaving the tryout, and agreed to meet with him shortly to discuss a contract.

I was feeling good about myself, so I went to Olive Garden (they have those in Hawaii, right? :P) and had a nice dinner before going to my new apartment. I checked my email and saw that Evan had arrived in California, and was already on his way to the site of the first scheduled tryout, which is in San Francisco.

UPDATE!!!!!

-----------------------------------------------------------------

October 22, 2013

I woke up as usual: with a shower, a shave, and a short drive to Hardee's for a biscuit. Man, I must be obsessed with their food or something.

Anyways, after that I drove over to the office, where Ms. Lauleneke greeted me. I walked over to my desk right as the phone started ringing. I answered, and it turned out to be Jacob. He said that he had just arrived in Tokyo, but I could tell by his voice that he was already distracted by Japanese chicks. He did have enough focus to answer all of my questions before I hung up. I hope he makes it back before spring training...

After my interesting chat with Jacob, I got on my computer and checked my email. At the top was an email from Hardee's with some coupons. I made sure to mark that one before moving on to the next one. This one was from Evan:

"Mr. Boss Sir... yeah, I'm never gonna call you that.

Anyways, Kevin, I ran the San Fran Tryout yesterday and found a couple of pretty good players. Their grades and info are below:

Name: Randy Perzinski
Age: 19
Position: C/3B
Bats: L
Throws: L (Weird, but still EXTREMELY good)

Trajectory: 3
Contact: C(10)
Power: C(130)
Running Speed: D(9)
Arm Strength:A(14)
Fielding: B(12)
Error Resistance: A(14)
Good Bunt(?)
Great Catcher

Aggressive RUN
Aggressive STL(?)

Poise 4 (What's up with all these fielders with Poise 4?)

Name: Derrick Noll
Age: 22
Position: SP
Bats: R
Throws: R

Top Speed: 93 mph
Control: C(147)
Stamina: B(115)
Slider Lvl. 3
Curveball Lvl. 3
Changeup Lvl. 2
W/RISP 4
Poise 4
Lucky
Battler

Aggressive RUN (Ok...)

Anyways, hope these guys can be useful. I have attached their contact info below. Heading home to Houston for the next tryout.

Evan Reynolds, Honolulu Wild scout."

Home... That reminded me: I hadn't called my mom since I got here. I called her as soon as I got done reading through my email.

I spent the rest of the day arranging meetings for Perzinski and Noll, as well as beginning to look for a manager and staff.

I walked in to the smell of pancakes and bacon. Gotta love Mom.

And then I saw who was sitting at the table.

"EVAN!!! WHY ARE YOU EATING MY FOOD?!?!?!?!?!"

"Uh, because it's good. Duh!"

"Did you save me any?!?!"

"..."

"EVAN!!!!!!!!!!!!"

"Relax, man. I'm joking! Here's yours."

I started eating ravenously while Evan explained when and where the tryout would be held. But his voice was drowned out by the amazing taste of bacon, so he had to tell me all over again afterwards. Looks like the next tryout will be held at the University of Houston, our alma mater. I wonder if it'll look the same to me...

October 25, 2013

I woke up at 6 to make sure that Evan didn't steal my breakfast again. While I waited for everyone else to get up, I checked my email and found one from Jacob:

"Got a story for ya. So I was walking through Tokyo, when I took a wrong turn into a back alley. So I just kept going, and eventually I ran into a creepy old man who asked me if I was a baseball player. I told him that I used to be but I wasn't anymore. He walked away mumbling about needing models. So I did the logical thing: I followed him.

He went into a dark building, where I saw a big machine. It kinda freaked me out, so I started to leave when I saw somebody that looked like someone I'd seen before. He was wearing a baseball uniform that said, "Ham Fighters." Ham Fighters? What kinda team name is that? What do they do, fight ham?

Anyways, I got bold and went up to him. I introduced myself and was telling him why I was in Japan when the old man appeared behind him. He told me that he was the player's agent and that the player didn't know English. However, the old guy told me to continue. When I was done, the old man took us out back, where a makeshift bullpen was set up, and had the player show me his skills. Needless to say, I gave him your number and told him that we would call and set up an appointment.

So if I were you, I'd get this guy. Oh, and here's my evaluation and his info:

Name: Yuu Darvish
Age: 19
Position: SP
Bats: R
Throws: R

Top Speed: 92 mph
Control: C(135)
Stamina: B(110)
Lvl 5 H-SLD
Lvl 3 SCB
Lvl 2 CHG
W/RISP 4
VS LH Batter 4
Poise 4
Gd Low Pitch
Battler
Consistency 4

I would call him soon. This guy's so old he may forget.

Jacob."

Well, that was an interesting story. Hmm...

After everyone got up, I found out the bad news: Mom wasn't making breakfast! So Evan and I headed for Hardee's before going over to the school for tryouts. Obviously, we would know quite a few people there, so I told him ahead of time that we couldn't be biased in our picks.

As we stepped out of my car, I immediately saw several players we knew, as well as a lot of fresh faces. I went to get set up, when I saw somebody that I knew. I ran back over to Evan.

"Dude, is that your brother?"

"Yep."

"But I thought Brock..."

"Wasn't very good? He wasn't until just recently. He FINALLY hit puberty and turned into a solid player."

Guess we'll see what he's got...

FAST-FORWARD TO END OF TRYOUT!!! (Mario theme plays in background.)

As tryouts ended, I addressed everyone.

"As you all know, we cannot sign any of you on the spot, so those of you that made will receive a call in the next few days."

While people were filing out, Evan and I looked over our evaluations and chose the players that we would sign:

Name: Chuck Norris

Position: 1B
Bats: R
Throws: R

Trajectory: 3

Arm Strength: D(8)
Fielding: D(9)
Error Resistance: B(12)

I left Mom's house early so I could get Hardee's before my flight. I boarded my flight at 7, got situated in my first-class seat ( 8) ) and pulled out my laptop. I started by setting my fantasy football lineup (1st place!!!), then I checked my email. The first one was from Evan:

"Hey Kevin,

I forgot to tell you that the next tryout is on October 28th in Kansas City. I'll notify you of the results.

Evan Reynolds, Honolulu Wild scout."

The second was from Jacob:

"Hey Kevin, I have another story for you.

So I was driving into Hiroshima when I passed a college called Tokisei Academy ( :D ). Their baseball team was practicing, so I pulled over to watch. They had an outfielder there with AMAZING speed, and he was pretty good at everything else. After practice I tracked him down and got his info, and he seemed very interested in the MLB, so I told him we'd call him. Here's his stats and info:

Name: Zakinori Suzuki
Age: 19
Position: CF/RF
Bats: S
Throws: R

Trajectory: 2
Contact: C(10)
Power: D(100)
Running Speed: A(14)
Arm Strength: C(10)
Fielding: B(12)
Error Resistance: A(14)
Clutch Hit 4
Stealing 4
Gold Glover

Star
Aggressive STL
Aggressive RUN

Poise 4 (AGAIN???)

Oh, and he said he was related to some guy named Ichiro. Probably a fisherman or something.

Jacob."

 Ichiro?!?!?!? What?!?!?!? I'm definitely calling this guy.

I woke up to the sound of my phone ringing. I checked my alarm clock to find it blinking. Power must have gone out during the night, I thought.

I answered the phone to the sound of Evan eating. "Evan?" I moaned. "What time is it?"

"Five PM," he replied. "Three in Hawaii."

 How did I not wake up earlier? "What do you need?"

"I just wanted to let you know how the tryout went."

"Fire away."

"Alright, so I may have found you a pitcher. Kid's name is Kenny DeNunez. He's a 19-year-old from KC. He hits 96 on the gun and has a couple good pitches. I'll email you his info later."

After he hung up, I called the office and told them that I wouldn't be coming in, then ordered a pizza and turned on Psych. A few hours later, I checked my email and found one from Evan:

"Hey Kevin, here's my evaluation and info on Kenny:

Sweet. Looks like a good addition.

I kept scrolling past all the Hardee's coupons, fantasy football alerts and GameStop notifications and found an email that Jacob had sent me that morning:

"Hey, I just landed in Beijing. Gonna get scouting soon, but first I must eat!

Jacob"

Some things never change.

I'M BACK!!!!!
