Team Preview: Flyers
Head Coach: Donald Hart (2nd season, 1-7)
Departures: F J.J. Jennings (8 starts, 5.6 PPG, 4.6 RPG) - graduation Arrivals: SG Bradley George (**, Defense), walk-on PG Tim Young, walk-on PF Ashton Free
The Flyers were a complete disappointment last season, only winning one game: their final game of the season, which happened to be the Senior Night for starting forward J.J. Jennings, their only departure from last year’s team. Head coach Donald Hart will need to get the players all on the same page this season if he wants to keep his job; sophomore guards Ryan Jacobs and Calvin Miller will play big roles in determining whether or not this season is a good one for the team. The Flyers are unique in that they did not join the S.A.G.S. League until Season 2, but they are viewed as being a very strong academic institution that may be a perennial cellar-dweller unless this group of sophomores steps up and turns them into a legitimate contender.
Bold - Projected Starter, Italic - Newcomer
C Luis Pena (SO, 6’10”, 255) — Pena was a walk-on last year and still averaged 2.4 points and 2.9 rebounds per game, earning the Top Walk-On award. This season, the native Colombian will be asked to be a physical presence in the paint. A strong rebounder, Pena will have less opportunities to score as the players around him grow into their roles, but he will still have a role as a rebounder and a hard fouler.
PF Jon Sampson (SO, 6’10”, 240) — After making six starts, averaging 8.9 PPG, and shooting 29 percent from three last year, Sampson will be looked to as a stretch-four or even a stretch-five this season. He is likely to receive the most minutes behind Pena at the 5 in addition to starting at the 4 this year.
G/F Antwan Long (SO, 6’4”, 195) — Long is a very stout defender who posted modest averages of 3.5 points, 2.4 rebounds and 1.1 assists per game last season. His impact on the game is often not quantifiable, as his defense is his calling card, but he is a threat to score if left open.
SG Ryan Jacobs (SO, 6’3”, 185) — Jacobs was the star last season, scoring 15.3 PPG and shooting 44% from deep, but he will be part of a more balanced attack this season. Jacobs is a playmaker who consistently finds new and creative ways to score, and also plays solid defense.
PG Calvin Miller (SO, 6’1”, 185) — Rounding out the Flyers’ all-sophomore starting five is point guard Calvin Miller. He averaged 15.4 points per game while shooting 47 percent on three-pointers, and he may take on an increased scoring load after an offseason of hard work and training. Miller is an explosive athlete who can score at the rim, but he likes to shoot threes as well.
PG Mickey Hart (SR, 6’, 170) — The oldest son of coach Donald Hart is a self-designated three-point specialist. After a rough sophomore year with the Slammers, he transferred to play for his dad, and averaged 8.5 points and 1.4 assists per game while shooting 40% from deep. He will be the first man off the bench for the Flyers this season.
SG Aaron Hart (JR, 6’3”, 185) — Mickey’s younger brother is a high-jumper for the track team and a good athlete, but he often struggles to translate his athleticism to the basketball court. He is often too eager to shoot the three instead of taking it to the hole, but upped his scoring average from 3.7 to 5.1 points per contest last season, and will try to continue that trajectory this season.
SG Bradley George (FR, 6’3”, 190) — George is the team’s highest-ranked recruit coming in…and he is only given a two-star (out of five) rating by most scouting services. However, the coach of his high school’s biggest rival says that he thinks the young, athletic wing could become great…under the right coaching staff. It is yet to be seen whether George will be a fit in coach Hart’s system.
F Bob Davis (JR, 6’6”, 200) — Davis, a former walk-on, will probably not play too much of a role this season despite receiving a scholarship, although coach Donald Hart is a firm advocate of getting every one of his players into games as often as possible. He turned down a scholarship from the All-Stars after his freshman year to come play for the Flyers, but it remains uncertain whether he will have any impact during his time here.
F Brad Jones (SO, 6’7”, 220) — Jones is a walk-on forward who prefers to spend his time on the court shooting from deep, limiting his impact on the game barring a made shot. He made just 2 of 10 from three last season.
PG Tim Young (FR, 5’10”, 170) — Young is a talented, but inconsistent point guard who can pass, rebound and score…sometimes. A walk-on, Young was rated a two-star prospect by a couple of services, but turned down offers from the All-Stars and Gunners to come to the Flyers. He is rumored to already be considering a transfer after the season.
PF Ashton Free (FR, 6’9”, 225) — Free is a decent defender, but is not willing enough to get physical on either end to be much of anything at this stage in his career. He has four years to figure it out, however.
